From the 17th century Puritans through Youth for Christ and postmodernism, the 16 essays in Reckoning with the Past illuminate the history of U.S. evangelism. The essays include ideological origins of the American Revolution, the popular theology that sprang from the Second Great Awakening, and developments in Pentecostalism, millennialism, and fundamentalism.
Darryl G. Hart (Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University) directs the honors programs and faculty development at the Intercollegiate Studies Institute and serves Westminster Seminary California as adjunct professor of church history. He has written or edited more than fifteen books, including Defending the Faith, a biography of J. Gresham Machen. He is coeditor of the American Reformed Biographies series.
A delightful tour through various aspects of the Christian history of our country, from early American through present day, guided by doyens in the field, e.g. Stout, Hatch, Noll, Marsden, and Hart (editor). Definitely recommend the chapters, “Perry Miller’s Rehabilitation of the Puritans: a Critique” and “the Irony of the Enlightenment for Presbyterians in the Early Republic”.
This is an anthology of some very good essays that are crucial for understanding the American religion. Read the essays by Stout, Marsden and Hatch, at least.
