Murdering a city guard is a treasonous act, punishable by death.
And when Laurel Gunderson finds herself in that exact situation, she knows a quick death would be a mercy. For if the King of Axtria learned of the existence of a halfling-elf, there would be no telling what atrocity he might inflict upon her.
One action, one job, throws Laurel’s life into utter turmoil. The careful choices made throughout her life to remain a secret are at risk. There is only one option. Laurel and her closest confidant, Cole, choose to flee for their lives.
But when the open road cannot offer Laurel and Cole the sanctuary they need, they’re presented with an offer neither of them knew existed. A proposal from Laurel’s ex-lover.
A resistance is growing, gathering in the shadows across Axtria, working to undo the laws laid down. The aim is to return Axtria to a place of liberty. Something Laurel has dreamed of all her life.
Taking a stand with those who oppose Eberlim, Laurel and Cole face their greatest challenges yet. Protecting those who cannot defend themselves. Risking it all for a chance of freedom. With her life on the line, can Laurel resist the man she’s never stopped loving, to continue living a life of fear and secrets or will her heart win out?
Without risk, there is no reward.
Without the resistance, there is no future.

I received an arc for this and this is my honest review.

It's KU and releases on 1st August!

Everything about this is a solid yes from me. Literally everything ticked my boxes. The only reason it took me so long to get through was because of how crazy work has been for me.

It's amazingly written, I love the characters, the development, the world building. I have so much I'd love to say about this but honestly I'm still reeling from that cliff hanger. So I'm going to pause and edit this review in the morning when I've processed fully but this is absolutely in my top reads for the year.

*edit

Ok so we have our FMC, Laurel (half-elf) and her “brother”, Cole. It follows them and their life on the run after killing a guard. Enter Enzo, the ex and a promise of more safety within the resistance, which Ofc they join. It’s a second chance romance with a whole lot of well done tension and I’m not normally partial to that. Jack is super sweet, Oscar and Luigi too are just such great father figures. The only one I kinda disliked is Robyn. I thought she was a bit of a witch but I’m hoping there’s an explanation for that! I just can’t adequately express how much I fell into this world, the first hasn’t even been published yet and I can’t wait for the second already.

This light fantasy read had action from the beginning of the book and kept me captivated throughout. I absolutely loved Laurel & how she developed as character.

There was also some romance of course with a little bit of spice. I could not believed that I had reached the end of the book. Oh my gosh, what will happen next…

The author’s writing style makes for easy reading and I highly recommend this book.

"Life is priceless. But it seems freedom is to cost a steady sum."

Enchanting, magical and thrilling - this book reminded me why I love fantasy. If you're a fan of Throne of Glass, The Lord of the Rings and fairytales, then this book is for you.

What to expect when reading 'In The Cover of Darkness':
- a captivating plot
- delightful characters, who aren't necessarily likeable (very refreshing to see)
- logical worldbuilding with a compelling and lovely magic system
- a strong and badass fmc
- incredible magical abilities
- a great sense of humour
- refreshing character dynamics

Some elements/tropes you might like:
found family, second-chance romance, hidden identities, schemes, rebels

The story is pretty easy to get into, and the fast pacing adds to the book being so hard to put down. I'm really looking forward to learning more about these characters and seeing how the story unfolds.

I really loved the cover photo of this book. It is absolutely gorgeous and stunning. I love the shade of Red in it. I received an ARC to review it and I will be honest that I seriously enjoyed reading it a lot.

The story revolves around the character Laurel who is a half-elf and I really enjoyed reading her character. Her character development was a treat to read. The relationship between Laurel and Enzo is quite complicated. The writing skills of the author are engaging and the book is filled with action, and adventure.

I really loved the twists and turns and overall I felt that it was a light-hearted read for me. I will definitely recommend this book to all the fantasy lovers. It is now available on Kindle Unlimited too. Grab your copy today guys.

I received an ARC for this novel in exchange for my honest review.

