Tales of Lilleforth #2

The Stablemaster's Heart

Rate this book
Mother Jones has spent his life working hard, running the royal stables at Lilleforth, and watching on fondly as those around him fall in love and lust.

But nobody, man or woman, has ever stoked that fire for him—right until the new royal groom barrels into his life. Vasily is all sunshine smiles, golden hair and laughter. For the first time, Mother finds himself attracted to someone, and he can’t help wondering what it might be like to court—and bed—his handsome new groom.
But Mother is over thirty, rough around the edges, and hardly a catch.

Vasily couldn’t possibly return his affections—could he?

Vasily Petrov, the fourth son of the king of Koroslova, is travelling incognito for a year. In Koroslova the old ways are the only ways, and a man being attracted to another man is unthinkable—especially if you're a prince. But in Lilleforth, Vasily has the chance to spread his wings and explore the side of himself that he can no longer deny, and he intends to make the most of it.

Except, he’s falling for his stablemaster—and worse, Mother doesn’t know he’s a prince, and Vasily doesn’t know how to tell him. And the longer he waits, the more he fears losing what they have when the truth comes out.

This was not the plan.

I had a good time with the first book so I was happy to volunteer for a review of the sequel!

Overall it was not a bad book but it was ruined by one detail: the name of Mother.

So, I knew going in that one of the MC name was Mother Jones but I assumed once we’d learned his real name the author would stop using Mother, especially for the scenes with Vas. No, it was used continuously until the end (and I think it was even overused instead of “him” many times) Why did I care? Because it was used even during their bedroom’s scenes. So imagine reading stuff like “and he took Mother’s c*ck in his mouth” I don’t know about you but it was a BIG mood killer for me. I had to skim read all their bedroom scenes (and there were a lot) which was really a shame. It really killed the book for me. I could have gone behind another unusual name but Mother felt too weird to me in the context.

Oh and I couldn’t get behind the constant use of the word “lad” by Mother, when talking to Vas (even when they were a couple). It felt like a modern “bro”, it was cringey to read.

I did like having some demisexual rep (especially in an historical story) and I loved seeing Felix and Leo being faithful to themselves. And I appreciated that the author didn’t go with the cliché choice regarding their sex life.

There was no crazy kidnapping scheme in this one but I admit I got bored at one point and it took me far longer than usual to get through it. I think the issue with the name really took me out of the story and I couldn’t focus and appreciate the story.

It might be for you if you can get past this but beware that you’ll get A LOT of sex scenes with the name Mother being used.

Thanks to GRR for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

A Joyfully Jay review.

The Stablemaster’s Heart is the second book in Sarah Honey’s Tales of Lilleforth series. Mother Jones returns in his role as a stablemaster and is one of the main characters in this book alongside Vasily. Interestingly, the setting is largely the same as book one. That is to say, the bulk of the action takes place in the stables of Lilleforth. Even though this is the second book in the series, I think it could stand reasonably well enough as a standalone if you don’t mind frequent, albeit small, cameos from Leo and Felix who starred in the first book. Overall, the story has a great, solid romance that is bolstered by having at least one of the MCs introduced in the first book. Mother and Vasily slowly realize they are attracted to each other well before they admit it, then mutual inexperience for various reasons leads them on a long, slow, and achingly hot exploration of their newfound intimacy.

Lovely demisexual awakening and sexual exploration

Vasily, 22, is a prince of Koroslova, where homosexuality is perhaps not quite outlawed but at the very least frowned upon. His father is oblivious to Vasily's preferences, but his mother is more attentive and has arranged for him to travel to Lilleforth, where the King has recently married a man, so he can work as the royal groom and experience life without the constraints of his title or country.

Mother (yes, that really is his name), 35, is the stablemaster. Though he sometimes wishes for someone to come home to at night, for companionship, he's never felt real attraction towards anyone and has resigned himself to a lonely life. Over the weeks that Vasily spends working in the stables though, Mother is surprised to find a burgeoning attraction building for the lad.

This was such a sweet and soft story. The characters share so many quiet moments and it's domestic, friendly and caring. I thought the development of their relationship was so lovely, and that the pacing of it was pretty good. The demisexual awakening didn't seem rushed to me, and I liked that both characters were equally inexperienced in spite of the age gap so they were on really even footing. And when it did come to sex, I loved that the author reversed the expected top/bottom roles.

