My Perfect Screwup

Rate this book
Daniel

I got my Ph.D. and a fantastic teaching job by keeping my nose to the grindstone and avoiding relationships. Not that I didn’t like men—quite the opposite—but getting involved took time I didn’t have.

One summer evening, I went out for a drink and met the most beautiful guy I’d ever seen. After an unforgettable night, I couldn’t wait to meet up again, but I missed our date. Imagine my panic when I realized we’d forgotten to trade numbers.

Caleb

A summer job as a law firm intern kept me busy, but one night, I needed to blow off some steam. At the bar, a gorgeous man saved me from an overzealous admirer. My rescuer gave me the kiss of my life, and I wound up in his bed. After the night turned out to be even better than the kiss, we made a date to meet again. Unfortunately, he no-showed on me, leaving me disappointed and confused for months.

The following spring, when I showed up for a class taught by some hotshot new professor, a breathtaking man walked into the room. My heart stopped because my new professor was the guy who stood me up last summer. Was I glad to see him? I wasn’t sure. But one thing was certain—I was the very last person he wanted in his class.

One man is trying to get tenure in the job of his dreams; the other is set to graduate and begin law school. Life brought them together under random circumstances, and their path isn’t an easy one. How can they make a relationship work without sacrificing everything?

My Perfect Screwup is a contemporary gay romance involving a missed opportunity and second chance to get it right. The book includes a relationship between a college professor and student, age gap, unwavering connection, incendiary heat, found family, and dreamy HEA.

My Perfect Screwup is a MM, stand alone, age gap, student/professor romance by Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood. This is the story of two men who met and had an instant and unforgettable connection, only when they made plans for a second date, one of them was a no show. Now they are being given a second chance at a first love. Will they get it right this time?

Daniel Quinn is thirty three years old and Caleb Carson is twenty two. The first time they met was in New York. A night out in a bar when Caleb needed a little help with an over zealous pursuer. Help Daniel was happy to give. The night turned unforgettable. But they forgot to exchange numbers when they made plans to meet up again. Only Daniel never made it.

Six months later, it’s January and the beginning of Caleb’s final semester of college at Marlowe University in Vermont. When he walks into his new history class, he can’t believe who his new professor is! The man he has never been able to forget. The man he cried over for weeks. Daniel can’t believe who he sees sitting in the back of his classroom. A man who is in his dreams every night but now, with his dream job, Caleb is a man he needs to stay far away from. He could ruin everything he’s been working so hard for.

Clearly fate has brought these two back together for a reason. Now it’s up to them to figure out if they can make it work. But with their differences, not to mention, a friend of Caleb’s who fancied himself more than just a friend, things are a little bit complicated. These two will just have to decide if they care enough for one another to figure out a way to move forward, together.

This was a cute story but for some reason, I just couldn’t connect with the characters. Some of the behavior was immature but in the end, I did enjoy the way the characters all developed. I did like the way that Caleb’s friends accepted Daniel into their group, in a found family way. The one with the most character development of them all was Caleb’s friend, Luca. I don’t know if the authors plan on writing books for any of these secondary characters but there are lots of possibilities here, especially Luca!

Every time I open a book by Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood I know I’m in for a real treat and this time was no exception.
I just love instant connections and this story didn’t disappoint with Daniel and Caleb’s night spent together. Unfortunately, circumstances beyond their control saw time go by with no further contact until Daniel appeared as Caleb’s History Professor.
Misunderstandings, worry about the age gap, a friend who wanted to be more than a friend, and secrecy needed until the faculty were informed about their relationship, all were pressures these two had to overcome. The description of these concerns were incredible. The authors were so sensitive to the MCs feelings and the inner dialogue expressed so much. All those things had me worrying along with them. I was glad to see that even though there were misunderstandings, they never lasted for long because they made a point to talk about them and worked to solve things as a couple.
While the spicy hot scenes were exactly that, their tender times were beautiful and so very well written. It was the perfect balance.
The side characters are wonderful. Although, one was on my hit list for a while, but by the end of the book I was hoping he gets his own book. A really excellent story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Unfortunately this turned out to be my least favorite of Ryan’s & Josh’s work so far. The majority of the faults here lay within the main romance itself, and the fact that I just felt no chemistry between Caleb & Daniel.

