John Owen was an English theologian and "was without doubt not only the greatest theologian of the English Puritan movement but also one of the greatest European Reformed theologians of his day, and quite possibly possessed the finest theological mind that England ever produced" ("Owen, John", in Biographical Dictionary of Evangelicals, p. 494)
Chose this for my Christmas devotional reading, and the material snuck into my preaching during the whole month of December.
Really enjoyed it. Beautiful reflections on the person and work of Christ, intriguing suggestions on more technical theological matters (though not very many), and searing applications of the truth to practical life. I teared up more than once and would gladly read it again.