Outside of Vasily's secret identity, their communication was really good. They're both a bit shy and nervous but don't let that get in the way of asking for what they want.

I found this quite well written overall and the story flows nicely, though a couple of the plot elements were a bit heavy handed. The metaphorical gun is planted and commented on a couple times before the climax so I had a good idea of where this was going.

I liked the outcome of the resolution, but thought it was a bit too quick and easy, which is the main reason this is "only" a 4-star book for me.

Some people seem to have been bothered by the name Mother but I can't say I even noticed it. Perhaps if you've actually called your mum "Mother" it will be an issue, but maybe I'm also just good at zoning out names - I write them all down, but frequently start writing a review only to find I cannot remember the character's names, and that's not the writer's fault, they just slip out of my brain.

All in all, a very enjoyable story if you're in the mood for a light read, with good demisexual rep and limited angst.

I kindly received an ARC from the author. All opinions are my own.

Vasily Petrov, the fourth son of the royal family of the kingdom of Koroslova, has a year off. He will work in a new position as royal groom to King Leopold of Lilleforth. He can explore his feelings for men, something unthinkable in Koroslova’s Kingdom. King Leopold is in a relationship with Felix, the former groom. So Prince Vasily can explore, incognito as groom.

Well, he doesn’t have to look far, the love of his life is just in front of him, his stablemaster.

Stablemaster Mother Jones, who’s a hard worker, has never fallen in love or had romantic feelings for anyone, until Vasil. Not right away, first there was a friendship, that got deeper, and then his body reacts to Vasil, he feels desire. He officially wants to court Vasil. Vasil is head over heels.

“You’re it for me, lad,”

Something sweet, sexy, and soul-deep is blooming between them. It’s really a sight to the eye, both inexperienced and exploring their affection for each other and bodily pleasures.
Gosh, watch them, there’s so much to enjoy.
There’s still an object standing in the way… Vasil is a Prince, and Mother/Bryn doesn’t know.

Mother/Bryn and Vasil are two extremely lovable personalities. They are both soft-hearted, sweet, emotional, affectionate, funny and so fond of each other.

The writing was so good, there was a soft, kind environment designed, and the atmosphere was warm, friendly, and ditto with all the characters. It felt so comfortable and enjoyable.
Overall a solid and lovely story that deserves all the five stars.

These books are just so much fun...

I don't think I quite liked this book as much as the 1st, but there were definitely parts that had me kicking my feet at the cuteness. This couple was super stable and wholesome. I loved their awkward flirting in the beginning and I really liked how sure they were of each other. I also really liked the demisexual rep with Mother.

My only real criticism of this was around the 30%-50% mark. I don't know what it was, but when they just got together, their age difference made me feel kinda weird (even though there was also an age gap in the 1st book and that didn't bother me at all). I think its because Vasily felt a bit too innocent and puppy-like at times, while Mother kept calling Vasily "lad" even after they got together. I almost put the book down because of this.

Luckily, the weirdness kinda went away after the 50%, after Vasily gained some experience and seemed like an actual adult (rather than the child who couldn't even boil water at the beginning).

This was one of my rare visits to this sub-genre of m/m romance. It may also exist in m/f romance. I have no idea.

The sub-genre is kinda "lazy fairytale" (so lazy).

You know how fairytales go (or at leas they did when I was a kid) "once upon a time there was a king, and....". Fairytales tend to be short, and about 1 thing, like Cindarella, so you don't really need to know, say, the name of the country. Just a particular family, a prince (so presumably a king, palace etc). Because the fairytales were originally from a couple of philologists who toured Germany in the early 1800s and used locals telling folktales to collect examples of language, the stories are kind of old fashioned and European. They include things like: "there was a fairy who then...." or, "then a giant..."

I'm deducing that many authors grew up reading fairy tales. Ever since I can remember, innumerable authors have dipped into the fairytale ?lifeworld? to tell stories. One of my favourites is Once on a Time.

Some romance authors are doing the same. Clearly.

So: in this one the countries have names. They are all kind of default-analogue-Europe. One of them is kinda default-analogue-Russia. The advantage of writing in this subgenre is that you don't have to give a stuff about any actual world building. Or bear in mind how anything actually works. For instance one of the MCs (a prince) has Pasha as a middle name.

