Personal Reaction:
I really enjoyed this book especially because recently this year I have gotten more into racecar driving! Earlier this year I went to a Nascar race and Jeff Gordon was racing in it so I chose to read and enjoy this book about him and how he began driving. I really liked how inviting and bright the front cover of the book was, that made me more excited to read it. The book was filled with pictures and captions explaining what race it was taken from. The hook at the beginning of the book was definitely what kept me reading and got me really into it because it was narrating one of his races where he was very far behind but managed to catch up and take first place! Just by reading that I felt the rush and excitement of the race.

Purposes/Use in the Classroom
Read aloud to make a curricular connection
-This book could be read during a time when students are being taught about all of the different kinds of jobs. It could be accompanied by a time where parents come in and talk about their career, if one of the parents is a racecar driver.
-It could also be read during a day when a Nascar race is happening nearby or if it is a big race!
-It is a great story of how Jeff Gordon followed his dreams and he reached his goal. The teacher could ask students what their dreams and goals are and they can use Jeff Gordon's perseverance to encourage them to follow their dreams just like he did.

Independent reading
-This could be read by students who love racecar driving or driving in general or racing! This is a great, fun book to learn about many aspects of racecar driving and everything that it takes to be able to become a successful driver.
-This would be for students in 2nd-3rd grade.

For nonfiction
-This book was filled with nonfiction conventions including a glossary where students could reference vocabulary words they may be unfamiliar with.
-There is a section in the back that has additional reading and websites with similar information that students could go to and learn more information that the book didn't cover.
-It has an index with topics and page numbers so the students can easily navigate through the book.
-There are at least 2 real photographs with captions on every page layout informing readers about particular races and what is going on in each picture.

Other as Appropriate: perspectives
-This book was great about covering many different perspectives in Jeff Gordon's life. It obviously covered mostly his perspective, however, it included the perspective of his team, his wife, and fans, which many readers can relate to as they are reading the book.
-They created the book in a way that you don't have to love racecar driving the like the book. It is simply like any other book explaining the life rising to fame of a celebrity following his or her dream doing what they love, which is something most people can relate to.
