Book 1: Twelve-year-old Johnny receives a pirate edition of the new video game Only You Can Save Mankind from his friend Wobbler. However, he hasn't been playing for long when the ScreeWee Empire surrenders to him. After accepting the surrender he finds himself inside the game in his dreams, where he must deal with the suspicious Gunnery Officer as well as the understanding Captain, and work out exactly what they're all supposed to do now. This might all be the result of an over-active imagination except that the ScreeWee have disappeared altogether from everyone else's copy of the game. With the help of another player, Kirsty, who calls herself "Sigourney" (as in Weaver), Johnny must try to get the ScreeWee home.

Book 2: Johnny and the Dead (1993) is the second novel by Terry Pratchett to feature the character Johnny Maxwell. The other novels in the Johnny Maxwell Trilogy are Only You Can Save Mankind (1992) and Johnny and the Bomb (1996). In this story, Johnny sees and speaks with the spirits (they object to the term "ghost") of those interred in his local cemetery and tries to help them when their home is threatened.
Book 3: After Johnny Maxwell, a boy in his early teens, finds Mrs. Tachyon, an old bag lady, by a cinema he discovers that her trolley is in fact a time machine. He goes back to his town, Blackbury, during the time of The Blitz with his friends Stephen, aka Wobbler, Bigmac, Kirsty and Yo-less (possibly because Johnny has been obsessing about the destruction of Paradise Street in a German raid). Wobbler gets left behind in 1941, and when they return for him, Johnny tries to prevent the deaths caused in the raid.

He later made a substantial public donation to the Alzheimer's Research Trust (now Alzheimer's Research UK, ARUK), filmed three television programmes chronicling his experiences with the condition for the BBC, and became a patron of ARUK. Pratchett died on 12 March 2015, at the age of 66.

Terry Pratchett’ın yazdığı şeyler arasında en sevdiğim şeyi sorsanız, aslında biraz haksızlık etmiş olursunuz. Zira çok uzunca bir süredir bu konuda nesnel olmam mümkün değil. Her bir üyesi birbirinden tamamen farklı ama bir şekilde zoraki birleşmiş tuhaf bir grup yani, Johnny’ninki.
Fakat bu grup, örneğin bir Ninja Kaplumbağalar ya da Dalton Kardeşler gibi, ağırlıkları nispeten homojen dağılmış üyelerden oluşmuyor. Tek kelimeden oluşsa da içinde koca bir derya barındırıyor bu kaçak görünümlü kelime. Ama buna geleceğim. Şimdilik sadece, serinin ilk kitabı İnsanlığı Ancak Sen Kurtarabilirsin’deki şu harikulade cümleyi koyuyorum buraya:

Evet, sadece ve sadece bu ifade için bile baştan aşağı sevebilirim tüm seriyi; çünkü ben de pek çoğumuz gibi çocukluğumu Johnny’yle birlikte doksanlı yıllarda yaşadım ve tıpkı Johnny gibi, birçoğumuz gibi, cips paketinin dibinde kalmış o parçalardan biri oldum. Her bir üyesi birbirinden tamamen farklı ama bir şekilde zoraki birleşmiş tuhaf bir grup yani, Johnny’ninki.
Fakat bu grup, örneğin bir Ninja Kaplumbağalar ya da Dalton Kardeşler gibi, ağırlıkları nispeten homojen dağılmış üyelerden oluşmuyor. Bu grubunun asli olarak tek, doğal bir lideri var ve o da elbette Johnny. Hengâmenin içinde yapayalnız, çünkü onu en iyi anlayan arkadaşları bile aslında onu tam olarak anlamıyor.

I would venture to say that these three books are the most unknown of Terry Pratchett's canon. For one thing they don't happen on Discworld but in in a very ordinary run down town in England, centering around Johnny Maxwell and his three friends.
In Only You Can Save Mankind, Johnny, whose parents are going through Trying Times, is playing his favorite video game when the aliens suddenly surrender to him instead of fighting back. He and his friends suspect a computer virus but things get even stranger when Johnny finds himself in incredibly lifelike dreams piloting a starfighter, leading the alien fleet home where they will be safe from mankind, and communicating with a girl who also is dreaming of the alien fleet. Pratchett adds those extra touches that regular readers love such as when they go by the ruined hulks of Space Invader ships tumbling in space that the aliens use to show each other what happens when you take a stand. His special genius, to my way of thinking, comes in how he treats the conversations and thinking of the kids, along with those little unexpected twists.
In Johnny and the Dead Twelve year old Johnny Maxwell is cutting through the cemetery one day with a friend when he knocks on the door of a tomb and the inhabitant answers the door. Johnny is the only one with the unique ability to wake up the dead and soon they are bothering him to stop the proposed development of their cemetery for a large corporation's offices. Once they discover they can leave the cemetery, go to the movies, and travel over telephone wires to chat on late night radio talk shows everyone else starts feeling that something isn't quite right around town too. As always, Pratchett's twists and turns of plot and conversation are hilarious while telling an enjoyable tale about living life to the fullest even after you're dead.
Johnny and the Bomb is the third in the trilogy and my favorite. Johnny crosses paths with Mrs. Tachyon, a bag lady who also is a time traveller. He and his friends travel back to WWII in their town with the predictable changing of time that must be fixed. However, instead of simply changing time back to its previous path, Johnny wants to prevent a bomb wiping out Paradise Street in the middle of the night. This necessitates a lot of maneuvering by the kids with the usual humorous Pratchett twists and turns along the way. I was surprised at what a page turner it became by the end as I stayed up way past bedtime to get Johnny and his pals home again. Here's a favorite bit of dialogue.

