Condé Benoist Pallen, Ph.D. (Saint Louis University, 1885; M.A., Georgetown University, 1883), was managing editor of the Catholic Encyclopedia from 1904 to 1920.
Its a mystery without any mystery. A haunted house in which the supernatural has no real impact and a romance which seems quite sexist. There's also some racism thrown in for good measure.
Its fairly short at least. The last 80 pages or so in which things turn into a second-rate detective novel is fairly compelling in a cozy-mystery sort of way.
Its not terribly written on a basic level, apart from the sexism, but the plotting is pretty bad. The little bit of sci-fi is interesting enough.