The concept for this manuscript was really interesting. It's about half elf Laurel and her struggle to survive in a kingdom where Halflings are enslaved and all the other elves are gone. She and her best friend Cole kill the wrong man for a job: a guard for the imperials. But when the mysterious Enzo reappears in their lives and offers them a way out, they have a chance not only to survive, but to do some good for the resistance.

Like I said: love the concept. I love fantasy literature, so this sort of plot line is right up my alley. That plus a steamy romance between the female lead and a hot guy? Sign me up!

That having been said, there were a lot of things that kept me from really immersing myself in the story:

Fantasy Terminology/World Building:

There's a lot about the fantasy world this is meant to take place in that I still don't completely understand, namely with the races that exist in this world. For example, the author introduces a race called a "gront" very early on. It's described as being tall, stinky, and having tusks-- but none of that really tells me what it is. Do they have special abilities? Do they tend toward specific dispositions/tendencies? Are they all guards on the bad guy's side? This was the sort of thing that happened throughout the novel, which made it hard to pin down the mechanics/make-up of this universe.

Then there are other races where the reader already has an idea as to what they are-- like elves. The main character is a half elf, so we get a little more information on elves than the other races. But there's still stuff that doesn't quite work. For instance, the main character points out that she is particularly recognizable because her elfin heritage gave her unique features (beyond her pointed ears). She's described as having dark hair, but a lot of the other characters have dark hair too. So, the question is, what are these unique features? There's also some inconsistencies in the lore: elves have heightened healing abilities, so Laurel heals her serious wounds quickly, but then her bruises often linger. You would think it would actually be the opposite though.

Phrasing:

Sometimes the way the author phrased things just felt a little bit off. Phrasing like "sitting before the fireplace" can feel really formal, which didn't quite fit the vibe of the rest of the novel. Additionally, there were a lot of instances where the author used the characters' eyes to express their emotions (___'s eyes were filled with sadness, for example). It was a little repetitive at times; I think it would have helped to incorporate more actions like flinches or clenching fists.

Lastly, there were times where it felt like the author would have two different sentences that were ultimately kind of saying the same thing. The main difference is that one would show and one would tell. Using the former technique and deleting all those extra sentences explaining it further would have helped the novel a lot in my opinion.

Relationships:

As I said earlier, I love a good steamy romance. In some ways, it worked, but in others I thought it could have been developed a little more. There's a big conflict of trust that prevents the characters from getting together right away, which I thought was a really good idea. However, in practice, I don't think it quite worked. Laurel's beef with Enzo is that he lied to her, but she's also actively hiding her elven heritage from him (which is another thing I don't totally understand seeing as they've had sex and I find it hard to believe he wouldn't have touched or noticed her ears, but I digress). So while I kind of understand not wanting to pursue a romantic relationship to some degree (Laurel claims his lie put her best friend in danger) showing so much hostility specifically because he lied when she's doing the same doesn't completely follow.

There was also a brief moment where it felt like a romantic rival was being introduced? But then nothing happened with it, which made it feel a little like a loose end that never got tied up.

Overall:

Overall, this wasn't my personal favorite. I feel like it has potential, but it needs a dedicated editor to work out more of the kinks. But, you may disagree and that's okay! If you want to check it out, it releases on KU August 1st.

As I started this book, the first thing I noticed was how witty it was, how fast the banter was. No, it's not a comedy, it actually started very dramatically with full on action but I found myself grinning through the dire situation precisely because of the wit and banter between Laurel and Cole. They are hired assassins you see, their contract was to eliminate a monstrous monstrosity, which was challenging to say the least. And, unfortunately, their target was someone that set them both in a panic at what the repercussions would be, it WAS considered treason to murder a guard... so our two hapless assassins flee. A cool and impressive start to a read, where I just had to know more about these 2!