So you have kings, queens, princes, a couple of countries that have names, a palace and a stable. Also an "infirmary" a healer and a bishop. Bishop of what? Who knows. I think the King has meetings with ?a council? People definitely ride horses. They are near/next to? a town/city thing? There is a sea?

Those of us who read fantasy and have been doing so for (oh god) 50 years are going to find this all a bit weird. The world-building is probably is within the comfort zone of German peasants in 1805, except for the whole m/m thing. (gay German peasants in 1805?)

It's a bit odd referring to it as part of the "lazy fairytale sub-genre" because there is no magic in this story at all. Just princes and kings.

All in all, this is not my genre, unless an author writes incredibly engrossing characters. Not so here. They were all right.

Lovely fantasy romance. Princes, Knights, stablemasters and royal grooms. If you like any of these then you'll certainly want to try this series. I loved the first book in the series and this is just as good.
A prince working as the Royal groom in a neighbouring land. A demisexual stablemaster. An age gap. Felix and Leo from book 1. So much to like. It's quite high heat, but Vasily is an innocent (all male relationships are banned in his country) and Mother has never been attracted to anyone before Vasily, so there's a lot of exploration.
Highly recommended.

Truth be told, Mother was looking forward to having an extra pair of hands about the place. He just hoped that this groom lasted longer than the last one and didn’t go running off and falling in love.

Oh, Mother Jones. Didn't know what was coming, did he? <3 I adore this fluff fantasy world by Sarah Honey. The premise for this one is cute, and Vasily is an easy character to like. I especially appreciated the cameos of Leo and Felix from book 1 - I almost wish I'd reread their book prior to this one! But I'll save that for my next fluff fantasy fix...

I appreciate that once it was clear there was something between them, Mother That kind of unnecessary drama would've dragged down the read for me!

Vasily ducked his head and gave Mother a reluctant smile, looking up from under his lashes, his cheeks pink. “Flattery will get you everywhere.”

Deliciously spicy but still so wholesome, this book gave me all the sweet sweet feels. I'll more than likely pick it up for a reread someday!

I adored this one better than the first book, The King's Delight.

There's a gentleness in Mother Jones and Vasily Anatoly Alexei Pasha Petrov's relationship. Vasily, the fourth son of the King of Koroslova hasn't been with a lot of men (in his country, relationships between men is basically forbidden). Mother Jones, the stablemaster of Lilleforth, doesn't have a lot of relationship as well because he has never gets the urge for it.

So when these two find each other, there was courting, learning, and like I said, gentleness. Even when Mother found out the truth about Vasily's identity as prince - the arguments felt necessary, and the apology afterwards was lovely.

So yes, I loved this one better (the sex scenes didn't feel gratuitous) and it was fun reading updates on Leo and Felix. ALSO, Vasily's mother, Queen Irina, was DA BOMB!

I can't. I'm sorry, but I cannot.

The story itself, from what I was able to read without my brain going Zzzt every third or fourth paragraph, was nice.

But, wHy would you name your protag, MOTHER!?
Then give him a secret actual name which only four people know but there's no explanation for why only four people know, or why it's so necessary for it to remain a secret, (or private and speshul), or why they can't just switch to calling him that name but everyone just calls him Mother? And it's as though towards the end, the usage increases in intensity? Which, *shudders*.

Okay. Perhaps it's an inside joke - I certainly am not on the inside so I wouldn't know - but, good christ, could the author not have switched to referring to him by his secret name during the more intimate scenes?

When my German BiL first watched Star Wars and the reveal shocked practically everyone, him and his brother were sitting there yelling HE WENT AROUND ANNOUNCING HIMSELF AS THE DARK FATHER WHY IS THIS SURPRISING!? I now understand their pain. Deeply.

Speed read it, and then sped it up even more because no. If others can get past the name, good for you and I hope you enjoy the story.
I could not and so I didn't.

4.5 stars, rounding up.

I'm rounding up, because I guess the name Mother didn't bug me that much. It just sort of . . . became a name for me. I've never actually called my own mom "Mother" and it just . . . didn't cause me any grief.

