A.V. likes to take a ride into the dark side of writing, but always makes sure to find his way back. If he can make his readers both captivated and uncomfortable, he knows he did his job.
A very dark, fabulous read. The story is mainly told from Ethan’s POV. He is obviously the glue that held this group of four friends together. Ethan is floundering a bit in his life after covid sank his business (and so many people can relate to that), he’s lost his confidence, his business and his best friend has pulled away from him. Anthony’s marriage ended disastrously. Jay went to prison. And Chris? Well he just pulled away from his friends and continued up the ladder in his job. From the beginning you can see that there are deep problems going on. Ethan keeps trying to bring them together, keeps defending Chris, even when Chris’ actions hurt him. Anthony and Jay have their own issues with Chris and Jay decides they need to get revenge. So, they plan a night at a cabin from their earlier friendship and Jay enacts his plan. Things get tangled and twisted fast and spiral out of control. It is seriously twisted, dark and so hot. The majority of this story takes place over a few days but it feels like a lifetime with all the angst, emotions and twists that pop up. I didn’t see a lot of it coming but it was thrilling, heartbreaking and beautiful. It ends on a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to see what happens next. The writing was wonderfully done. It’s hard to take these dark themes and write a story that is sensual, sexy, and entertaining but it’s done well here. There’s a lot packed into this story and I was hooked from the very first paragraph. I devoured it quickly and wanted more immediately.
Our Sweet Revenge was my first book of the author, A.V. Shener. And boy, what a wild ride it was!
In the author's bio, he said he wanted to make his readers "captivated and uncomfortable". And boy he did achieve that. I certainly felt uncomfortable for Chris. I almost felt sorry for him despite who he was. Then I truly did feel sorry for him at the end.
The author really did a great job in developing deep, realistic characters weaving into a great riveting plot that was quite a surprise!
4 close friends fell apart, 3 of them banded together to take revenge on the 4th guy. But things didn’t go according to plan..
This book is like a cliche B-movie thriller, with a big erotic twist. But it’s damn addictive, and hot. I read it in one go, and look forward to the next installment.
I recently joined a taboo romance group to find more books that catered to my, uh... interests, and I came across Our Sweet Revenge almost by accident. The second I read the premise I knew I had to read this book immediately. A dark, twisted thriller about three friends who set out to get revenge on the fourth member of their estranged group? Secrets, lies, and betrayal? Right. Up. My. Alley.
Jay’s story was brutal. Ant’s story broke my heart. Chris’s story was gut wrenching. And Ethan’s story is only just beginning…
The plot follows Ethan, an entrepreneur who lost everything during the Covid19 pandemic, who is roped into participating in a revenge scheme on Chris, the man he still considers his best friend. He and the two other members of their group, Jay and Anthony, lure Chris out to the cabin in the woods where they used to spend time together during their college years. There, all four men fall victim to one another's lies and manipulation.
What happens in that cabin is nothing short of a waking nightmare. It's dark, it's twisted, it's hot as hell. Seriously, there are trigger warning's on this book for a reason. But if you're like me, and those trigger warning's are more like selling points, Our Sweet Revenge will tick all the boxes for you. Be warned - you're going to end up with some blurred lines in your head after this story, and probably a new kink. Or two.
A.V. Shener was a new author for me, but the plot, the writing, and the intense relationships between the characters has got me desperate for seconds. Seriously, I'm chomping at the bit for book two, The Gentleman's Club, and I’ll be making a beeline for the authors backlist!
TW's: Dub-con, non-con, graphic sexual content, sort-of-abduction-sort-of-not, sexual assault, violence, mentions of past abuse and child abuse.
*ARC provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
While accompanying the four friends on the first half of their journey, one word continually crossed my mind: balance. In my humble opinion, an essential component of any good story is balance, and Mr. Shener gives it to us in spades with Our Sweet Revenge.