The author didn't leave me hanging, within 2 chapters I knew who both were, a bit of their background and how fast their friendship was. As a new to me author, Ms Morgan has me hooked right from the onset, I was immediately immersed as I settled back to go on a journey with her and her characters. An amazing action filled read, with fabulous succinct descriptions, vividly paintings both this world and characters majestically. It's a wonderful complex story, intricate plot, gloriously storytelling and a pace that kept it's momentum throughout.

Laurel is a half elf, a "breed" that is earmarked for extermination as abominations, in fact, ALL creatures other than humans are safe and even they aren't under this repressive regime. Both Cole and Laurel have been hiding, both on the run, both incredibly loyal to one another, sticking together like glue. I loved Cole so much! Ever since he learnt Laurel's secret when they were children, he vowed to protect her and he's been with her ever since. His protectiveness is strong, his oath is strong, his character is strong. As for Laurel, geez, taken in by a kindly man as a child and forced to hide "those ears" for fear of death, yeah, not easy. But after their stint of assassinating the guard, they join the rebellion. I love the way the author set it up, the meet with a former lover, oh how I loved the whole Enzo thing! Laurel is so over Enzo, or so she thinks.

Their becoming part of the resistance, the suspicion, the action they encountered, and golly is there lots of action, all so very credible. This author's writing is very credible, almost intoxicating, so easy to follow while keeping the adrenaline at half mast constantly. Exceptional world building and magnificent penmanship! Going from reclusive to full on rebel mode, at first to safeguard themselves, takes a whole new meaning. The dedication to cause havoc with the resistance gets them into many a scary moment, where I was holding my breath until the end, at which point I was hanging on by a thread and with THAT cliffhanger, the thread snapped, me with it. All I could do was stare at the page in shock!

My goodness gracious glorious me! THAT was a book that gave me the full 9 yards of EVERYTHING! Action, fully fleshed characters, awesome storytelling, exceptional plot and world building, magnificent pacing, tender romance, fabulous self reflection, an all round unputdownable read!

📚 Book Review by R.M. Campbell 📚 Book: In the Cover of Darkness Author: Jozanne Morgan
Genre: Fantasy Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
#bookloungereviewteam

Laurel Gunderson, a halfling-elf with special powers and a price on her head, and her accomplice, Cole, are hired to assassinate a gront, which was a city guard, and if caught, the crime would be punishable by death. They soon find out that the gront they murdered was a member of Duke Silmer’s personal guard, and a crime of treason of the highest order. The two flee the city, and are soon recruited by Laurel’s ex-lover, Enzo, to join the outlawed resistance against the evil Eberlim in his rain of terror. The feelings between Enzo and Laurel reignite, despite the warning not to get involved by Cole. Laurel and Cole are trained in battle, and once their training is complete, they are initiated into the resistance and can begin their clandestine, dark missions to bring down Eberlim and return their beloved country, Axtria, back to a peaceful and a place of liberty.
I thought the book had a good story, with fascinating characters and a suspenseful plot. The characters were well-written, and the mood, although dark, proved to have witty, clever, and romantic elements that made the story more enjoyable. There were also some steamy scenes interspersed in the story, as well as some descriptions of brutal combat situations. The pace was a little slow at times, and I felt more action was warranted.

Not only does this book have an amazing fantasy world with such interesting characters, but we have a best friend who would literally die for the FMC and a second chance romance with a hero ex lover! 🤩

Laurel (FMC) is a halfling-elf who has to survive without people finding out what she is. Her best friend Cole is always at her side and will risk his life for her. I love this friendship duo so much! Cole was there when her father, Robert, was killed, and he had never left her side ever since. Laurel is such a strong FMC. She wants to keep everyone safe and doesn't think twice if help is needed.

Laurel and Enzo (hero ex lover) are so perfect together! This is the perfect second chance, slow burn romance. Throughout the book, you can sense the love they still have for each before they get back together. I love them!

Some of my other favorite characters are Luigi, Marge, Jack, and Robyn. I won't go in too much detail to avoid spoilers.

The world building is so captivating and interesting. The author wrote the story in such a way that I completely felt like a side character in this world. I enjoyed the different towns and all the different characters within.