Caleb had much more chemistry with his friend Luca. It felt organic rather than forced, as was the case with him and Daniel. I don’t understand the decision to give him and Luca tons of full scenes together, where as all of Caleb’s and Daniel’s scenes for the first half of the book felt like play-by-play summaries. This only made the issues I had with their romance much, MUCH worse as we got past the halfway point.

Because the set up for the relationship was pretty terrible, it made the moments of levity & sweetness feel hollow…and worse, it made their annoying blunders in communication far less forgivable. Even before their romance was set in stone, these two seemed to bring out the immature brattiness in each other, and that doesn’t change once they become official.

They always act like idiots on the precipice of losing their temper, and sometimes it’s like they forget what they’ve said or done 5 seconds after it happened. One example that was particularly blatant: after Caleb and Daniel had the most unnecessary childish fight in existence, Caleb convinced himself that Daniel would want to break things off. Once Caleb gets back to Daniel’s home, Daniel surprises him by giving him a key, saying he’d like for Caleb to come over whenever he pleases. And Caleb STILL THINKS Daniel is like 2 seconds away from ending their relationship. These characters are supposed to be smart Ivy Leaguers?? Caleb is probably the most ditsy oblivious MC I’ve read about all year, and I guess to balance things out, they made Daniel misconstrue things and forget important clarifications almost equally as much.

This whole thing feels like the set up for a second-chance romance story between Caleb and Luca…as I don’t buy for a second that he and Daniel could last long at all.

I enjoyed this hot and sweet romance about two lovely men who needed a second chance to get their HEA. The authors give us a realistic love story that has everyday challenges like missed connections, misunderstandings, jealousy, careers developing and distance to navigate for Daniel and Caleb to finally be together.

When they first meet sparks fly and they have a strong sizzling instant connection but circumstances keep them from meeting again till they are shocked to see each other in class where Caleb is Daniel’s student. I found it hard to empathise with Daniel after their second meeting but the fear based reactions especially as they were revealed later were very realistic. Their initial reactions to everything they face are a bit extreme but the drama doesn’t last and they always find a way to communicate and recalibrate their bond.

Expect:
* Professor Student
* Insta Lust
* Second chance
* Age gap
* Found family
One of the standouts for me was how well the authors handled Luca and Caleb’s friendship.
I loved a lot of the supporting characters especially Rachel and Luca. I do hope Luca gets a story I would love to read that.

This is the first book I've read from Ryan and Joshua and I was excited to read it because I've heard good things about their writing.

Caleb and Daniel meet, have an unforgettable hookup and then through a series of unfortunate events don't meet again until Caleb becomes Daniel's student. Caleb needs the class to graduate, but Daniel wants Caleb out of his class. They just can't stay away from each other and find their way back together.

The things I liked about the book were also the things that made it difficult to enjoy the book. I liked the chemistry between Caleb and Daniel, but it was a bit too instalove for my taste, and both men pining for each other for months with only a half-hearted attempt at contacting each other was too much for me. I loved how smart they both were, and how they connected over shared interests and intelligent conversation- but I hated how many random dramatic misunderstandings there were throughout the book. For two intelligent men, they jumped to conclusions an awful lot. I guess that's what you get when you start building a relationship on chemistry over trust.

The other reasons for my rating was that the pacing was inconsistent throughout- certain parts of the book were very detailed while others were barely glossed over. I thought the ending wrapped up in a too convenient way with

If you like instalove, age gap, teacher student romances with a side of drama, then you should check it out!

Professor and Student Age Gap

Caleb is trying to shake off the unwanted Attention of a man in the gay bar in NYC. He sidles up to another lone figure sitting with his drink And asks him to pretend to be his boyfriend. When his stalker finds him again, sitting beside someone else, his pretend boyfriend leans over and gives him the kiss of his dreams. Stalker disappears and Caleb and ‘boyfriend Daniel’ leave together.

It’s noon next day when Caleb leaves Daniel’s house, both men have enjoyed their evening beyond their dreams. They have arranged to meet back up later that evening in the ‘Zebra’ bar again.

