My review: This book is for those of you that want to learn about how to you really sound. The author Dr. Fleming goes through the tone, pace, and pitch of our conversational voice. Through the use of her exercise and practice, you can slowly hone your voice to the kind of voice you want to present to the world.
What I remember (Spoilers): We are tone deaf to our own voice. We can't actually hear how our voice sounds like to other people without recording ourselves. The key is to have a friend have a conversation with you, and ask them to start recording with out you know when this will allow you to hear your default voice.
From there the book guides the user through the different standard issues people experience when speaking. For example, if you end your sentences with an upward inflection, it sounds like you are asking questions and are unsure of yourself. Through practice, you can learn to do a downward inflection, which will give what you say finality and confidence.
Reading this book showed me that I talk in a monotone. I also have a tendency to end with an upward inflection, giving my up my power can resolve.
Comments: I recommend the audiobook version, as you can hear the people go through the exercises, and the transformation when doing the exercises.
I also recommend Brett Manning (Singing Success) if you are looking to do more voice training.
Great. You'll be so aware of your own voice and others after reading this. Highly recommend for anyone looking to work on their voice. I recommend this every time someone asks about how to work on their voice.
Wow this is a great CD. I was never consciously aware of this but the sound of your voice says so much about you, it can convey confidence, conviction, passion and trustworthiness. The sound of your voice is as important as your dress and body language. Carol Flemming goes through a lot to improve our speaking she goes through accents, tonality, voice resonance, pausing, protecting your voice and many other things. You can get plenty of benefit from this just by listening but to really improve your voice you have to listen and make recordings of your own voice assess and make changes. I am in sales and am on the phone all day and using these techniques I have already seen a big improvement in the way people respond me and in my social life I am able get people to pay more attention to me. This a great CD for anyone involved in public speaking or singing or presenting or just talking in general so get it its worth your time.
Having read it quite a number of years ago, I remember thinking it was OK but not much else. Neither can I seem to be able to remember too many specifics about it. Obviously it wasn't awful, otherwise I would have remembered that, but neither was it good enough to burn a vivid image into my mind, so two stars is the most I can give it in hindsight.
Not bad! Dr Fleming definitely knows her stuff. I learned quite a few tips and techniques for getting the most out of my voice. My favorite part was learning about the "voice-image" who knew someone could pick up so much information about a person just by hearing their voice. I came away with a good amount of notes and cues in my speech patterns to fix. I definitely have some work to do !
A few years ago while I worked on my Master's program, I realized I wanted to improve the sound of my voice since I had to give so many presentations. This audio program was instrumental in helping me. I loved using it!