Obviously, this book ends on a cliffhanger, and the last few pages had me at the edge of my seat! I can't wait to start in the Cruelty of Gold and find out what happens next 🫣

If you love fantasy with romance, action, and a variety of races/creatures, look no further! This is the perfect book to add to your TBR🙌

A fast based romantic fantasy read with action from the very start. Following the story of a half elf FMC Laurel and her best friend and brother figure Cole as they navigate a kingdom that would see her dead and do what they can to survive. When an unlikely figure Enzo from their past comes in to save them and brings them into the resistance with him. This book has all of the best tropes of training sequences, lots of tension between Laurel and Enzo and found family.

There was a great development of the cast of characters and slowly learning about their history’s and the bonds that form between them into a sort of family. I loved seeing Laurel fight her desire to be with Enzo and the slow burn between them. I also loved her relationship with each other the other characters and how they each influenced her training and development. The ending was quite a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to find out what they get up to in the next book! My rating 4.4/5 stars!

Thanks to the author and MTMC book tours for the gifted copy of this book! All opinions given are my own!

Uhm, I need the next book now please! This story revolves around Laurel, a half-elf forced to conceal her identity to avoid being enslaved. Then her ex, Enzo, finds Laurel and Cole after getting into some trouble to offer them a chance to join the resistance against the current ruler. With no other choice to be made, they agree to go with him and Laurel starts to wonder what true freedom would feel like for herself. As well as that her feelings for Enzo aren't as non-existent as she hoped.

Her relationship with her childhood best friend Cole was one of my favorites, especially since they were no hidden feelings between the two, especially considering they've practically grown up together. I also absolutely loved her relationship with Luigi (whom I wish I could hug tbh😭). With that said, Enzo? Sheesh, he's swoon worthy and an absolute sweetheart.

Laurels' character growth throughout the story was wonderful to watch and I cannot wait to see how the story progresses in the next one!

📕Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The adventure started with the front cover of this book - stunning! This book hurled me back to my childhood in so many ways, reintroducing me to magical fantasy lands, exquisite tree houses, halflings, genies, bonds made over Lobverin lockets and true friendship. This is an exciting dark quest for the right to survive and fight - against evil - in an uncertain fantasy land, whilst trying to cherish forever friendships and find true love along the way. I think I might have fallen in love with a certain character along the way!
The author strikes a superb balance of these childhood fantasy themes and finely mixes them with adult intrigue, the power of love and want, and the strong fight for survival - with a few nectroma silver tears and a little magic along the way.
Such an enchanting read! 🪄 🧝‍♀️ 🧞‍♀️

“If I die tonight, at least I’ll have died on the right side, fighting for those who couldn’t defend themselves.”

This story revolves around our FMC Laurel who is half elf. Unfortunately, the elves have all been wiped out by the current regime so she is forced to hide this part of herself for her safety. Laurel and her childhood friend Cole join the building resistance and work to do everything they can to eliminate the threats to their world. I loved that Laurel and Cole are able to just be male/female friends without any kind of romantic entanglement! That’s not to say this story doesn’t have romance though. There’s plenty of slow burn tension with Laurel’s ex, Enzo. This is a great story for those who love magic, assassins, going undercover, found family, and rebellions! Just watch out for the ending. It’s certainly not what you expect. 😉

I’m going to assume this was a book I got for free, as I really hope I didn’t pay good money for this. The plot is fine, not breaking the mould but it has its own twists but the writing just isn’t that good and the characters are bland.

There’s a love interest in this, Enzo I think, and all I know about them is they’re hot. The male bestie exists and the female lead is tormented. That’s all I’ve got after what 300 pages? The epilogue also didn’t help my opinion given a rather large cliffhanger ends the book (something that bugs me in and of itself) and the reaction to that in the sneak preview epilogue thing isn’t what you’d expect from these characters and their relationships.

It passed an afternoon though and I wasn’t bored so, yeah two stars but not a series I’m going to return to.