Caleb counting down the hours, arrives on time but after waiting a couple of hours, Daniel is a no show. Heartbroken he heads home.

Some months later, he’s back at Marlowe College where he is preparing to graduate and go to Law School. His groups of friends who share accommodation have been so supportive and comforting to him in his disappointment over Daniel.

When he goes into his History class he is dumbfounded to see that his Professor in none other than Daniel. More astonishing still is the way his Professor stumbles and mumbles incoherently through his introductory speech when he sees Caleb sitting in his class.
********************
Fate is doing a great job here with these two MC, both of whom are adorable and so looking for their ‘ One’. Caleb is 22 and Daniel is 34, a student and a professor.

They need to get talking, now.

There could be trouble with faculty with that, plus, one of Caleb’s close FWB, might have issues too.

I loved this story and the way the two MC tried to build a strong relationship besides the huge chemistry attraction and the age gap, between them.

Don’t recall having read Joshua Harwood and Ryan Taylor’s books before, I’d need to check my Goodreads page. I’m chasing down more as this one ‘The Prefect Screwup’ was brilliant. Loved the side characters that were Caleb’s housemates. I’d love to see them get their own stories, especially Luca and William, who loves his makeup and 💄.

You won’t ‘screwup’ if you add this one to your TBR list.

3.75 stars, rounded up

- age gap
- student x professor
- one night stand
- second chance

Daniel meets the gorgeous Caleb while out for a drink at a local bar. Caleb plops down beside him and asks him to play his boyfriend to get rid of an overeager admirer. The two share an earth shattering kiss that leads to a night of mind blowing sex.

The next morning Daniel promises to meet Caleb at the bar again for a date, but no shows. Caleb is crushed, but moves on, until months later he walks into the last class he needs to graduate and it's taught by non other than the man who ghosted him.

Daniel doesn't want him in the class, but there's no way to avoid Caleb no matter how hard he tries. & the more time passes, the more miserable he gets because he can't stop thinking about Caleb and needs to tell him the truth, consequences be damned!

This was my first book by this husband duo, but I’m definitely down to read more! Daniel and Caleb’s story is a little too insta-lovey for my taste, but I still really enjoyed it despite that. The sexual chemistry between these was off the charts, and their story is both steamy & sweet.

Plus they ended up getting the HEA they deserved even after that drama with a certain someone (who I hope gets his own book because he deserves some love), the squabbles about their age differences/being in a professor/student relationship, and the obstacles in the way of their future.

A STUDENT / PROFESSOR AGE GAP SECOND CHANCE ROMANCE!

Wow these amazing authors never disappoint!
Sassy yet complex characters with heart and soul!

This was a very gripping yet complex, love story showcasing age gap, misunderstandings, second chances and unrequited love….

A chance meeting in a bar in New York leads to the most unforgettable hookup Daniel Quinn and Caleb Carson has ever experienced with so much ecstasy and a deep soul connection but both leave New York with empty hearts… until seven months later they meet again… in Professor Quinn’s classroom….

“one hookup—admittedly, the hottest one of my life—it could all be over within one school year of teaching.”

They were just so cute and awkward in the beginning…

““Remember the stupid way I acted when you showed up in my class that day?”

I loved their fun dynamic in and out of the bedroom and all the kinky things they discovered…

I loved how Daniel grounded Caleb and encouraged him in all his endeavours!

But against all odds they fought to be together and to explore the beautiful soul rendering connection they have with the help of sweet and understanding, supporting friends and family…

I loved the side characters especially Luca and I hope he gets his own story as well….

“I’d really screwed up. Little did I know then, but it was my perfect screwup.”

This is their story….

Wonderful, felt real. Daniel and Caleb’s relationship evolves naturally (once they get past the initial missed connection), with the little hiccups that do occur in early relationships – the insecurities, the misunderstandings etc - and there are obstacles, but what I really liked is that they’re always trying to move their relationship forward – no artificial dramas. I did wish Caleb had been a bit smarter and a bit firmer about boundaries with Luca though. Extra special in this story – and I’ve noticed this with these authors before – is how the authors have brought to life those tiny magic moments in a new relationship (ie. Lying on a blanket beneath the stars, looking at the bay by moonlight etc). They transported me right there into the moment & had me thinking ‘wow, that’s real’. Amazing. Highly recommend this story. I loved the relationship between Daniel & Caleb and will definitely re-read this story.

