I went to the library last night looking for a nice fun intro to linguistics, something that would show off how interesting the subject is, without being academic and dense and not fun. This seemed innocuous enough to be worth trying, since it's so brief. However, by doing so much to condense and compartmentalize and popularize these questions, the book lost a lot of the potential to generate interest or explain anything in any depth. It was much less informative than I'd hoped for. I would say, don't bother. It isn't bad, but the writing is boring, and most of the information is obvious and boring.
