Gabriel Garcia Moreno(1821-1875) was a model Catholic president of Ecuador. He courageously founded a Republic upon Catholic principles and publicly consecrated it to the Sacred Heart, and for this he was martyred by paid assassins. This biography by Fr. Berthe is the most complete and authoritative one in existence. It has been out of print in English since 1889 when it was first published.
The Very Rev. Augustine Berthe, C. SS. R. was an eloquent preacher, an able director of retreats, and a popular author.
Inspirational bio of an heroic Catholic leader fighting the good fight against masonic forces. The public loved him for he gave his all for his country...schools, hospitals, orphanages, roads but most of all great charity. At a time when the Vatican itself was under attack by the masons in the old world, Moreno was leading Ecuador into an era of growth and development both physically and spiritually.
The model Catholic Statesman Garcia Moreno! Inspiring and a must read for all to understand the virtues that a Politician should have; Courage, Humility, Respect and the Counter-Revolutionary spirit that we need so much today.
The story of Garcia Moreno shows the indomitable spirt of the Hispanic man. This man was a man of Great virtues and Faith ,whenever his nation called him he always was willing to answer to her call, same applies when it came to serving the true Universal Church. During his time many Old kingdoms betrayed the church meanwhile , his small nation that constantly was under attack by the Masonic lodges , always stood by her which is quite remarkable.
It’s rare to see a man this pious not being a priest or an Archbishop, once again always observing fast and the official practices even if it was difficult for him in his circumstances. He is a true conquistador, I hope another Garcia Moreno arises in a world filled with such uncertainties as today.
----------------------------------------- Superb! Practical application of social Kingship doctrine (see Fr. Iscara's Christendom conference). Some parts better than others. For all Catholics to read and see how it should be, see what a battle against liberal forces looks like -- to convince them that that might have been one of the last counterattacks from the Catholic side, and that now the world is pretty much completely liberal. Very inspiring! Garcia Moreno to the altars!
Garcia Moreno by Augustine Berth tells the story of the only saintly president in world history.
Garcia Moreno was a man with a "Lively faith, chivalrous honour, and a noble passion for duty." Born from a Castilian noble family, Gabriel Garcia Moreno saved his country of Ecuador from the revolutionaries and built it up to a leading nation in South America. After this martyrs' death, Leo XIII said that Ecuador was a "truly Christian State." Just looking at his physical achievements, like building the national road system, commanding the army against Peru, Columbia, Venezuela, New Granada, and constant revolutions started by the Freemasons on several occasions, starting the nation's health system, universities, missions, and an astrology facility, you can see how amazing he was.
However, there is an even greater dimension like consecrating his country to the Sacred Heart and Defending the Papal States from the hordes of Garibaldi. Furthermore, there was his own sanctity. He "treated his body as a slave or rather as a beast of burden whose of function was merely to execute the orders of his soul..." When a religious wrote to him of the persecution the religious was having to endure, Garcia Moreno replied that "I deeply sympathise with you. You have a glorious opportunity to enrich yourself for all eternity. The blows that you have received will seem less heavy if you compare them with those that I'm daily overwhelmed. Do as I do and place these outrages at the foot of the cross..."
The list continues and continues. Another great part was a list of some of his resolution in the middle of chapter 41. But you should read the book. I hope that you will be inspired as I was with the life of this saintly man who at the moment of his martyrdom cried out, "God never Dies!"
Very well written although I would like to see the treatment of his life in the form of a novel. Quite an amazing story. I am very moved his life and death. It’s quite obvious he shed his blood for Christ. May Ecuador benefit from his protection and prayers from heaven.
Gabriel Garcia Moreno seems like he was a very interesting guy. Unfortunately this book is so hagiographic that it's hard to learn much from it. I kept wondering why everyone (the people, friends and associates) kept selling him out or letting him down so consistently.