Just a few of the many examples within: - Consent and Dubious/Non-consent - Blinding Revenge and Sincere Remission - Ugly Brutality and Beautiful Empathy - Steamy Erotica and Arousing Sensuality - Devious Manipulation and Earnest Honesty - Jaded Experience and Novice Exploration - Filthy Sex and Tender Connection
The ‘Yin and Yang’ was done incredibly well (without a hint of contrivance) and made for a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience. I wait with bated breath for the conclusion of this story.
This is book is so good, so dark, so intriguing and so intense.
I've been in such a book slump lately, but this got me out of it. While I'm not one to read books by completely new-to-me authors, especially when the books are dark and I know that they will push my boundaries, I was immediately intrigued by the blurb and the premise. And it didn't disappoint.
Four men. Four long time friends with pasts, secrets, darkness.
Ethan - the main narrator, and who lost his career due covid
Anthony - who just got out of a marriage, and had a messy divorce Jay - just gotten out of prison
Chris - obsessed with advancing in life and career, and is in my opinion the most interesting and complex character
The pacing was perfect!!! Not too fast, nor extremely slow. A lot of details without making you ever become bored, that give you all the backstory needed without making you miss anything - bar for the things we're obviously not supposed to know yet.
The Relationships are simply amazing, and very very complex and multi layered. But I am not going to talk about those as i want to give 0 spoilers.
Please heed the trigger warnings, and keep in mind that this is a dark book, with detailed scenes, and with situations that might trigger you.
Our Sweet Revenge by A.V. Shener is book 1 in the Unbreakable Ties series.
When I read the blurb for this book I was intrigued by this revenge plot that takes place between a group of four friends. I didn't know exactly what to expect, and damn...I never thought it would be so twisted and unsettling. I really loved the feeling of discomfort that crept up on me the further I got into the story.
It was fascinating to see all the layers of the relationships between these four friends gradually revealed. Some of the things that happened between them led to this revenge plan and OMG it was something to witness. Definitely a book for those who like their stories dark. The second part which takes place in the cabin...😳😳😳. I honestly have no words. It was shocking and degrading...and I literally couldn't let go of my kindle.
You really need to look at the trigger warnings for this one. There's dubcon/noncon, violence and much more that I won't mention since I don't want to give anything of the story away. This is one you absolutely must discover for yourself. It's not a romance. I didn't miss that aspect, since what happens between Ethan, Jay, Anthony and Chris was fascinating. I need to read more of this kind of novel.
Nothing is resolved at the end and the story will continue in the second book of the series, The Gentlemen's Club.
Dark and thrilling! This was a wild, unexpected ride of revenge and revelations. The characters were so fleshed out and distinctive, and the interactions between them all were intricate and realistic.
Nothing predictable here. This novel sucked me in and kept smacking me with surprises. The type of revenge was unique, but perfectly matched for his actions. I couldn't put this one down.
I'm excited (and impatient!) to find out what happens next!
Four college friends have lost touch with each other and Ethan isn't sure how to get them back together. Jay was in jail. Anthony had a nasty divorce that made him come out. Ethan over expanded his business and had to ended up driving a delivery truck. Chris is the only one to be a success. But a drink at a bar between three of them starts a journey into revenge.
Interesting take on friends who let you down or take advantage of your and the recourse of it. A very surprising ending with a hfn. (Making grabby hands for book two!).

Firstly thank you to the lovely Author for giving me this opportunity to read and review this book.
I absolutely adored this book, it keeps you captivated, the history between the men, the spice everything it was simply incredible. This book was heartbreakingly beautiful and thrilling. Definitely a must read.
My little squirrel brain is still processing what the hell happened in this story (It was very good, read it!!) I’ll be back to edit this review when I’ve done another read though ⭐️5/5 🌶️5/5
What a rollercoaster! From stressed friendships to unexpected feelings, this book really takes you into the inner workings of betrayal and lust. These characters and their experiences were so intriguing that I couldn't stop myself from turning the page, telling myself "just one more chapter" even though I knew I had to put it down to sleep.
