“Leading readers almost painlessly through an extensive tour of modern China’s events and issues, this anthology is well planned and, with its extensive bibliographies at the end of each chapter, a useful guide to deeper study as well as a rich resource for acquainting readers with China.... a well woven and brightly colored tapestry creating a kaleidoscopic and vibrant picture of China.”―Mary Karen Solomon, Education About Asia
“A well-balanced overview.”― Future Survey
The fourth edition of Understanding Contemporary China has been thoroughly revised to reflect a half-decade of significant events and trends, both domestically and in the international arena. The result is an accessible, well-grounded exploration of the most crucial issues affecting China today.
The authors assume no prior knowledge on the part of the reader, making the book a perfect choice for interdisciplinary "Introduction to China" courses, as well as for courses in political science and sociology. Numerous maps and photographs enhance the text.
Written in a very casual tone which helps the reader to digest information. Covers a wide spate of topics from a very wide vareity of perspectives. A fairly good text book on a fairly interesting subject.
Despite the few informative and interesting chapters, many really dragged on. Writing style was lack luster, but it gained two stars because it still gave information that I did not know prior to reading.
