Identical stood the two Taj Mahals, but the black one hid a sinister secret.
Buried in the sands of time is an urban legend-there was once another grand tomb as beautiful and as magnificent as its white twin, the Black Taj Mahal. But it hid a dark secret: the sixty-four chopped hands that built the White Taj.
Centuries later, during the British era, twelve-year-old Nuru befriends a queen from the erstwhile Mughal courts. Mumtaz appears and disappears as she pleases but warns of a prophecy. The revival of the pisacha-a ghoulish union of the sixty-four severed hands that built the White Taj Mahal.
Everyone's end is near and there is only one way to defeat this evil-find the fabled Black Taj Mahal.
Review: This is a historical, fantasy, horror, thriller, sets up in the British era.
The book starts with our protagonist Nuru, a simple boy, son of the headman of the village. But he has a special friend, a friend whom only he can see and talk to. That friend of him teaches him a lot of magical things and tricks as if to prepare him for something. Then it's been confirmed all these are for upcoming ominous blood moon. And we go an suspenseful, ominous journey with Nuru to see what happens in The Blood Moon and how things unfold.
The book is really fast paced and very captivating that even though it's 208 pages. You'll finish it in just two to three sittings.
I just love how the author intricately put his own plot into the history of Taj Mahal and some of the unknown secrets of it.
As for the character Nuru and another one we meet next are really compatible for the plot. Like the development of their characters.
So definitely a good book to indulge. And let me tell you , this is an story done by a father and son duo. A son who's a middle schooler and he did all the amazing illustrations and the father is an well-known creative leader. Isn't it intriguing.

Based on the genre of horror fantasy. This book was spooky, filled with suspense, and thriller, and was fascinating.
We all know about 'The Taj Mahal' 🤍, have heard about its tale, that it was built by the Shah Jahah for his wife Mumtaz, that it was the symbol of beauty and love but there's always bad in good, and hatred in love.
Built with that hatred, there was 'The Black Taj' 🖤. Made with some mysterious black marble, upon the sixty-four chopped hands of the builders of the White Taj (The Taj Mahal) but this wasn't all. There was a secret, a curse, buried and locked deep inside the Black Taj.
On the other hand Nuru a 12-year-old boy was living peacefully but suddenly met a mysterious friend in the deep woods. She wasn't a normie or any village girl. She was something more, someone, who was not from this World. She taught and trained Nuru, how to face the soon-to-come danger.
🌸 My view The book was fascinating with an impressive amalgamation of folklore, magic, horror, and filled with thriller. The events, plots, and scenes were so vividly detailed that I even got spooked while reading the book. The atmosphere of the story became increasingly menacing when the narrator unraveled the Story of the Black Taj and the demon that lurked inside its walls. The narrative style of the author was simple & easy and the element that made it memorable was the detailed, vivid scenes, which will give you a real-life experience and goosebumps. This book was not only about horror and fantasy but It was about family, friendship, and trust. It was about finding faith and the strength to go on. The world-building was so rich you could easily picture each scene and event.
🌸Characters The character of Nuru was strong, and Brave, even after being a 12-year-old he possessed some remarkable qualities. I also liked the character of Baldev (Nuru's father). I was really empathized with him during every step of the story as he possessed some good parental qualities. Many times I find my opinion of certain characters kept changing throughout the book.
🌸Also, the setting of the book was during the British era. I loved how the authors blended the European British world with the Indian village life. The use of guns, and trains felt new and gave us a new angle. I was completely captivated from start to finish and the illustrations in the book were absolutely stunning.
Who was that new friend of Nuru? Why was she helping Nuru and teaching him everything? What was the danger she was talking about and what was the prophecy?
Do read this book to find out about the Secrets that were trapped inside the mysterious BLACK TAJ.
We all heard the stories of the Taj Mahal's ultimate beauty & the love story of Shah Jahan - Mumtaz. How Shahjahan dedicated the Taj Mahal to Mumtaz and how he ordered to cut the hands of those labourers who made the Taj Mahal.