I really enjoyed this book. The thriller aspect really comes through -it’s not just a trope thrown in for fun. It’s dark, it explores how deeply our actions determine our lives and the lives of our friends. There is a psychological component to the things that happen in the cabin and I was on edge to see what would happen next.
WOW! That’s all I can say! I don’t think I have ever had a book leave me speechless but…. this one accomplished that. This book was so unpredictable and the revenge was so fitting. Most of the book is from Ethan’s POV, it seems, which is fitting since he is clearly the glue that was holding all 4 men together. All 4 MMC’s were so distinct and fully fleshed out in this book and the character development was top notch! The plot twist at the end has me chomping at the bit for book 2!!
All of us have secrets from our childhood, something we have done wrong and no one found out, or that was done to us and no one found out - except our friends!
Four young men, close as children, now adults are in various stages of their lives. Jay has been in prison, Chris is now a lawyer, Anthony has his own business, and Ethan, unable to get a decent job, is delivering UPS packages.
When it is discovered by Jay that Chris betrayed him, Jay gets the four together for a reunion, where someone goes too far...
I was privileged to follow the metamorphosis of this book from its inception to completion and I am amazed and delighted at the emergence of a talented new young writer! All the promise of his first book, Chaos in My Wake is replicated in spades. The characterization alone in both books is unusual in this genre.
I must also mention that Revenge and its predecessor are not for the faint-hearted!!! Gay erotica is not everyone's "cup of tea!" However, from a purely technical point of view, this book is well worth the five stars I have given it.
Oooh…I loved this. It wasn’t what I was expecting. From the title, I was expecting that someone was going to take revenge on our group of four men who have been friends for a long time. Maybe something happened when they were young and now it’s payback time. I was not expecting that it was a revenge story within the group….. I received an ARC copy from the author and this is my honest review.
Not sure what every one else read, but I barely got through Anthony's retelling of his sex with Chris. It was gross, manipulative, unrealistic, and also just not written very well. If that was only in the first part of the book, I didn't want to imagine what the rest of the writing was like.
I suggest you read this book. My dry eyes were glued to my phone screen until the last word was plucked from the page at 1am. I literally went through every emotion right up through the very end. You think you can relax but you can't. You're not sure who to trust. Feelings and motivations are all over the place. Four friends. One cabin during a storm. Wild.
There are a lot of warnings in this book and many potential triggers, so if you have concerns, do read these before starting. There is a lot that happens in this story and almost all of it is a spoiler to unravel the next spoiler, so it’s difficult to discuss details of the book in this review. The story is mostly told through Ethan’s POV, with a couple of scenes given to other MCs, but the transitions are done well and it’s always clear whose POV we are in. Ethan had a great idea for a tech company and he thought he was doing well, until he wasn’t and the business went under.
The group of friends has fragmented somewhat, but Jay keeps calling Ethan to get together and Ethan finally, reluctantly, agrees. Ethan hasn’t spent much time with Jay since he was released from prison and when Ethan, Jay, and Anthony meet up, they draw up a plan to get the four friends back together.
The ending intentionally leaves room for a lot of conflicted emotions, as the story then sets up the intensity for the next book, which I could use right about now. If you are looking for a more unconventional story with a darker edge, Our Sweet Revenge, would be the one to read next.
