I have purchased all the current books available on caring for dahlias. While those books cover the basics, this book is the one I’ve been longing for. It is very detailed, with beautifully illustrated explanations of everything dahlia growers want to know. I love that the authors are not afraid to dive deep into the details when they think it’s important.
If that wasn’t enough, this includes growing tips from nine contributors around the world. The perspective of these growers is so helpful because, as the authors say in the introduction, “there is not one single way to grow dahlias.”
I predict this will become the new “bible” for dahlia growers everywhere. For me, it is already the go-to book for subjects like planting, watering, soil health, pests, disease, virus, digging and dividing tubers, tuber storage, making cuttings, and growing from seed.
As a huge bonus there is a chapter on dahlia culture that covers history, current organizations, how dahlia varieties are named and cataloged, the Dahlia Genome Project, the science behind dahlia color, and even a list of places to see dahlias as one travels the world.
Kristine Albrecht’s trove of online videos on all dahlia topics is perhaps the most brilliant addition to this hefty book. A reader can take a deep dive into a specific dahlia subject, like dividing tubers, and while reading the details, watch an instructional video from the same author that provides all the visual and audio cues we need to really "get it.”
One of the great joys of this book is that the authors include a healthy sprinkling of botanical sidebars throughout that give the reader insight into the inner workings of plants. Wonder what the difference between a monocot and a dicot is? It’s here. So is a brilliant explanation of seed banking and why dahlias are technically not flowers but instead are an inflorescence. I devoured this book once and have started back at the beginning to really soak it in a second time.
DAHLIAS: Seed to Bloom is nothing short of a gardening triumph from authors whose stature and trust in the dahlia community are sure to rise.
