This TV series, shown in 1982, was one of the defining moments of my childhood - no, really. It introduced me to the wildlife and to the folk music of South America (which became a real passion for some time, to the confusion and annoyance of friends and relations). For other reasons (several books and another TV programme) I'd already decided I wanted to visit South America and this just added to it. My love for the altiplano was born with this series and continues to this day (yes I have been, twice - and saw a condor - and long to go back).
I entered a competition to win the book of the TV series at the time. I was absolutely convinced I'd win and gutted I didn't. I didn't get the chance to read it until I found it for £2 at a second hand book sale in Dorchester 30 years later and it made interesting reading. As well as all the wildlife stuff I expected, there was more about the political situation of the countries they visited (at least 2 under military dictatorship), which makes interesting reading as an adult. It would have bored me sideways age 11. So probably best I didn't read it then and just re-read Willard Price's "Amazon Adventure" instead.
Would have been 5 stars but disappointingly the photos are black and white. And the tape of the soundtrack to the series I had has warped, so I can't quite recreate the magic of the original series!