Once upon a time there were four men who came together for different reasons - yearning for home, internal insecurities, loneliness. And during the college years for some of them and early days at work for others, that sense of false security and belonging grew into an unlikely friendship, but a friendship nonetheless. The last shreds of that friendship, the struggles, failures, dreams and accomplishments of these four men - Ethan, Anthony, Chris and Jay - blend into a strikingly raw, emotionally intense and heartbreakingly profound story of how life can turn in an instant based not only on choices made, but also on external circumstances that sometimes cannot be prevented, no matter the efforts done. What made an immediate impression to me from the very beginning of the book was the foreboding sense of a storm brewing, and the tension that built as the plot unfolded. I was intrigued to see the slow unravelling of the foundation of their so called bonding, the way the illusion of something meaningful and deep between them started to dissolve and most of everything how these changes affected their lives and choices. One of the best examples was Chris, the social climber, who didn't hesitate for even a moment to use and manipulate his "best" friends - Anthony and Jay - for his own gain and to leave them behind like broken toys. Given time he would have found a way to utilise his friendship with the most delusional of all of them - Ethan- too. What the book described disturbingly well was that nothing is only black or only white but a variety of shades of grey and no one is 100% innocent. The story reached an even darker, grimmer climax when the four were reunited in a place that held particular emotional significance for them - the cabin. It was fascinating in a deeply disturbing, emotionally jarring kind of way to finally see the reveal of a big part of the secrets between them and how much they hurt each other while chasing their inner desires and goals. It was a dark sinister game of mind manipulation and heavy dose of humiliation with the cruel bite of the promise of even more to come.
The author, A.V. Shener, has stated that if he manages to make his readers "both captivated and uncomfortable," he's done his job. Well, I was definitely both, so congratulations, sir. This a dark and disturbing miasma of secrets upon secrets, shocking revelations and sex and violence that rips open old wounds in old friends, irrevocably changing the landscape of the friendships, if not the trajectory of their lives.
Shener skillfully exhibits each character's distinct personality and role within the narrative. However, I did have an issue with the narration slipping a few times from one character's voice to another without enough textual separation to distinguish the new perspective. It took me out of the flow of the narrative momentarily. Aside from that, Shener is a great storyteller.
Let's be clear—this is a novel written for an adult audience, tackling intense scenes of gay sex, violence and psychological warfare. There is a lot to digest, especially for sensitive readers. I came into this novel thinking I knew what I was in for, but I must admit the occasional scenario and character statement shook me.
The novel's ending is shocking. Eroticism, taboo exploration, and the psychology of extortionist sex carry us over into the forthcoming sequel which promises to be a further dive into the past and present of our characters' complicated relationships with each other. Our Sweet Revenge: Unbreakable Ties Book 1 by A.V. Shener is a complex, provocative exploration of resentment and how sex, lies, and betrayal can infect a supposed tight-knit friendship, leading to violence. To Revenge. Bold story-telling from author A.V. Shener.

Well, I read the description, I read the trigger warnings, and I read the prologue, but I had no idea what I was going to get with this story. I didn't think I'd be okay with the need for revenge these guys had against Chris, but I should have had faith that the author would get me on their side really quickly, and boy oh boy did A.V. Shener deliver my feelings of anger and need for retribution; seriously, Chris, wtf is wrong with you?? Treating your friends that way?? I mean, but time Anthony started talking to Jay and Ethan I was already upset, but then... wow. But THEN, wow... getting closer and closer to the end—unless Chris is an unreliable narrator—I started feeling remorse for him facing everyone's anger, but still, he did those things to hurt the people he supposedly loved and had been friends with for a decade, so is he redeemable? Obviously, he's just as damaged and in need of grace as the others (and seriously, they ALL need some grace after what happened), but does his past justify his behavior enough to earn their forgiveness? Can he actually make amends and be a better friend moving forward? Or has the damage already been irrevocably done? I guess we have to wait until December to find out, because that's a VERY interesting cliffhanger we've got on the last page... I cannot wait to see how they all come out on the other side of this story.

Ethan, feeling lost after losing his business to the pandemic, is hoping to reconnect with his friends. ALL of his friends, even though two of them seem bound and determined to sweep their former bestie, Chris, to the side. He doesn’t understand why the two of them want nothing to do with Chris, but when they finally spill their secrets he’s suddenly on board with a plan that involves some sweet revenge.
