This intermediate- to advanced-level reader contains fifteen unabridged short stories about women protagonists. Cultural, geographical, and historical information heightens students' awareness of each of the countries represented. Updated author profiles written in English help students place the stories within a literary and cultural context.
Loved this book! I enjoyed discovering all of the authors and learning about their country of origin. All of the stories are very entertaining and eye-opening. I recommend this book to people interested in learning about French/francophone culture.
I've long since found that literature is one of the best ways to improve your foreign language skills and this still holds true having read this book. The great thing about learning French is that there is an amazingly vast œuvre of great literature to pick from, and this collection of short stories does not disappoint. If you're not familiar with the francophone world, then you'll be surprised to find how many French-speaking countries are represented here. There are stories from Congolese, Senegalese, Algerian, Vietnamese, and Haitian authors to go along with the expected Canadian and French ones. I could never say that French lit is better than English lit, or visa-versa, but I will say that genuine (non-translated) French lit is a far more global experience than that of English works. The book here does a great job of giving us a sampling of great lit all around the world and I would highly recommend it.
This anthology was a wonderful introduction to not only French short stories and authors, but francophone short stories and authors as well--it was so refreshing to read stories written in Quebec, Haiti, and other French-speaking countries. Each of the stories represents an important aspect within the literary world, such as the themes of identity, isolation, and absurdism.