⚕️Well, this book will give you further insights, which hardly anyone knows; I myself was unaware of this tale.
⚕️I found the blurb of book capitaving.
⚕️It revolves around the tale of Nuru.
⚕️A boy born with natural leadership & courage found a mesmerising djinn whose name was Mumtaz. Even though he knew that he shouldn't interact with supernatural elements, he found Mumtaz to be a heartwarming friend.
⚕️He put his faith and trust in all her instructions and sayings.
⚕️While he found those abilities to obtain various animals' strength within him, he also found something haunting & sinister about the Blood Moon.
⚕️ While other people locked themselves in their homes, scared of this sudden sinister blood moon, Nuru gathered courage to face it & end it all.
⚕️This eventually leads him to the sinister secrets & hauntings of ancient times.
⚕️When Nuru faces the sinister monster, and that's how he understands the danger of the situation.
⚕️The weird creature with raging red eyes looked at him, & Nuru found himself unable to breathe.
While on his journey, Nuru found Jack, a soldier but actually a cowardly guy, in the middle of the jugle & that's how it started the journey of Nuru & Jack to end this haunting creature forever.
⚕️How they ended this is a real suspense ride, full of actions and twists. ( readers, read the book)
⚕️I absolutely found the story of Black Taj & Shah Jahan, Sherock, captivating, thrilling.
⚕️While I have knowledge about the tale behind Taj Mahal & Shah Jahan, I didn't know anything about Black Taj Mahal and Sherock, which this book introduced me to.
⚕️I admired Nuru for his bravery, honesty & courage.
⚕️His bond with his father was heartwarming for me to read.
On the other hand, I was shell-shocked by the sheriff, Xunar.
⚕️Xunar is something with hands that will grab you into their evil web & danger as soon as you're near it. - GRABBER
⚕️The illustrations were an absolute delight to admire.
⚕️The book put me under its spell until the end of the story.
⚕️A message:
"It doesn't matter how strong the evil is; it cannot stand against the purity of the good"

The looming prophecy of the revival of the pisacha, a malevolent entity born from the union of the severed hands, adds a chilling element to the narrative. The urgency to prevent the impending evil fuels the plot and keeps readers captivated.
The characters are well-crafted, with Nuru and Mumtaz leading the way as fascinating and dynamic figures. Mumtaz's ability to appear and disappear at will adds an air of mystique to the story, while Nuru's journey to uncover the truth unfolds with determination and courage. In conclusion, "Grabber" is a thrilling novel that seamlessly blends history, myth, and the supernatural. With its intriguing plot, well-developed characters, and a sense of looming danger, this book is sure to appeal to fans of mystery and suspense. Zehan Zachary and Nirmal Pulickal have crafted a compelling story that will keep readers hooked until the very last page.
Since my childhood, the Taj Mahal, one of the 8 wonders of the world, held an undeniable allure, captivating me with its grandeur and beauty. Yet, my enchantment turned to revulsion when I learnt of a haunting tale: the alleged order by Shahjahan to sever the hands of the workers who built the Taj. Though lacking concrete evidence, this unsettling narrative clung to my young mind. Now, "Grabber" resurrects those memories, reigniting the conflicting emotions associated with the hidden darkness beneath the Taj Mahal's majestic facade.
When 12-year-old Nuru is out goat-herding, he meets a mysterious young woman, Mumtaz. Though realizing pretty soon that she is not human, Nuru trusts her to teach him a few incantations and spells to ward off evil. Mumtaz warns him about a blood moon night approaching soon when he absolutely shouldn’t leave his home and gives him a strange black stone as a protection amulet. The night comes and despite Mumtaz’s warnings, Nuru is forced to go out, as a child from the village gets grabbed by an unknown entity. While everyone is busy consoling the mother and assessing the situation, Nuru accidentally gets a glimpse of the horrifying creature known as the Grabber, Its serpentine tentacles coiled and poised to strike, a malevolent glint in its red eyes.