Daniel may have screwed up but this book is definitely NOT a mistake. Oh my sweet Dolly but this story was amazing! Daniel and Caleb had such an incredible instant connection and they missed their chance. But the universe wasn’t about to let that go and they meet again several months later and get a second shot. These two were meant to be! I have to say that one of the things I loved most about these characters was their communication and their commitment to making it work. They get a second chance and they make it work. Is it perfect? Of course not. Do they have some missteps along the way? Who doesn’t? This has some oh so perfectly sweet swoony moments and some times of pure heartache and is so worth a read!

I so enjoyed this story! I’m always a sucker for second chance and I love that while there WAS a kind of miscommunication, it gets addressed and doesn’t throw the whole story topsy turvy. I think Daniel and Caleb’s “reunion” scene may be one of my favorite things ever, and it definitely had me giggling.
I loved how Daniel and Caleb (eventually) really worked as a team, stepping up for each other when they needed it.

This was such a sweet easy read!! A story of instalove and undeniable chemistry, this low angst student/teacher book was a great palette cleanser and a nice break from my normally darker reads. Whilst it did step away from a more realistic approach, it was still a very pleasant read and sometimes that is a nice change! It left me feeling warm and gooey inside, with an equal balance of sweet and spice, I hope Luca gets a story next as he is so worthy of love!

It started well and I thought I was going to love it but unfortunately in the end it was just ok for me. It went from a 4* to a 2* by the time I finished

I loved the back and forth between their present and their past encounter in the first chapters. It was well done and both fun & sexy. But by 37% they were past the misunderstanding and decided to date and I thought “well what’s left then?” Usually if they get together quickly the rest will be a slow explorations of a kink or they want to go slow in bed but here there’s nothing. They have sex on their first week back together and it got very boring after that. The rest was filled with minor problems and a LOT of “oh but what if something happens to us” for no reason. It got tiring and I felt like I was watching 2 teenagers discover love.

I honestly wondered if it would evolve into a MMM with Luca because I didn’t see what else could make the rest interesting. BTW Caleb is truly blind for not realizing that Luca was head over heels for him with the way he was behaving at the beginning. Like how did he think the breakfast thing was a best friend with benefits thing to do?

Honestly at times they even talked like teens as well. The reasons I wanted to try those authors is because it’s rare to find male authors in the gay romance genre and we often see reviews complaining about women authors not knowing how gay sex work or how men talk. Well I’m not sure men authors know better. They didn’t talk like their age and they behaved like me when I was 16 so…Honestly they had lots of mini tantrums that were ridiculous (“Do I look like your dad?”)

It was also very confusing when, even though they’ve already been dating for weeks they have the discussion about “let’s be together/ now we’re partners.” I don’t know if it’s because I’m not American but this didn’t make any sense to me. You’re dating, you’re crazy about each other, you are partners.

There were also minor things that I didn’t like:
lots of useless scenes about what time they’ll meet for diner where nothing happen
they both thought the worst of the other one immediately and I thought that was so sad honestly (when Daniel didn’t show up/ when Caleb left with Luca/ when Daniel didn’t react like Caleb wanted when he told him his big news…)
some kinks were teased but not explored much or described. From their dirty talks during their first night I thought their sex scenes would be more interesting but it felt flat. A shame in my opinion. It could have save the book from being boring
There was no description about Daniel’s house which I find weird. There are several scenes there before we even learn he lives in a house and not an apartment
The Europe trip plot seemed very useless to me

Note that it says 300p but it’s 275 because of all the promo at the end

I don’t think I’ll try anything by those authors in the future.

I really loved this book. Daniel met Caleb at at bar when Caleb asked him to be his pretend boyfriend from a creeper. After a kiss to end all kisses they went home to Daniel’s place. Fast forward 8 months and Caleb is at Marlowe college and was looking forward to his classes of history. When the professor walks in, it was Daniel. They were both shocked to see each other. After a few months they started talking and slowly going back to the way it was when they first met. Great world building, high heat and great chemistry between them. Here is hoping there are more books in the series for Caleb’s friends.