In the shopping mall, a joke was going wrong.
"Make me .. er," said Bigmac, "make me one with pickle and onion rings and fries."
"Make me one with extra salad and fries, please," said Yo-less.
Wobbler took a long look at the girl in the cardboard hat.
"Make me one with everything," he said. "Because ... I'm going to become a Muslim!"
Bigmac and Yo-less exchanged glances.
"Buddhist," said Yo-less, patiently. "It's Buddhist! Make me one with everything because I'm going to become a Buddhist! It's Buddhists that want to be one with everything. Singing 'om' and all that. You mucked it up! You were practising all the way down here and you still mucked it up!"
"Buddhists wouldn't have the burger," said the girl. "They'd have the Jumbo Beanburger. Or just fries and a salad."
They stared at her.
"Vegetarianism," said the girl. "I may have to wear a paper hat but I haven't got a cardboard brain, thank you." She glared at Wobbler. "You want a bun with everything. You want fries with that?"

Humor ist ja immer so eine Sache, aber bei dieser Lektüre hatte ich eine Schmunzel-Garantie. Die Reihe hat mir sogar um Längen besser gefallen als die Scheibenwelt-Romane. Johnny war mir als Protagonist sehr sympatisch. Seine Kumpels Yo-less, Wobbler und BigMac konnte ich mir auch richtig gut vorstellen. Die Lektüre war leicht und spannend und schnell. Und auch die Themen der einzelnen Bände, die man durchaus unabhängig voneinander hätte lesen können, fand ich alle ansprechend und auch gut umgesetzt. Eine klare YA-Fantasy-Empfehlung.

Johnny, a young teen, is an ordinary boy who experiences the extraordinary. In the first book "Only You Save Mankind," he dreams his way into a video game where he has to save a race of aliens from total destruction. The second book "Johnny and The Dead" he communicates with the nonliving-they prefer not to be called ghosts. The third book "Johnny and the Bomb" is time travel romp. His friends: Wobbler, an overweight computer nerd; Bigmac, an asthmatic skinhead and math genius; Yo-less, an uncool black kid; and a very smart girl who keeps changing her name become involve with his adventures despite their reluctance. They are also there for him as he deals with his parents divorcing.

These books are so wonderful. They're extremely funny (without being as crazy as the Discworld novels), philosophical, thoughtful, exciting and lovely and the four kids (five, if you count Kirsty) are a wonderful example of friendship and interesting characters. I can only rec this series to anyone who likes Pratchett and/or humorous fantasy/science-fiction. Despite being targeted for younger readers, I found them very enjoyable.

I really liked all three stories and would have given it 5 stars but for me, the bantering among all Johnny's friends got boring after a while. Other than that though, I enjoyed reading it.

A fun trilogy that ranged from "meh" to "decent" (2.5 stars)
This is a series of three books by Terry Pratchett, geared to a young adult audience, but also suitable for older readers. It follows an ordinary 12 year old British boy, Johnny Maxwell, who repeatedly finds himself in extraordinary situations involving the supernatural and science fiction.
Book #1: In Only You Can Save Mankind (2 stars)
When playing a video game called "Only You Can Save Mankind", Johnny accidentally communicates with the game’s alien characters. After discovering they are real beings, Johnny works to help them escape destruction in the game.
I'd previously listened to a dramatized audio version of this book that was produced by the BBC, and was pleasantly surprised to discover that the issues with bad language that marred the audio recording weren't present in the original story. But it was still quite confusing and generally just not that good. The narrative feels quite dated, and the computer gaming references will make most sense if you grew up in the 1980s. There also isn't as much chatter between Johnny and his friends as there is in the other books of the series, and those are the funniest bits. For me this was the weakest entry in the trilogy.

