Brigid Donovan is divorced, adrift, and might be going nuts. Her desire to restore her family's decaying Victorian Mansion isn't going well. Mainly because her werewolf contractor is murdered on the job. And the only other choice to take over is the hot, if sketchy, cousin to the local coven's head witch.
On top of these problems, her fluffy Ragdoll cat is now speaking to her—that can't be normal, right? He tells her she's the great-granddaughter of a fae lord, and very powerful. That's all fine and dandy, but where is her magic?
Her search leads her to discover that her magic was taken from her at an early age and splintered into thirteen pieces of jewelry that she must find, reintegrate, and learn to use all before the local witch coven finds it first—and they play for keeps.
Luckily, she has a best friend, a Splintercat, a griffin, a teenaged dragon, and an angry werewolf pack to help. Everything should go smoothly...shouldn't it?
Jilleen Dolbeare is the author of the Shadow Winged Chronicles, an urban fantasy series about a shape-shifting bush pilot in Alaska.
She loves riding horses, warm ocean beaches, and long walks in the mountains, none of which she can do in the Arctic, so she writes.
Her activities are riding her four-wheeler on cold ocean beaches (often frozen or covered with ice), and long walks to and from work when it’s 40 below—in the dark. She does keep her stakes sharp for those vamps that show up during the 67 days of night.
Jilleen lives with her husband and two hungry cats in Barrow, Alaska where she also discovered her love and admiration of the Inupiaq people and their folklore.
I'm putting this series up towards the top of my "favorite urban fantasy series ever" list. it has everything I love about urban fantasy and fantasy books in general. Great story telling, unique characters and fantastic world building. I loved it.
Splintered Magic Book 1 Brigid's divorce is finally done and there is enough of the renovation completed that she can move in while the rest is completed. She almost misses the turn in the pouring rain, but manages to make it and not lose the trailer she's hauling.
Once she verifies her room is set up, the kitchen is done and also a bathroom, she unloads the trailer. It's as she's getting the last box that she sees the large gray cat sitting by the door. He's a beautiful cat with light creamy fur, blue-grey points, and gorgeous periwinkle eyes. He reminds her of her childhood cat and she decides that one had gotten around.
Her contractor Craig Whelan arrives with his wife Anna and a few supplies, including cat food. He explains he didn't want to take the cat to a shelter in case she wanted to keep him. Of course, she wants to keep the cat and he is very important to this series.
She has to go to town to get groceries and return the trailer but first she wants to see what furniture she has in the attic space. While she's there she finds a bracelet that starts some changes.
Of course, the talking cat is just the beginning, and of course she thinks she's having some sort of breakdown, so she schedules a doctor's appointment. It's her we meet her high school boyfriend, and I think he will become her current love interest.
Gabriel 'Gabe' Ambrose is the town physician and he'll be the one to explain at least some of the goings on.
I love Mr. Mittens her splintercat, and there are many things that will be life changing that happen in this book.
I laughed, cried, held my breath and more as I read this first journey that ends in a cliffhanger. Fortunately, I have the Splintered Magic Omnibus, so I can just continue reading.
Splintered Veil - Book 2 In the first book we learn of the witch's intent lead by Sofia. Her cousin who had been renovating Brigid's home found two of her artifacts and given them to Sofia. Brigid was able to retrieve one of them, but Sophia had held on to the diamond containing the ice magic. As this book opens, she is missing the magic of air, aether, reality, time and the ice which Sophia stole.
Gabe has been captured, and Brigid is recovering from the injuries sustained in the trap set by Sophia. Her best friend Megan is on her way to her support she desperately needs.
When she arrives, the relief of her presence brings Brigid to tears, but once they dissipate, she knows she has to convince Megan of the reality of magic. The pendant she prepared would help with that, but she has to infuse it with the ability to hear Mr. Mittens. In the meantime, Mr. Mittens has charmed Megan behaving like a normal housecat.
The first thing is to find Gabe, Brigid calls the clinic and finds he is there and after some consideration decides to go to his house after work. Gabe has been spelled not to remember her, but he's fighting it. Now Brigid needs higher help, she needs to contact her fae great grandfather, learn how to fix Gabe, and learn to use her magic.