Mental Daffodil…

Daniel and Caleb had one night of pure bliss and connection that neither of them had ever felt before. They agree to meet again in the evening after Daniel attends a meeting but he never shows and Caleb is heartbroken. They never exchanged numbers but Caleb even attempts to return to Daniel’s apartment looking for answers within a few days following.

Months go by and Caleb is still not over that night. As he steps into the class he needs for his graduation the last thing he expected was to see that his new professor was Daniel.

These guys were a hot mess for each other. With weeks of denial and some angst we finally get to see these two reconnect and fall for one another fast and furious. Daniel and Caleb both have moments of insecurity which brought some light drama to the story. But we also get passion, strength and a desire to be together over all the hurtles they have in their way.

I enjoyed this mental daffodil and hope we get to see some characters in the future.

Daniel, a professor and Caleb hook up one night. Seven months later, they find out Caleb is now his student. Even though their night was magic, they didn't get each other's numbers and now it's forbidden, but the fire didn't go away. This is a beautiful love story that shows the value of communication and honesty in a relationship. Full of steamy times, it had lots of romance, jealousy, friendship and passion. I enjoyed Caleb and Daniel's story very much. I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary opinion.

Another great read from Josh & Ryan! This book was the perfect blend of spice and sweetness. One of those taboo relationships that work is because both are mature enough to handle situations while remaining adults. Before this story I only really read their sports romances and it was nice to see it translates just as beautifully to a non sports setting.

My Perfect Screwup by Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood is a compelling romance that centres around Daniel and Caleb, whose paths intertwine in unexpected ways.

I love Ryan and Josh’s books and My Perfect Screwup is another wonderful read by these amazing authors.

Daniel is a dedicated professor striving for tenure, has always prioritized his career over relationships. However, one fateful night, he meets Caleb, a captivating law intern, and they share an unforgettable experience together. Unfortunately, a missed opportunity to exchange numbers leaves them both longing for more.

Months later, fate brings them back together when Caleb finds out his new professor is the same man who stood him up. Their connection remains undeniable, and their chemistry is palpable, but circumstances are complicated. As Daniel navigates his academic ambitions and Caleb prepares to start law school, the question of making a relationship work becomes a daunting challenge.

‘You are my future, not a damned job. I’m good at what I do, and I’ll find a position somewhere. It may not be a top ten school, but it won’t matter because you’re the top one.’

As all of Ryan and Josh’s books, My Perfect Screwup delivers a dreamy HEA, showcasing the power of love to overcome obstacles and bring two souls together.

This book is a must-read that will leave you with a smile on your face, a sense of fulfilment and hope, and a warm feeling in your heart. I highly recommend it.

I received an ARC from the authors for free, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.

Nice love story with the professor/student trope.
The MCs had an hookup in NY over the summer, then they met again, months later, at the University where Daniel is a teacher and Caleb is his student.
Their sexual chemistry is undeniable, the sex scenes are very steamy and they show their strong connection.
I feel like it there was too much insta love between them and the University not having any issues with them dating seemed a little too easy.

What prevented me from giving an higher rate was all Luca's situation because Caleb did not handled that well: he should have talked to his best friend sooner, at least as soon as he noticed his changed behaviour (he was way more affectionate than usual in front of their friends), instead of slleping and cuddling with him in the same bed. I cannot believe he didn't understand how Luca's feelings for him were so strong. And he should have talked to his boyfriend too, about his arrangement with Luca, regardless of whether Daniel was meeting him or not.
Sometimes their miscommunication was too intense for two people who were eager to committ to one another; I think Caleb was a little immature and too prone to drama.

The side characters are all great and I loved how they were very supportive of each others. Thanks to their help, the epilogue was very beautiful.
I hope Luca will have his own story, because he deserved to be loved.

Daniel and Caleb are perfect together

Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood have done it again with this new book. They tell the story of how they met one summer night in the Thirsty Zebra; Daniel inadvertently standing up Caleb because they neglected to exchange numbers.

Then the story picks up seven months later when Caleb is in his history class and finds out that his professor is none other than Dr. Daniel Quinn. Later, after a lot of talking between both Daniel and Caleb, things are better between them.