What did cause me grief was knowing that the secret had to be revealed and there would be pain . . . but it was totally understandable why the secret had to be kept, so I couldn't even be that mad at anyone.

The demi rep in this was quite lovely. I'd argue that both of our MCs are a bit demisexual (well, Mother is a lot a bit demi), and watching them quickly become of the best of friends was delicious. I was like, "Oh, yeah, you dummies are about to have so many confusing feelings!"

Basically, I just loved their love, how considerate they were of each other, how Vasily didn't think he deserved Mother (aka , bc he shared his intended name with the man he loved). This book did a great job of showing us how their connection sparked and grew, which was great to see.

So, even tho I took a completely understandable pause for the crushing blow I knew was coming, when I picked the book back up to soldier through, I was completely blindsided by the second punch the book dealt. But it was so effective, and I did cry.

In addition to a lovely romance, this book is also a bit about finding out how you can be your best when the expectations placed on you are taken away. (And I loved that )

I liked this book even more than book one, and I was glad to get some glimpses of Felix and Leo in this installment.

I received an advanced copy from Gay Romance Reviews.

Not going to lie, I didn’t like the name and would have preferred very much to have been any other thing.

It’s a sweet romance with demi sexual awakening. Some of the plot it’s quite predictable and resolution a bit too easy but it’s still very cute.

Me molto happy.

This review and much more can be found at Love Bytes Reviews

Vasily is the fourth son of a king – so he doesn’t exactly have a prominent role in his country’s business. Also, in his country, Koroslova, it’s not possible to be with another man. He really wants to travel the world and see what else might be out there for him. So his mother arranges for him to be able to travel incognito for a year. He’s got a job lined up as a groom in Lilleforth, a country that has a Prince married to a Prince Consort 🙂 Vasily has always spent more of his time with horses than with his family and he can’t wait.

Mother Jones has run the royal stables in Lilleforth for some time. He’s content with his job and if he hasn’t found anybody yet that he’s really wanted more with, well so be it. He’s got a good life. But then this beautiful new groom shows up. And he’s smitten. He’s sweet and funny and gorgeous. The fact that he seems to have no idea how to take care of himself is also a surprising turn on. So Mother takes Vasily under his wing and teaches him the basics of well, everything.

When Vasily confesses that he’s not interested in young women after Mother practically has to shoo them away from Vasily, Mother is surprised. And a little pleased if he’s honest. Could there maybe be more between them? He offers to help Vasily work on his “game” so that he can maybe find someone to date. Turns out Vasily is pretty bad at it. But he soon realizes that he’s not interested in some other young man. He’s interested in Mother. When he finally works up his courage to confirm this to Mother, well Mother is just grateful, because he has fallen under the spell of the beautiful younger man as well.

Some have been sworn to secrecy about Vasily’s true identity. When it seems clear that he and Mother are more than friends, it’s clear that he is going to have to let Mother in on the ruse if they are to have any sort of future. Can Mother accept that the man he is falling in love with is not a groom, but instead a Prince? How could that work? He’s sure he won’t be enough for someone like Vasily, even if they are in love. Luckily for Mother and Vasily, if they can be patient, things might just work out 😉

Well this was a completely adorable story. Vasily and Mother are both such sweet men. They are good at their jobs and Vasily certainly doesn’t want to be a Prince. He’s been happier in Lilleforth as a groom that he certainly ever was as a Prince. Mother is so happy to finally find someone who makes him feel more than friendship. Vasily wanted to explore and find happiness and his love is right in front of him 🙂 His attempts at flirting were hilarious! Mother was such a good sport working with him and then falling for him. Their relationship just really developed very organically as they worked together and became friends and then lovers. And of course we get to see the entirely supportive and hilarious Leo and Felix from the first book enjoying their married life and helping Mother and Vasily 😀 It’s a low angst, age-gap, secret identity story with some smart and cunning supporting characters who help our heroes get their happily ever-after. Definitely recommended.

Prince in disguise falls for stable master! Sweet sexy shenanigans ensue!

This little fairy-tale-style gem warmed my heart and had me flipping pages faster than you can say Mother Jones may I. Yes, one hero is named Mother Jones, but there’s nothing weird about it, that’s just the stablemaster’s name. It’s new groom Vasily who has a secret, and also seems to hold the secret to Mother’s heart. But working incognito in the stables is gonna get complicated fast for this virginal prince who just wants to explore the world outside of his unaccepting kingdom.

