Outpouring: A Theological Witness

Rate this book
Outpouring is a theological exploration of religious revivals and awakenings. The authors reflect on God's pursuit of human persons in the light of Scripture and classical Christian doctrine. They also take seriously eyewitness testimonies to God's presence and power in events like the Great Awakenings and the Asbury Outpouring of 2023, allowing such events to raise fresh questions and to enliven theology. Inspired by their participation in the Asbury Outpouring, they bear witness to the ancient conviction that theology, prayer, and praise belong together.

Fun(ny) fact(s): This is just casually another book written by one of my professors.

Favorite quote/image: "As the body of Christ, the church is no ordinary body. It is a body united with God and thereby in the process of deep transformation. It is a body being sanctified, hallowed, made holy. It is a body being prepared for death. It is a body that lives in anticipation of resurrection." (pg. 81)

Honorable mention: "At the heart of the concept of outpourings is the idea that, from time to time and in ways that are unscripted and beyond human control, God makes God's presence and power manifest in a manner that is readily discernible, that leads to repentance and deep joy, and that conveys life-changing forgiveness and grace." (pg. 26)

Why: While although specifically about outpourings (and the 2022 Asbury outpouring in particular), Vickers and McCall's short book is actually a beautiful reflection on classical Christian doctrines, such
as the Trinity, Christology, salvation, creation, humanity, and the Holy Spirit, and how those relate to our participation in the body of Christ, ordinary and extraordinary means of grace, and our experiences encountering the most Holy God.
