One of the books I read over and over and over again between ages 5-8. Growing up, we were not a wealthy family and new toys were received only for birthdays and Christmas. This book helped me appreciate my old, used toys just as much as the new ones. I still have my original copy, which I read to my daughter when she was little. It's now saved in her "special stuff" box for when she's ready to read it to / gift it to her kid(s) someday.
Oh, what a sweet book! I really loved it! When I was young, I really loved all the Little Golden Books my Mom bought for me and I am so glad I got to read this one! The book follows Christina, a little girl that loves to play with her toys and her doll Lucy, a rag doll her mom made for her. One day, a man came to the house as his car had broke down and Christina's Father went to help. The next day, the man returned with a store bought doll for Christina as a thank you gift for all her Father's help. No spoilers! I highly recommend this book for kids of all ages especially if you love dolls.
This was one of my favorite books as a child. I sadly lost my copy during one of our family moves, and while I could remember the story, I couldn’t remember the title for many years. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon the book in my library’s Little Golden Book assortment that I found it again! I was amazed to discover that my memory of the illustrations and certain details of the story were spot-on. I love that I found this book again as an adult. The enjoyment and nostalgia of reading it put a smile on my face!
This is such a good book! I hope to read it to my children someday. It has such a great lesson to it. The illustrations are so good and make the story come to life, and the story is just so understandable. It is a very sweet innocent story.
Wow. What a beautiful story from a bygone time. A girl loving a doll that her mother made for her. A father who helps a stranger with car troubles. A stranger returning with a gift of thanks for the daughter. And finally a girl being loyal to her loving doll.
My little girl loves this sweet story! Teaching how some of the best things in life aren’t things you can buy, but the things that were made with love and given in love. You can’t beat a good Golden Book!
Christina learns the true value of her rag doll after receiving the gift of a store-bought china doll. Her new doll is pretty and delicate but she enjoys life and knows love through her rag doll.
I am adding The Store-Bought Doll to my Little Golden Book collection. This 1983 story tells the tale of how a store-bought doll almost relaces a well-loved homemade doll.
