This is the best anthology of short poems in English, containing almost no dogs, and most of the poems in it cannot be found in any of the standard anthologies.
It reflects the taste of one man, the poet, critic, and teacher Yvor Winters, refined over a lifetime devoted to poetry. Winters' taste is sometimes eccentric, but unlike that of the ordinary anthologist, always earned and genuine. The choices are mostly from the 16th, 17th, and 20th centuries; in Winters' view the 18th and 19th centuries, which many anthologists emphasize, were a trough for poetry in English, with a few exceptions.
This book was my bedside reading for about five years. If you study it it will change your view of poetry forever.