Two more lovely heroes would be hard to find, although if you’ve read the first book in this series, The King’s Delight (different heroes), you’ve already met two wonderful men and know this fabulous fairy-tale world. Vasily’s kind nature and way with horses have made him a terrific stable hand, but his privileged upbringing in the palace has left him helpless with things such as…cooking! Cleaning! Washing clothes! And he needs some help figuring out how to be independent in his little cottage by the stables. Who better to help than his boss, the kindhearted Mother Jones?

Watching these two get to know and respect each other is so fun, but seeing Vasily’s bumbling efforts to learn to court a man and having Mother offer himself up as tribute for practice—nothing funny, just communicating!—was utterly adorable. Mother has never been interested in anyone romantically, but as he gets to know Vasily, things begin to change, and it becomes clear that he’s probably demi and is finally falling for a person who complements him so beautifully in every way.

But Vasily’s hiding who he is, and he’s staying for only a year. And Mother Jones has zero interest in royalty and pomp and circumstance. Is it a match made in heavenly stables, or a heartbreak waiting to explode in their faces?

Well, it’s just an utterly wonderful read, so, dive in and enjoy!

The setting feels Medieval fairy tale, secondary characters are well-drawn and add richness to the story (including the previous book’s very much still bonkers-in-love heroes), and Vasily’s family wind up being terrific too, despite his kingdom’s backward attitudes.

HEA, prince in disguise, royalty-commoner, demi hero, virgin hero(es? I think!), no cheating or emotional cheating. Delightful! Highly recommended.

Ready to binge-read Sarah Honey's work. Next up is her Tales of Lilleforth series. The second novel is "The Stablemaster's Heart."
["Mother Jones has spent his life working hard, running the royal stables at Lilleforth, and watching on fondly as those around him fall in love and lust.

This was not the plan."]

All of the "at least no one else is falling in love" and "sick of royalty in my stables." All of Felix being horrible at keeping secrets (and Leo reminding him). All of the soft touches and warm glances and trusting moments. All of the traditions and routines and love.

This book was so very cute. They were both shy and tentative and unsure. Neither of them have been in love before, or in lust. They had so many firsts together, and it was beautiful.

I wish there was more to this series (but hey, Sarah Honey and Lisa Henry have a few books together about princes I think).

Mother & Vasily’s story was absolutely delightful! Who doesn’t love a thirty-five year old stablemaster who’s spent his life believing love isn’t in the cards for him discovering nothing could be further from the truth? All because of the king’s new groom who has come to work in Mother’s stables. And if that new groom happens to be a prince in disguise, even better!

Mother Jones is the levelheaded stablemaster for the King of Lilleforth, a guy who seems content with the life he’s made for himself, if maybe a bit envious of those around him who’ve found love. He’s long made peace with the fact that type of connection isn’t for him, because he’s never felt that attraction or spark for anyone.

Vasily Petrov, the fourth son of the royal family of Koroslova, is Mother’s opposite in many ways. He’s less than content with his lot in life, and his distance from throne makes all the royal duties and fuss seem unnecessary. He longs for a simpler life, one where he can be his true self and explore his attraction to men. When his family agrees to send him to Lilleforth for a year, it seems as if his prayers have been answered.

Overall this is a light, low angst, but high stakes fantasy. The age gap between Mother and Vasily is acknowledged, but their inexperience with relationships levels the playing field quite a bit. Their connection feels easy and natural, with a thread of tension from wondering if Vasily’s secret will destroy everything building between them.

Vasily’s desire to escape his father’s kingdom out of fear of persecution brings with it shades of homophobia. I was generally disappointed the king had to be manipulated into giving his son the room he needed to be himself, but reforming his stance on same sex relationships may have been unrealistic for his character.

I very much enjoyed Mother’s demisexual awakening; it’s one of the highlights of this story. Seeing him experience attraction with such wonder and awe, but also a bit panic, is all too real, and I appreciated the care Sarah Honey takes in bring each revelation to light.