Jozanne Morgan’s In the Cover of Darkness is a gripping tale of love, resilience, and redemption set against the backdrop of a dark and treacherous world. The novel follows Marla, a woman whose life takes a harrowing turn, forcing her to confront her deepest fears while fighting for survival.

Morgan masterfully weaves suspense and emotion, keeping readers on edge with unexpected twists and heart-wrenching moments. Her characters are raw and compelling, making it impossible not to root for them as they navigate betrayal, loss, and the pursuit of justice.

With vivid storytelling and a powerful message of hope, In the Cover of Darkness is a must-read for fans of romantic suspense and psychological thrillers. It’s a novel that lingers in your mind long after you turn the last page.

Wow, this book was an absolute thrill! Jozanne Morgan wastes no time, plunging you directly into the action from the very first page and immediately hooking your attention. I completely fell in love with the characters. It was incredibly rewarding to witness Laurel's journey of growth and see her truly begin to embrace who she is as a half-breed elf surviving against all odds.

This story masterfully kept me on my toes; every chapter was unpredictable, and I genuinely never knew what was coming next. Be forewarned, though: it does end on a significant cliffhanger that will leave you desperate to immediately dive into the next book! If you love fast-paced fantasy with compelling character development and constant suspense, you need to pick this up.

‘In the Cover of Darkness’ is an absolutely riveting new fantasy series. I love the main character, the half Elf Laurel who has to keep herself hidden from everyone to ensure her safety. I love her friendship with Cole which is a true friendship with no hidden feelings or romance and that’s rare in a fantasy series. I love Laurel’s relationship with Enzo who is a complicated figure from her past.

This whole novel was a real page turner and that ending! Oh my gosh, I need book two asap because I have to know what happens!

I received a gifted copy of this novel. This review is my honest opinion and written voluntarily.

This book is beautifully written. It offers a breadth and depth of detail that really bring the book and the whole story to life. A fantasy book needs just that to be a truly beautiful read and this carries all the weight of its worth in gold- it’s masterful.
Throughout the read, I found myself so engrossed in their struggle, that I wanted to join the liberation and become part of their beautiful movement. Also, I love elves. Especially the Pat with strength and bravery to fight for themselves and others.
Honestly, a wonderful book and one that has made this author a go to author for me.

Really well done. This is the author’s first book and I’m impressed. There were scenes here that felt very JRR Tolkien, which you don’t get a lot of in the Romantasy corner of the fantasy section.

I loved Laurel the main character. She lives in a harsh world, and grows a lot in this book. The main crush, Enzo, I don’t feel super invested in, but I’d love to know his secrets. He’s got them for sure. Cole was kind of flat, just a loyal brother type. I really liked some of the supporting characters in the resistance.

The character had depth. The scenery and the world certainly had depth, and the plot wasn’t predictable. I look forward to reading the next installment.

Elves, magic and corruption! A lot of time was taken to develop the character and her current and past relationships. The author writes so that the reader grows with the main character as she discovers herself, her strengths and flaws and allows herself finally to relax enough to fall in love...at what cost though?
And talk about the biggest of cliffys! You can't leave me hanging like that 🤣 I really need part 2 asap because I need to know what happens! I really enjoyed this book, gripped me from the very beginning! One of those books that you end up resenting life for taking you away from it!

So the fantasy romance genre (Romantasy, I hear the cool kids are calling it) is a relatively new one to me. But if this book is anything to go by, I’m all for it. Reading the blurb and looking at the cover, I couldn’t wait to get stuck in and once I started, I was hooked. In many ways a classic romantic story, sort of star crossed lovers but with the added jeopardy of fighting with the resistance. This was engaging and gripping and I really hope this will be a series because I’m a fan! Highly recommended

When Jozanne Morgan put her idea onto paper, she created magic in the start of her series, ITCOD!

Through 38 chapters, you get pulled into the world of halfling-elf Laurel, the bond she shares with her childhood best friend Cole, the passionate relationship she rekindles with her love interest Enzo and her fierce drive to help the newly found resistance liberate the world of Axtria, a lifelong dream of hers.

