“Re:Birth” by Mitsuaki Asou is a dark omegaverse story about an alpha detective and his omega partner, who is a novelist. They have known each other each other since they were children, because they shared a room in the orphanage and so their relationship changed from childhood friends to lovers at some point. Their relationship is, however, not straightforward and they have issues that darken their lives.

The true darkness comes from a serial killer who targets omegas and whose pursuit propels the plot forward. The compexity of the omegaverse and its inherent lack of volition in choosing a partner is woven into the story as well as the tragic events of Habaki and En’s backstory.

This is a wonderfully complex, omegaverse manga with quite some spice but which is slightly blurred to rein it in ever so slightly.

~**~**~**~

This volume surprised me a lot - in a positive way. Since the Omegaverse is a genre I tend to dislike and therefore rarely read, I don't have much to compare it with, but I think this volume stands out.

I found the way society deals with the Omegas interesting, but also scary at the same time.... this felt actually frighteningly real in parts.

I found Ens' character and motivations very well described, Habaki almost seemed a little bland next to him. This one thing we learn about En I never expected and at that moment the story completely grabbed me.

The case that Habaki is assigned to seemed a little strange to me and I think it should have been fleshed out more here and there to be really exciting. I may be wrong, but there was a logical flaw (or was it the translation?) towards the end that was odd
This does diminish my enjoyment of the story a bit, but in the end, I think this part of the narrative was just supposed to be a little meandering subplot that is meant to resolve the conflict between En and Habaki towards the end anyway.

I would say that this volume is a good choice for people like me who usually don't like to read Omegaverse. Because even though there are themes here that are very common for the genre, they are well presented and fit into the overall concept of the story.

Warnings (may be incomplete)

Where to Read: Futekiya/Manga Planet

*More of a 4.5*

Another absolute banger from Mitsuaki Asou. WOW. I hope futekiya adds every single one of their works to their catalog. I want to read it all.

Ever since futekiya switched into Manga Planet their new format doesn't have descriptions so I'm not even sure what all to say. I usually go into things blind, but they're helpful for my reviews. Anyway all you really need to know is this is an omegaverse and it follows two orphans who grew up together and as adults they have a bit of a strained relationship despite being mated. The alpha is a police officer currently dealing with a strange murder case and the omega is a novelist/proofreader/ghost writer, who's hiding something. It's very angsty and delicious and I love it.

The beginning is honestly a bit confusing and I ended up reading this twice, so that I could read it and enjoy it without being completely confused. Spoilers for those who are still confused and need it explained:

The reason this isn't like a full 5 star is because the police investigation going on in the background was kind of half assed. Like don't get me wrong, I was absolutely gagged when they revealed who the murderer was, but then I realized all the little holes in this plot that made it not that great. I think there was too much going on in the relationship that the investigation plot wasn't as developed as it could've been. The idea was there, but there wasn't enough exposition for it. There weren't enough little moments sprinkled in to help you put the pieces together. It's all just dropped at once. Which is fine tbh. I think it made enough sense and would've been great if the author was able to have more pages/panels for it, but they were busy with the couple, which let's face it is what we really care about lol.

Either way I thoroughly enjoyed this and I need to read everything Asou Mitsuaki has put out and will put out. They just write painful angst so well. I'm obsessed.

Mis dieces a sensei.

I normally skip all a/b/o stories, but since adding this was the only way to push me into the free shipping threshold for a Kinokuniya order I was already making, I figured I'd read it and pass it on to a friend I knew wanted a copy. Too bad for them! I'm keeping mine.

It does have some of the elements I'm not particularly fond of - heats, social imbalance and omega prejudice, the idea of "ruts" absolving alphas of guilt- but those were all thoughtfully included as part of the plot.

I didn't know the twist going into it, and that made it a lot better for me, too. So much more interesting . There were parts that I struggled with a bit - some of the translations were a little dodgy, and in a couple spots they just blatantly arranged words incorrectly in the middle of sentences? Maybe Manga Planet doesn't have a big enough editing/proofreading staff.

More than that, I never fully understood what it was that happened during that incident in high school. They kept hinting at the memories that Yukimura had lost, and how devastated he would be to discover what he'd actually done, but...what did he do? Was the omega he'd attacked during his rut okay? (The bed they showed being wheeled into the hospital was fully covered by the sheets, which made them look dead...but there was also a statement from the omega's family about him being fine?) Did he actually attack the omega, or succeed at biting them? Or did he just break his tooth on the protective collar, which stopped him from a full mating bite? What did the other guys in the group do, and was he successful at stopping them before he went into his rut?

I wish those questions had been addressed better, but the key point was that the omega had looked enough like En for Yukimura to slot him into his fuzzy memories, and to fully believe that it was En he'd bitten.

And En, who has loved and taken care of Yukimura since Yukimura showed up at his orphanage, traumatized from watching his parents die and believing it was his fault, takes on that role and runs with it. He sets everything up so Yukimura will believe he was the one he'd rescued in the alley, so he won't ever have to apologize or feel guilty for anything again. (I still want to know if that omega's dead though.)

It's a painful and interesting love story, because all the work En puts into not hurting Yukimura means that Yukimura has spent years believing that En doesn't really love him. When the reality is that En loves him so much he's overturned his entire life just to try to keep Yukimura happy.

The side? main? plot threading the rest of the way through is about a series of omega rapes/murders that Yukimura is trying to solve, since he became a detective as a way to atone for his past guilt. I didn't actually catch who the killer was until the reveal, but it did make a lot of sense. (Although you'd think others during the investigation might've been able to identify him earlier, but I suppose most of it had been handled fairly anonymously after the first time.)

Also not really sure how the timing of the warehouse fire and rescue worked out, but I appreciated that En was at no point helpless or inferior. And I loved the final chapter and the resolution. Not a perfect story, but a very decent one with a lot of elements that inspire deeper thinking, so I'm glad I ended up tossing it into my cart.

I think the concept is really interesting, but this one just did not land for me and I found it really difficult to follow.

This may just be a bad translation, but some panels I read several times and was never able to make sense of. On top of that, it seemed like the reading order was inconsistent between panels.

I really wish that this manga followed the convention of delineating flashbacks with black fill-in between panels (or really did literally ANYTHING to delineate flashbacks from the present). For the first several flashback scenes where En and Habaki were teenagers, I straight up didn’t realize it was a flashback for several pages and had to back track to make sense of what was going on.

Also, without spoiling anything, I think it’s really fucked up how what Habaki did was glossed over / covered up.

I misunderstood the premise of the story when I read the summary, so I was quite confused with how the story progressed at first. Eventually, I figured out what was going on but before I could fully immerse myself into the story, it ended. Even so, En (MC) and Habaki (ML) had a happy ending and I was glad for them. In the world they lived in, they weren’t true fated mates but every day they chose each other, and that made their love truer than ever.

This was a really sad story, the end was kind of bittersweet. Overall, I enjoyed it. The character design was good and the Omegaverse world building well done. I wish it would have stayed a bit more on that because I really enjoyed it, it was just kinda thrown in between, which is better than info dump I guess, but that is up for preference.

Sadly was not a fan of the very slow beginning, I did like the explains of 2nd sex and the 2 main leads were great but lacked development and the annoying time jumps back and forth were hard to keep up. The Plot was interesting but predictable and he fake that the lies of who was attacked and who is an omega were just weird story missed a lot.