The Stablemaster's Heart by @sarahhoneywriting is finally here, and you guys aren't ready for the cuteness that is Mother and Vasily! They're just a couple of idiots in love, and they'll make you giggle and sigh.
👑
Mother Jones is the stablemaster of the Lilleforth's royal stables. He works hard and is content to be alone. That is until a new royal groom shows up, and Mother can't help but wonder what it'd be like to have someone of his own. Vasily is the 4th son of the king of Koroslova, and he's traveling in secret for a year. Vasily hopes his time in Lilleforth will give him a chance to explore parts of himself that are forbidden at home. The two begin to fall for each other more and more, but the truth could be disastrous for them both.
🐎
These two cuties were a blast to read. Mother is steadfast and tough but cares about his people. A trustworthy and comfortable sort of guy that's so funny when he starts to flirt and joke. I love how his mouth sometimes runs off before his brain realizes what he's said. He's pretty cheeky when he gets the chance. Vasily is soft and sweet, incredibly naive but very hardworking and eager. He smiles easily and is ridiculously charming purely by accident. It's just how he is. From the roast egg betrayal to the wonder on his face when he realizes he can just *be*. It's a joy to see. Some of the things he says are just too cute. "But I've never spooned anyone before. I haven't, um, dabbled in cutlery at all, really." Oh boy lol.
🥚
As with the first book, the side characters really helped the story come to life. I loved Leo and Felix popping in, Queen Irina is the best and is smooth as fůcķ. This story is really just a good slice of life romp with exploration, low stakes, sexual awakenings, and an age gap. I highly recommend this book, and I'm grateful to @gay.romance.reviews and the author for the ARC!

Another wonderful story set in the fictional kingdom of Lilleforth from Sarah Honey. This is book 2 in the Tales of Lilleforth series and focuses on Mother Jones and Vasily. Mother was a great side character in the first book that I was excited to see that he was getting a story and for him to get his HEA.

Vasily comes from a neighboring kingdom to fulfill his dream of travel and take a break from the duties of being a prince. He also hopes to explore parts of his identity that aren’t widely accepted in his home kingdom. That leads him to a position in Lilleforth working at King Leopold’s castle. I absolutely adored the beginning between Mother and Vas and while he’s trying to help Vas out in the romance department, something awakens in Mother and he develops his own set of feelings for the younger groom. The dance between these two was tender, sweet, awkward at times in the best sense and such a great read. Even though it’s an age gap, both characters are fairly inexperienced at matters of the heart which really puts them at level footing with so many sweet domestic moments together.

I enjoyed that both characters really come into their own although in different ways. Mother is the most confident and capable in the stables but in the romance department, he’s unsure of himself but his relationship with Vas gives him the freedom to really explore that side of himself. And Vas seems to blossom during his time in Lilleforth and face his family and their expectations for his future (of course with a little help of my fave couple, Felix and Leo).

I enjoy the secondary characters that are in the book and wonder who we will see next - will Jeremy be lucky in love? Or perhaps one of the other characters that we have been introduced to at the castle? Looking forward to reading what’s next!

Mother Jones (aka Bryn) is the stable master in the kingdom of Liliforth. He is good at his job. He has never had the urge to be with someone. He has been satisfied being alone. That is until Vasily comes into his life.

Vasily is a prince from the kingdom of Koroslova. He is fourth son of King Alexei and fifth in line for the throne. He loves his family and his kingdom but there is something about himself he has been hiding. He is attracted to men but in his kingdom that is not accepted. His mother, Queen Irina, is a very loving and accepting woman. She has the king under her thumb. When she suggest her son spend a year traveling her husband agrees.

Vasily comes to the kingdom of Liliforth to work as a stable hand. No one in the kingdom knows his identity except the King, his consort and Janus, leader of the royal guard. While in Liliforth he was to work and be unknown as a prince. He wants to experience things in life he was never allowed to at home. One of the main things includes his sexuality. There is something about the stable master that draws his attention. He cannot help but be attracted.

The two start off slow but feelings explode. But the closer they get to each other the harder Vasily's secret will be to keep. He knows he has to share it but will sharing it destroy what he and Mother built?

I enjoyed this story. It was really sweet. These two together was very adorable. Neither has had any experience with relationships so they share many first together. I liked that the angst was low. I do wish there was a bit more of a resolution with King Alexei and Vasily but I will accept what was given. It did allow for the HEA in the end.