When visiting a local and historic cemetery that is threatened with being bulldozed in order to build a commercial high rise, Johnny discovers he can communicate with ghosts. Together with his friends, he teams up with them to challenge the local authorities in order to save the cemetery.
It's hard not to get behind Johnny and his friends as they take on the corporate villains. The writing is also very funny and clever in places, with ghosts (called "post-life citizens") learning Michael Jackson's moonwalk, and some great wordplay and jokes about being dead. The conversations between the kids are especially hilarious, because Pratchett often plays with double meanings, the kids being unintentionally funny in how they misunderstand things. You can't skim read, otherwise you'll miss the clever humour! Not only are there some great one liners, but there's also thoughtful content in how we think of the past and those who have gone before us.
Book #3: Johnny and the Bomb (2.5 stars)
Johnny and his friends find themselves transported back in time by a shopping trolley to 1941, at the height of World War II, right before a bomb explodes in their town. Travelling between past and present, they must work together to save lives.
The time travel leads to some good humor, especially the reactions of 1941 people to items from the 1990s, and the confusion this creates for characters from both eras is amusing. Also funny and clever is when Johnny's friend Wobbler gets stuck in 1941, and comes back "the long way" as an old man. The bag lady Mrs Tachyon is mad as a hatter and great character.
While my impressions are mixed, I can see why these three books have been successful, and there's enough humour, adventure and some solid themes about heroism and reality to make them endure.

I had tried to read this a few years back, it being Pratchett, but it was the first book of his I couldn't get into. This time around I sat down and read all three novels at one go and enjoyed them immensely.
The most important thing about the Johnny Maxwell trilogy is that it is a series of children's books. While enjoyable for adults, it was written with children in mind, and so the reader needs to be prepared for that.
In the first book Johnny has to save some aliens in a game. He does that successfully, despite the fact that no one believes him when he explains the situation. In the second book his friends are a little more supportive when he has to help the dead in the nearby cemetery maintain their cemetery. Finally, in the third book, they all end up time-travelling in order to save their town from a bomb in 1941, and a couple of them meed their grandfathers in true time-travelling fashion.
Altogether, the three books are a great example of classic fantasy elements, and contain a lot of the established Pratchettian tropes, such as the trousers of time, "Millenium Hand and Shrimp!" and the idea that someone has got to do what needs to be done.

These book were okay. Not stellar - not by a long shot - but they weren't terrible either. I had some frustration with how Johnny has a new super power every book and how slow the pacing was. Of the three, I think I preferred the first one. It was definitely the easiest for me to read, though part of that may have been writing style fatigue. I prefer to space them out but that seemed silly when they were all in one book.
Ultimately, I didn't find this trilogy all that impressive. I've left reviews on the individual books in the series, but I really don't think this is one I'll be recommending to my friends or saving a space for on my bookshelves.

A collection of the three books about Johnny Maxwell, an average English thirteen year-old (and one of the great things that Pratchett does is create a character who really is average - he's not a Chosen One, or possessed of great intelligence or heroic character, he's just kind and moral) who finds himself in extraordinary situations. Johnny deals with big issues - war and humanity in one, death and what comes after in the second, and fate and choice in the last, and while Pratchett sands down some of the darker edges of the Discworld books he does it only very slightly, and writing in 'the real world' allows him to get a little more overt at times (Johnny and the Bomb has issues of racism - both from the world of the past and, unthinkingly, from the mouth of one of our main characters - that hits pretty hard, and is handled really well). The first two are the best, I think, but all three are sharp, funny, surprisingly moving, and wrapped in big fun fantastic adventures.

Personally I love the book. Good memories.
It’s just that I read it to my kids now and I had to explain a lot. It’s dated (naturally), but now my children know that we used to have phones attached to the walls and that computer games didn’t always look like the ones that daddy plays.
But the morals stand the test of time and I still see why I could never get i to computer games after reading the book for the first time. We’ll see how it will be for my children.

Johnny Maxwell is an interesting kid, who is possibly almost too in tune with his surroundings. As usual, T. Pratchett gives an interesting take on things that perhaps would almost be considered mundane.
This is YA at it's finest, thought provoking, plenty of unexpected twists and by the end of each book, there is a good chance that you have learnt something about yourself. Well worth a look.

Not as madcap as some of Pratchett's other work, but still odd, funny, and entertaining. I liked that the three stories were only loosely connected.

This is a reread. I'm putting the trilogy here, since that's the book I'm actually reading. But I see individual stories from this book listed here as well. I am NOT going to try to organize this mess! NOTE: I only own the trilogy. I do not have the individual books. It is published by Science Fiction Book Club in 1998. I'm giving it 5 stars despite the individual 4-star ratings, just because it's such a fun book in general and I really enjoyed rereading it all.