The help she gets is in the form of a Kelpie named Dana. A stern taskmaster, but one that does help.
The plan to rescue Gabe is almost thwarted when both he and Megan, the wolf watching over him are encased in ice by Sofia, a true test of the Whelan's trust in her and her ability to control her magic.
There are many twists and turns in this one, and the ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, but also a very interesting one.
Splintered Fate - Book 3 In the previous book, Brigid finds most of her missing magic. The only things left are air and of course the ice Sofia stole from her. She also gained a new resident of her forest lands, a dragon named Goch has now obtained sanctuary from Brigid. With her new knowledge of her magic she was able to defeat the witches, but in the process, she has transported Mr. Mittens, Megan, Sofia and herself to Fairie. Sofia runs and the rest of them do as well. Unfortunately, they run out of forest and are surrounded.
This book opens as they are forced down the hill by Centaurs to the castle of the High King. Only slightly reassured by Mr. Mittens, that the High King does indeed know her great grandfather.
While they are being paraded to the castle Brigid is worrying about those left behind and also what havoc Sofia could cause here. Mr. Mittens shrinks to his ragdoll form as they enter the castle and staying very close to her. He seemed afraid.
Once at her grandfather's Keep, Brigid explains the circumstances that brought them here. The situation with the King is a delicate one for her grandfather.
It seems the King is looking for a consort, one with magic worthy to be Queen. His choice of course is Brigid. Even though it seems Sofia has found a way to throw her hat into that ring.
Queen lessons for Brigid, magic lessons, plotting to find an assassin, are just a few things in this book that will keep you turning the pages.
We also learn much about Mr. Mittens' background, and Dana her grandfather's mistress of Magics as well. There is also a most unexpected ending.
I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
I have to admit I started skimming at the end to avoid it, but then the 'cat' finds tracks of a witch in the woods around the house and says it's suspicious. Then the fmc explains it away with 'Maybe a witch was hiking.'
This was a truly joyful read, not joyful in the hahaha sense but joyful in the uniqueness of the story. From the fact that Brigid is a full grown divorcee, who's pain of how her ex betrayed her, to returning to her childhood home, to rekindling a...a something with a past sweetheart, to witches and shifters and a magic system to die for! Oh and there's Elves.... and there's Mr Mittens, yeah, a whole lot of wonderful that casts a spell on you, a spell that you HAVE to read the next, and the next and the next....
A strong female MC is always great to see and although not Brigid is strong, she's trusting and fallible, which only makes the read more credible. The fact she has no idea that she is in fact not an ordinary human and the unravelling of the why and the how, had me on the edge of my seat! There are tender moments, there are humourous moments, there is tension, drama and pulse racing action! The author's ability to draw one in is without doubt a super power! A highly recommended series, read it to experience it all first hand, you'll thank me later....
Follow along as Brigid discovers magic with the help of her cat and friends. Lovely happy ending (although I wouldn't mind reading more adventures with these characters).
I do love a new midlife start. After all, a protagonist should be stationed enough to make bold new mistakes, instead of the same old mistakes any ingenue can be relied on to make.
Brigit knows what she wants, has the resources and the will to make it happen, in addition to the experience to recognise when she is being manipulated - whether by the bad guys or her feline protector. She even uses the skills she learned from a former, abusive, relationship to navigate her new reality in a healthy way.
Oh yeah, and there's also lots of action, snark and humor, along with a sweet slow romance, and a sprinkling of Monty Python quotes.
A fun and enjoyable series with a cool ‘cat creature’ aka Mr. Mittens. Interesting (paranormal) characters and there’s also other realms which I am sure will be explored later. What else is the purpose of a realm walker?
The fmc sometimes acts and thinks like a 20-something, and is pretty naive, even though she is 42. Maybe it’s because how she was treated by her controlling ex, but I do hope she can develop herself more. Will she also find out more about the death of her parents? (Or grandparents, can’t remember, oops)
I was attracted to this series because the cover featured a cat (and I had read a short story by the author about a young wizard and his magpie familiar). This trilogy did not disappoint; a magical wood, spelled jewels, a visit to the Fae realm, and a rekindled romance! Interesting and endearing relationship between the splintercat and his “pet”.