Daniel and Caleb definitely have chemistry between them and they burn up the pages and the sheets as well. And there is definitely a very dreamy HEA as well.

If you have not read My Perfect Screwup, I highly recommend you do.

We begin this journey in New York at a bar with Daniel who wanted a drink and got a hot, young hookup and a wonderful connection with Caleb. But it wasn’t the right time for them, no matter how much of a connection they had. After their amazing night together they forget to trade numbers, but they had made plans to meet up again. Unfortunately, fate was against them because timing matters.

Now 7 months later our journey picks back up in Vermont with Caleb starting a new semester and his new hot history teacher is none other than Daniel. Daniel is a cute flustered mess when he notices Caleb.
The problem is they both were shocked to see each other and while Caleb handled it better and more maturely, Daniel panicked badly. There were a lot of hurt feelings on Caleb’s part from being stood up and Daniel’s heart hurt because of that missed date and wanting to see Caleb again so badly.

Their love story started out with bad timing and then restarted with a rocky path. These two men were made for each other though and fate was there to make sure they got their second chance. Of course there’s gotta be some drama, they are professor/student though that was handled with a lot of maturity once they decided to go for it and it wasn’t made into too big a deal. It was life that really caused the most bumps and hiccups. Ordinary, every day problems. Jealousy, careers, distance, miscommunications. But these two at every step of the way pushed through, communicated and tried their best to find a solution that was best for both of them. At times I thought there was a bit of immaturity in how they both behaved but it was momentary before the other called them on it and they were able to act like grownups.

These two had a lot of passion and chemistry, they were the perfect match. They had cute, funny moments and lots of playfulness. They were so sweet I wouldn’t be surprised if I didn’t end up with a cavity. And they had lots of corny lines to each other, but it was the good corny. That I’m so in love and I’m all mushy corny that every couple experiences especially in the honeymoon period.

The side characters were great, I’d love to see them get their HEA’s. The writing was well done. It was a good, low angst, high sweet love story.

This is the first book I read by this writing team, but it definitely won't be the last. I am happy for the opportunity to help out this talented team with honest review.
In this spicy yet loving romance, we have a lot of things that could implode this relationship before it can even start. With a double misassumption, the failure to exchange info, and a missed date all lead to some major pining and hurt hearts. Then the mutual reaction to the sudden reappearance in each other's lives sends them farther off course. Then throw in the friend that has now decided he wants more. Can these two find a way to each other to see if they can get around the issues that they face, like a significant age gap and fraternization rules to see if the connection they both feel can grow? Some moments seem they may sabotage them, more like misunderstandings and hurt feelings or lack of. Can they find a way to have their HEA? What moves will they each be willing to make for the other when it appears another thing could change things once again once they find a course to stay on? Will a solution come from an unexpected ally?
The angst level is low overall. And though this is a fast, intense, fiery, and spicy romance, they have moments when their love shines through for a slower but no less intense and emotional meeting of the heart, soul, and body.

I loved this second chance romance. We didn't really get much of their first meeting, except in flashbacks, but when Caleb and Daniel cross.l paths again, the story starts to unfold. Luca was a little insufferable at first, but I'm glad they didn't make him the villain. Overall, this was a sweet and sexy story.

Dr Daniel Quinn and Caleb Carson meet in the ‘Thirsty Zebra’ bar in the summer, and have such a connection, they have a mind blowing hookup, but then go their separate ways.

Fast forward to the following year when Caleb walks into his history lecture at Marlow University, where he finds his lecturer is non other than Dr Quinn. While taking the register Daniel is shocked to see Caleb is one of his students, he stumbles to get words out.

They have the instant attraction again, but this time they decide to start up a relationship, but they have to disclose their involvement to the dean of the university.

Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood have written my perfect comfort read. I adore this book and try to read it at least once a year. This time however, was the first time i had listened to it. Narrated by Alexander Cendese, he has done a fantastic job of brining the characters of Daniel and Caleb to life, just as Ryan and Josh had written them. It was good to hear about Luca again, knowing this time he gets his HEA in Crossed Sticks which is out now and an incredible book.
I love this book and love the authors.
