Reads like a quest tale or fable. Juan sets on a quest to find his father, meets characters along the way. falls in love, overcomes fear, becomes brave, various adventures in the high desert of Mexico setting.

Author was Mexican by birth, a botanist, and spent most of his life in Mexico.

This is an overlooked classic in my humble opinion.