Brigid has returned to her old home after a not so fun divorce, and that's where the fun starts. She discovers she is Fae and that the witches in her old home town want to steal her power to keep themselves charged up. This is a great series so far. I enjoyed all the characters, good and evil, and there is plenty of action and humor in it to keep your interest. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series to catch up with Brigid and her friends.
Really enjoying this series. Read the first three in a day! Love that Brigid is not a twenty something loosy goosy but a mature woman who has some spunk. And I like that Gabe is somewhat shy but still sexy in his own way. This is a nice change from massive spice books. There’s more adventure than spice and the adventure is fun with lots of unique characters. Looking forward to the next three books!
When you like urban fantasy with a down to earth female character that just came out of a divorse being mentally abused and tries to get her life back while finding out she is part fae and has the magic to be returned, read this book! It is fun, has enough creatures to be amazed and gets help from her bff and a cat. A splintercat. What that is, read it yourself.
I really did enjoy these books. The story kept me interested and entertained. I did like that our heroine had to learn about her magic, so many characters just seems to be an instant practitioner as soon as they have their power. Looking forward to the next one.
The characters are well developed and the storyline is meaty enough with great humor throughout. I would have given a higher rating, except for the continued error of using the word 'too' instead of 'to'. If you can't replace it with 'also', don't double the 'o'. I will definitely watch for more books by this author, with fingers crossed.
I really like this series and was just starting book five. The next day I was looking for something in my kindle app when I accidentally touched a different book, it came up and the last three books in the series disappeared. I can’t find them anywhere on the app. I really hate to have to buy them again.
Brow beaten divorcee Brigid returns to her family home for a new start with the house in disrepair from previous owners outside of the family. Why has no one else found the door to the attic and other hallucinations send Brigid to the Drs. There starts a journey of discovery not just in her back garden but in other realms.
I do hope Julleen has written quite a few books as I've enjoyed these as much if not more than any others I have read in this genre. If you like middle aged heroines finding their feet after a messy divorce, magic, evil and romance then I highly recommend these books . Now off to read the next in the Splinter Magic series.
I cried when there were sad parts, laughed and giggled! Sat up tensed and plotted and agreed with plots! Even learned along! God just read the series! It's that great!
I love another strong woman kicking arse and finding her magic either real or not lol.. Plenty of magic romance and action for all ages. Fun to read love a good story when you can’t put it down 😉.
The 1st book seems like it might have been a first attempt at writing. Each successive book improved and flowed more smoothly. Well done! I enjoyed the characters and the storyline. Lots of exciting happenings and good relationships. Well worth the read!
It's an easy read that is hard to put down. Once I started reading it I enjoyed learning about Splinter cats and far and witch magic. It is written in such a way that you can imagine being there.
What a lighthearted fun read. The characters were well thought out and a delight to know. The storyline is strong and flows beautifully. I would definitely like more in this series
These books were fun to read, with interesting characters and concepts. I enjoyed the way the author kept the nonhuman characters true to their types in action and speecnh, especially the Splintercat himself.
Loved this series!!! So many twists and turns and feel goods and funnies. A few grammar errors but those will hopefully be better in the subsequent books.
I enjoyed the characters in this one because they were deliciously well flushed out. The plot was fresh and complicated enough that it was not something easily guessed about.
The 3 books had me completely captivated . So much angles to get around before the character could find her happiness. I just wish it had gotten a little deeper with the love interests .
There were times when I simply could not book the book down. The characters and their adventures will hold you till the last page. I also loved the personal growth of the main protagonist. And for once the romance is not over done.
Very enjoyable read that had so many twists and turns. Taking in different realms and magical creatures. I was a bit surprised at how the witch was portrayed though. I’ve purchased the next in the series too.
Exiting fast paced set of books. Magic and mayhem, battles, and magical creatures. Just a dash of romance. A very entertaining set of books. Never a dull moment. I enjoyed the first three books in this series look forward to next ones.