Highly entertaining M/M historical romance
This was a humorous, sweet story about a conscientious curmudgeon stablemaster in the fictious kingdom of Lilleforth where King Leopold has a husband, not a wife. Felix is Leo’s Prince Consort. (Read about them in the first book in this series.) Their stablemaster is 35yo Mother Jones. How he got his name is explained in the book so I won’t tell here. Unbeknownst to him, Mother is getting a new groom who is really the 4th son of the King of Koroslova, 22yo Vasily Petrov going incognito. Vasily is so funny trying to learn the ways of the world when he has lived a very sheltered and pampered life until his job. Mother cannot understand him sometimes but what Mother does have is feelings for the young man, which is an entirely new thing for Mother. He has watched others pair up but he has never found someone to feel that way about until Vasily. My favorite quote which occurs after a near-drowning: “ ‘I’ll always dive in, if it’s you,’ mother said, his gaze intense.”
What a clever, humorous and sweet story. I adore Vasily’s mother, Queen Irina. The end of the book is so good! I just bought Leo and Felix’s book because I enjoyed this one so much. If you like humor with your romance, you will certainly enjoy this book. I volunteered to review an ARC of it through Gay Romance Reviews.

This was a lovely love story with a royal acceptance.

In the second Tales of Lilleforth series, the stablemaster falls in love with the royal groom. Sarah Honey delivers on the root care and compassion "Mother Jones" has for his charges. Yes, he goes by Mother as it was a moniker given to him.

The significant lineage that Vasily Petrov has when Mother nourishes and supports his integration into life at the Lilleforth castle is unknown to Mother and many others. As the fifth in line to the King of Koroslova, he won permission to travel without disclosing his secret. His mother must have known about the gay King Leopold and his husband Prince Felix and was hoping for acceptance of her son to travel incognito to learn more about the world outside his father's kingdom.

It's a charming story of helping Vasily learn to cook porridge and other things. A visit to the ocean he has seldom seen and the adventure of spending time together creates romance.

The plot centers around that romance, a declaration of feelings, and the guilt of not telling Mother about his background. When Vasily tells Mother, Mother goes silent, and the angst of Vasily perhaps losing him is immense. But Sarah Honey knows how to create a "Happy Ever After," and this one is heartwarming, satisfying, and comforting.

This is a great series, and I'm off to the third.

Mother and Vasily's story was so sweet and entertaining! I got hooked on the premise of Vasily's year long adventure to explore his authentic self, and his interactions with Mother were special from the start. The two of them came together slowly, over long days working together and sharing meals, and I found their shy attraction completely irresistible. From flirting to hand holding and steamier pursuits, Mother and Vasily approached each new step with an eagerness that made my heart melt. I loved seeing the way they were around each other--so happy and full of wonder and love. Their companionship always felt really natural, and the emotional connection they were building only continued to get stronger over the course of the story. Vasily's belated reveal of his royal status made things a little awkward at first, but the love he and Mother shared made any potential repercussions worth the risk. After all the foreshadowing and buildup of how Vasily's father would handle the news of his sexuality, I was a little surprised by how the big conversation actually went down, but in a story so lighthearted and fun, I can't deny I was happy to see everything smoothed over in the end.

Mother Jones works hard as the stablemaster in Lilleforth. He watches as others fall in love but knows he has never found and probably never will find his own love. Then his stable is invaded by the new royal groom, Vasily Petrov. Vasily is a breath of fresh air with his laughter and smiles. Vasily is more than he appears. Fifth in line to the Koroslova throne, Vasily has been allowed to travel for one year. He finds Mother and wants to stay right where he is, but first he has to tell Mother who he is.

When Vasily first arrived, he wanted to explore but did not know how. Mother offers to show him how to at least flirt and ask someone out. It is not long before they want their actions to be the real thing. The two embark on a beautiful love affair. Leo and Felix are often around and their teasing and laughter bring light and love to the scenes as do Mother and Vasily. Reality soon intrudes and Mother is not sure his heart will survive. What will he and Vasily decide? You will need to pick up this fun and exciting story to find out. As we all did with Felix and Leo, we fall in love with Mother and Vasily as they do with each other. Beautifully written and fun to read – what more could you want?