I’m not gonna type out that this was one shock after the other, but I can say that you really have no clue where the story is going pretty much at any point while reading. The story is told from Ethan’s POV (with two chapters being in two of the other MC’s) and he’s our most clueless MC. Though that can be frustrating at times it does allow an edge of mystery to seep into the pages and keeps you turning one after the other. I don’t think Chris is the bad guy one particular MC wants you to believe he is, but since we don’t hear much from him, you really don’t know. There’s a whopping zero percent fluff in this dark thriller, but you do get some teasers of feelings between a few intriguing main characters.
The author is a good writer. I like the voice he gives his MCs, and he keeps things interesting with the air someone who knows what they’re doing on a keyboard would. I can’t wait for book 2!

MMMM Humiliation/Degradation (light-moderate) Bondage (light) Non/Dub-Con Dark Thrillers Revenge Best Friends-to-“Lovers”
Then you’ll like this! ***warning: this is book one, and does end on a cliffhanger!! it does feature both non-consensual and consensual sex between men. there is mention of child sexual assault, and it is described on page (with minimal detail) by the victim.***
I really enjoyed this dark read, way more than I thought I might! Thank you to the author for an advanced copy!
The book is about 4 best friends who have drifted in adulthood - one is busy with his skyrocketing career, another is scrounging after the pandemic tanked his business, one is freshly released from prison, and the fourth just got divorced. In an effort to heal some of the damage done between them over recent years, they head to the cabin where they used to spend a lot of time together, and things get extremely heavy as surprising truths and deeper details come out. Things get intense very quickly and there are several unexpected turns that kept me exclaiming on the edge of my seat the whole time! It’s emotional, it’s shocking, it’s dark, and it’s a thrilling read! I’m eagerly awaiting Book 2…
I was so invested in the relationships amongst the main characters, as a group but also the relationships between the individual characters and each of their friends. I liked the way the author explored how these relationships set the stage for how these friends could end up hurting each other so badly, but also how they they think they might come back from that pain.
This is a book about deeply flawed people who make very questionable choices. I would describe these characters as beyond morally gray, doing things that are hard or impossible to justify. Be sure to read the content warnings, as this book and the taboo subjects it contains won’t be for everyone, particularly if non-consensual or dubiously consensual sex isn’t something you want to read. Note that this book also discusses child abuse that took place off page.
At first I was a bit hesitant on this story. it started off slower than I'd have liked, but it really picked up right before the end of part 1. I found myself unable to put the book down as I needed to know what evil things were being planned for revenge. I liked how part 2 played out and how Ethan had a coming to terms with himself revelation during the evening. I also liked the promise of a budding relationship with him and Anthony. I thought that this was a romance story after all because everyone was going to have a happy for now ending and friendships were all renewed. Then I read the epilogue. There is more revenge to be had and now I can't wait for book 2 to see what depraved things will happen.
There are some very dark and disturbing topics covered in this book. If you are sensitive to these then you really should steer clear. However, if you feel you can handle it then I think you'll enjoy the story. The writing is great and the imagery that the author paints is quite vivid. Plus if you want a side of revenge filled with your steamy scenes, then this book will have you covered.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Readers should be aware that this is a very dark story about a group of friends who are out for revenge against one of their own. They want to make him pay, but the plan orchestrated by one of them is not what they all planned. There are triggers that include non-con/dub-con, forced sexual acts, bondage, and multiple men seeking retribution by deceiving, abducting and almost-raping for wrongs against them.
All of that aside, the story is a little disjointed at the start until you see the common denominator that the friends share: their hatred of someone they thought was their friend. Soon, the story is as cohesive as the group planning the revenge and the action may not be for all readers.
I thought that the author was very good at weaving the story so that it comes together in the end. There is no HEA and not even a HFN. The cliffhanger is a twist you won't see coming!
It's a difficult subject to read, but it's a very good story.
