In this first of a trilogy we see the War of 1812 and the events leading up to it through the eyes of twelve year old Manly Treegate, an orphan growing up in the home of his uncle Peter Treegate in Salem, Massachusetts.
Manly, an American citizen, is impressed against his will to serve on the British frigate Leopard in 1807. He experiences the cruelties of life in the British navy and sees action in several battles as a powder boy before falling overboard during a battle against a French warship off the coast of Haiti.
Peter is rescued by Haitian pirates and finally finds his way home to Boston.
I didn't feel this was up to the level set by the first four books. While it's set in a definite time and place, it doesn't have many close ties to historical events. Instead, the large portion of it is a meandering sea story without any clear purpose. I also didn't find Manly Treegate to be as engaging a character as his older relatives.
Great YA book re: War of 1812. Recommended by pal and folk hero Truman Price (of Columbia Basin Books http://oldchildrensbooks.com/) as superior to may contemporary series. I enjoyed it and still have his copy...
And I see, after adding this that Wibberly authored the _Mouse That..._ series. Are you serious?
I read this book to my boys as they were studying American History. This fiction book takes a first person look at life and happenings in New England after the American Revolution and during the French Revolution.