Całkiem ciekawy zbiór opowiadań o Johnnym Maxwellu, którego spotykają dość nadnaturalne przygody. Opowiadania te może nie są aż tak błyskotliwe jak te ze świata dysku czy trylogii nomów, jednakże pomimo tego czyta się je całkiem przyjemnie. Pratchett opisując ludzi i zdarzenia jak zwykle robi to w pewien ironiczny, ale zarazem ciepły sposób. Błyskotliwość w wychwytywaniu pewnych absurdalnych zależności wraz z wcześniej wspomnianym ciepłem tworzy kolejny ciekawy zbiór, z którym warto się zapoznać. „Tylko ty możesz uratować ludzkość” to świetny obraz młodych ludzi grających w gry komputerowe oraz tego jak dzieci odnoszą się do rodziców wchodzących czasem nieświadomie na siłę w ich świat. Stawia także na głowie samą ideę wirtualnych wrogów w grach komputerowych. „Johnny i zmarli” poświęcony jest znaczeniu historii oraz tradycji w typowy Pratchettowski sposób z jednej strony ją wyśmiewając z drugiej ukazując jej ważność. „Johnny i bomba” w świetny sposób przedstawia starszych i bezdomnych, lekko zwariowanych ludzi, których można spotkać na ulicy w każdym mieście. Opisanych przy tym z niesamowitym ciepłem i zrozumieniem. Opowiada także o przenoszeniu się w czasie i odpowiedzialności za swoje czyny. Zbiór opowiadań o Johnnym nie jest książką , którą poleciłbym jako pierwszą dla osoby chcącej się zapoznać z twórczością Pratchetta, pomimo tego jednak jest warta uwagi jeśli komuś choć w minimalnym stopniu podoba się jego styl. Oczywiście dla kogoś, kto lubi Pratchetta pozycja obowiązkowa.

It's funny that so many copiers have emerged since this was first published, coming up with the idea of someone who can communicate with the dead and tries to help them, from The Sixth Sense and Ghost Whisperer, to Ghost Town and Dead Beat. This second Johnny Maxwell book is a great childrens story that manages to cross into being just as entertaining for adults.

This is an out-of-print and hard-to-find trilogy by Terry Pratchet, one of his rare forays outside the Discworld. If you're a fan of Discworld you'll be disconcerted as I was to be reading familiar Pratchett prose set in the "real" world, one with television and public transportation and teenage boys who are not also trolls.
The books were, I believe, intended for a young adult audience, so of course I liked them. They get better as they go along, too. By the third one I was definitely getting that Pratchett vibe. And even though these books are set here on Earth, Pratchett just can't help himself: the books deal with aliens, the dead, and time travel.

Let's be honest here: these are teenage sci-fi books. They arent meant to be deconstructed or thought over. That said, I still find this series to be hilarious. Being a little bit older gives you the perspective to appreciate some of the humor in a new light. This series is easy to read on a lazy afternoon or at the beach. The main criticisms I would have are that the "morals" are a bit to preachy and obvious, and some of the British humor might not translate to American readers. It can also seem a bit dated (the books take place 1993-1996). But all in all a nice fun read.

The first book in the trilogy was kind of slow and I had to work to get through it. The premise is sound, but somehow it just didn't grab me. Only my love for all things Terry Pratchett made me move on to book #2. And my loyalty was not disappointed. Books #2 and #3 were far better in my opinion, but they were made more enjoyable because I met most of the main characters in #1. There is something different in each book and I am glad I persevered.

I read this one because my daughter had introduced me to Good Omens, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Wanting to read more of Terry Pratchett, I looked on my Dad's shelves and found Going Postal and this book. Out of the three, this was my least favorite, but I still enjoyed it. Easy read, not too much detail to weigh it down, some pretty interesting situations; overall a pretty good read.

This was a decent series, which is a little disappointing from Pratchett. Not being a twelve year old boy, I must admit to falling outside the intended audience. There's some interesting ideas, but the executing was not as humorous as Pratchett usually is.

I read these books to my son. He enjoyed them, and I like them, especially Johnny and the Dead. I did not enjoy these books as much as the Discworld series, and I definitely think they are aimed at a younger audience than I fall into.

It's hilarious, maybe a little young for my age group but with adult themes and jokes. The whole concept of this book is bizzare, but bizzare in an utterly readable, laugh out loud kind of way. Also, I love the ScreeWee.

This book was boring, hard to understand and very strange.
Terry Pratchett's first chapter in the first book was muddled and confusing and made the rest harder to understand. I gave up trying in chapter 2. Though, as I read I didnt Want to put it down, but I wanted to know what he was on about?