ITCOD is utterly captivating.

Definitely could not put this book down and eagerly waiting for Laurel's story to continue in In The Cruelty Of Gold!

In The Cover of Darkness is an exciting read from beginning to end, with a unique take on the found family trope and commendable commitment to minority representation. Jozanne Morgan does a phenomenal job at building suspense, creating nail-biting tension between both events and characters that compels you to keep turning the page. Laurel’s identity and intimacy struggles are relatable, making it easier for readers to connect with her and root for her. Recommended for those who enjoy action, angst, and a bit of spiciness.

There is also a second chance romance in the form of her ex, Enzo. There are strong characters, lots of action and twists. I’ve fully fallen in love with these characters!
Each one brings so much depth and personality to the story.

This is one of the best depictions of the #foundfamily trope I’ve read. I want to be a part of this group! 🥹

I was hooked into this story from page one, literally! The pacing and writing kept me glued, and I caught myself thinking about these characters throughout my day.

The book surpassed my expectations with its captivating narrative following a half-Elf concealing her identity for safety. Readers will quickly identify with Laurel's journey of healing and self-discovery, making her a relatable protagonist.

Highlighting the genuine friendship between Laurel and Cole, the book offers a refreshing departure from romantic tropes. Exploration of Laurel's relationship with Enzo also adds depth and nuance. Masterful world-building immerses readers in Axtria's enchanting magic system and captivating lore, evoking even more wonder and intrigue. Beloved fantasy tropes like found family and assassins add yet another fun layer of complexity.

While it may not resonate with all readers, the strengths certainly lie in well-crafted characters, an incredibly immersive world, and an engaging plot. The story leaves a lasting impact and is certainly an enjoyable tale for any fans of enchanting adventures and compelling characters with seasoned storytelling.

A really enjoyable read! It kept me interested all the way through with interesting world building and a real classic fantasy feel to it. The descriptions and details were rich and gave an immersive feel to the story while still leaving enough mystery about this world to make you want to find out more.
I’m hoping we get to learn more about some of the different places in Axtria as well as more about Eberlim and his background in the next book. So far he has been a mysterious character in the background while his regime inflicts horrendous atrocities on any who are against him.

I felt this was a real character driven plot and really loved the range of characters. I loved the relationship and dynamics between Laurel and Cole. Their friendship is beautifully portrayed and I love their loyalty and love for each other. Enzo is a great character and I enjoyed seeing his connection with Laurel develop, despite the fact they are both keeping secrets from each other. Enzo definitely has an air of mystery about him and I’m hoping we get to learn more about his background in the next book. I loved the resistance characters and how they are from a multitude of different backgrounds. Luigi and Jack are firm favourites already but they are all characters I found myself rooting for.

Very much looking forward to book 2 after that interesting cliffhanger and eye opening epilogue!
Thank you to the author for the fantastic opportunity to read an advanced copy of her book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book didn’t quite get there for me. For a fantasy novel, I was expecting magic, sword fights and bits of weirdness thrown in like usual, but what I got was more of a love story, not quite my cup of tea, with all what I’ve previously said sewn around the edges. Take away the goo-goo eyes and the beating hearts and the (I know I shouldn’t) love scenes and we would have the potential to be a decent fantasy novel.
The lands of Axtria were cleansed, some years ago, of all beings other than humans but some, we are invited to think, did escape. Laurel is an Elf but it is a secret that she keeps to herself and her adopted brother Cole, not even her lover Ezra, knows and she keeps her pointed ears hidden in her hair, she also keeps her magical abilities deep ly hidden within her. They join the revolution to overthrow the king and so they get themselves into various skirmishes and stuff, these are the good bits.
I thought that the lovey- dovey stuff might fade out but they didn’t and I very nearly put the book down but the other stuff, which was quite good, helped me to read to the end. I’m sorry but I can only give it a mark of 3/5
