I love the level of intensity that this volume has started to add into the story. It's really kicking my enjoyment of the series into high gear, and I really hope that it keeps the seriousness it's added with this volume as it continues to go on. It better, given the cliffhanger that this volume ends on.

Suzune is a b*tch and her children are brats, but they added some much needed tension and drama in the story. The drama prior drama wasn't doing it for me. Here at least Usagi's character gets to grow when she's not drooling over Hanzo.

Poor Mamazou, he just doesn't catch a break and this poor thing deserves it.

I really liked this volume! It was interesting to meet Sasuke, Hanzo's older sister. I didn't like her at first, but she ended up approving of Usagi and helping her out a bit. We learned about Mamezo's past here, and a bit of Hanzo's. As usual, it ended on a cliffhanger (and as usual I don't mind because I have the next one, lol). 5 stars! Quite enjoyable.

Hanzo's sister is a bit crazy I think. Scary and bossy! I mean, she is the one who disappeared for years without hardly a word and then thinks she can come back with 5 kids acting like this?! Woman is nuts!!! Hanzo should have seen how much Usa was hurt by them both. I felt so bad for her and Mamezo in this volume! Bit heartbreaking!

Ah!! I can't wait to read the next one!! Such a horrible, but exciting cliffhanger! That's not meant in a bad way, but, oh! Excellent, though.

I kept reading this series because people said it gets a lot better but I'm still not seeing it. If anything this was the worst volume so far. It's still so hard to ignore the age gap in this series, especially when Usagi doesn't even act like a 15 year old, more like a completely incompetent 10 year old. I get that she's supposed to be growing and her being incompetent is also a sort of repeating joke, but it really just makes me dislike her and find the romance creepy.

There is some new messed up shit in this volume that really rubs me the wrong way. We get a new repeating plot line where the characters talk about how Usagi is too fat and eats too much and needs to go on a diet. Hanzo, her supposed fiancé now, repeatedly reinforces that she's too fat, which in any scenario is such disgustingly toxic behavior I cannot stand it. Keep in mind that based on the Usagi's actual looks in the manga, she is tiny and petite and can't weigh more than 100lbs. The whole plot is a disgusting message in a manga aimed towards young women and it's not just a one off joke either, it comes up constantly.

We also have the new character of Hanzo's sister in this volume, who adds so many layers of toxicity to the messaging of this manga. She disapproves of Usagi and is repeatedly cruel to her. She steals and destroys Usagi's prized possessions, she's mean to Mamezo, and oh yeah her children nearly MURDER Mamezo. Through all this Hanzo refuses to back up or defend Usagi from the constant verbal abuse in any way. Absolutely disgusting behavior from someone who supposedly wants to be Usagi's partner.

Not to mention, the main point of Hanzo's sister being there is to "train" Usagi to be a housewife... except she's a ninja/herbalist. Who did these chores before? She's supposed to be training to be a ninja or an herbalist. So Usagi has to do all this hard work training herself and take mental abuse from Hanzo's sister all to earn her right to be Hanzo's wife, meanwhile Hanzo is doing what exactly? Existing? Being an asshole?

And I'm supposed to find all of this funny? I really hate this manga.

Usagi is still struggling, learning to cook isn't easy for her, she's also still trying to gain Ninja to become Hanzo's Wife , and having Hanzo's sister present who dislikes her already, hasn't been great. At all. To make matters worse for her, Hanzo's sisters kids don't get along with Usagi's servant, Mamezo, who is more like a friend and little brother to her than he is a servant or help. Usagi finally chooses her battles and sticks up for Mamezo when Hanzo's sisters kids set him a blaze....it is then that finally Usagi gains approval from Suzune with a twist of fate and even gains friendship with her along the way, now granted approval and passing of the Household Training. Even gifted a Kimono. Even so, Hanzo still demands Usagi graduate as a qualified Ninja before he will take her hand in marriage, despite claiming his desires to "grow" and claim her as his own..This is another great edition in the series and I can't wait to see what comes next.

Usagi finally stands up for herself in this one, but it’s short lived. While she has grown, she still continues to try and please Hanzo while not staying true to who she is. Hanzo keeps trying to push her into being a ninja when she isn’t cut out for it. It’s frustrating to see Hanzo’s behavior with her, especially when she’s so forgiving. This was a fine volume, but these little things irritate me.

I also didn’t appreciate the fat shaming. I know this was written over twenty years ago, and I don’t mind fat jokes, but it went a little overboard here. Every time she ate, she was criticized.

Was it really necessary to sidetrack the story for fat shaming? Was it?

I don't like how the others didn't try to talk sense to Suzune. I was hoping for Suzune to apologize or to show some growth but then again that reflects on some toxic family members.

Starts off with Hanzo's sister giving Usagi a hard time. Usagi seems pretty useless as potential wife of the head of the Hattori family. But she gets a chance to show she is growing up and that she can stand up for herself! That scene was very exciting. Poor Usagi! There is still the plot line of her supposedly needing to lose weight so she can be a qualified ninja. But Hanzou's got some advice for Hanzo. Some funny moments, and even some sweet romantic ones. Cliffhanger ending.

Notes on content: Some (bathing) nudity, a few mildly suggestive jokes, Usagi walks in on a partially covered Hanzo and Sara in an intimate moment

This is the volume I started with in the beginning. Just to see if I would like the series.
It's a very funny volume, Usa needs to lose weight! hahaha....

I started reading this series because there where no more translations of Hadashi de bara wo Fume, it's/I'm currently waiting for ch. 50. The seemed very good to me, so I gave it a try ^^)!
I am sure going to read more amazing manga that I'm going to like!

Hanzo's sister doesn't approve of Usagi as his bride. Hanzo invites Usagi to stay in his bedroom at night, much to Suzune and Usagi's surprise. Mamezo and Hatsune tell Usagi that they're going to get married later and Suzune freaks out. Suzune's kids keep bullying Mamezo and Hanzo notices and helps him wash up in the bath. The bullying get bad when the set Mamezo's tail on fire and he nearly dies. Usagi continues to try to lose weight, but she likes to eat too much.

Series gets better and better. Near the ending however, made me think, are you kidding me? Quite the cliffhanger though.