The book promises an enchanting blend of fantasy, horror, and historical mystery, accompanied by stunning pictorial descriptions. While the illustrations are undoubtedly a visual delight, the plot execution falls a little short of expectations. The main characters are likable but their development remains superficial, preventing me from resonating with them. Without well-rounded characters, the sentiment required to become fully invested in their journey is lacking. Although it is worth noting that the target audience of young readers (below 18 years) may find more enjoyment in "Grabber" than adult readers. The simplistic writing style and the fast-paced nature of the narrative might better align with their reading preferences. Overall, I would say the piece is a fun quick read and kudos to Jehan for drawing the main antagonist that subsequently birthed this tale.
History has always been my genre, a little blend of fiction with this can lead to a massive creation which is exactly what this book did. Theories/stories from the past with a black element are the perfect suspense builder. The blurb of “Grabber” has a white as well as a black Taj Mahal, Boom! That was it... I just picked up the book.
Grabber is the absolute children's and adult-friendly, fantasy, thriller-horror book set in the British era. The mystery behind the mystery is the main pull of the story. We've grown up listening to tons of stories regarding the Taj Mahal right? And chopping the hands of the then workers who built the Taj Mahal is more famous. This story is united by two identical Taj Mahals but divided by their colors- Black and White.
Black despite its beauty is buried with the chopped hands of those who built the white one. For Jehan, which started just as a simple harmless class assignment soon turns out to be a thrilling and horrific journey in return. Nuru a colonial character befriend the ghost of Mumtaz (the reason why the White Taj Mahal was built) and with a help of a British soldier sets out to defeat an urban legend called Pisacha(which is the formation of all the ghostly buried hands jointly) of the Black Taj Mahal.
The outcome of this story was way ahead of what my mind could just think of. How can such a mind think like that oh god! It was such a thrilling and meticulous tale you can't even imagine. Being a fan of both genres I enjoyed it. Also being an Indian it was super fascinating to read it. I could really see such a thing happening in front. Nuru is the most handsome character I've ever met. Trust me!
A bit of eeriness, a few breathtaking adventurous actions and there's a lot more to it. Mentions of tiny elements which led to this story would make you emotional. Indians would really get touched. Simple narration, super special illustrations, and a perfect ending make it a perfect read for everyone out there. And one more thing I've no clue how the title of this story came into their mind but there could not have been any better than this, why? Well, for that reason I'm out guys! Pick and read...
Book Name: Grabber Author: Jehan Zachary & Nirmal Pulickal Publisher: Puffin Books Format: Paperback Language: English Genre: Historical fiction Pages: 208 Book Rating: 5/5
As a child, I heard a story from my grandparents that the hands of the architects who built the Taj Mahal were cut off. I used to imagine and embellish the details of this story. Recently, this book has brought back memories of my childhood. Although there is no concrete evidence to support this claim, it has been believed for centuries.
Nooru, the son of the village headman, had the rare ability to communicate with spirits and ghosts. It was during one of his goat-herding sessions on the outskirts of the village that he met the royal lady Mumtaz. She taught him many tricks and gave her a dire warning about the coming Blood Moon Night. True to her words, that very night, Nuru stumbles upon a mysterious creature with severed hands coiled like snakes attached to him. Its presence caused widespread panic and fear among the villagers. What was the purpose of this creature? What dark secrets were buried beneath the black Taj Mahal? How did Qazim, the main architect of the White Taj, raise Xunxar while taking revenge? Follow Nuru's along with Jack's adventurous journey to get answers to all these questions and more in this engrossing historical fiction that leaves readers in wonder.
The narration was brilliant. The story exuded a fantasy excellency, containing terrifying elements, which gave it a touch of horror. The cover image, along with the suggestive title immediately can catch one's attention. The Blood Moon chapter, in particular, was a thrilling read that left me on the edge of my seat. The author duo masterfully created the setting. The illustrations featured in the book masterfully capture the sense of adventure, making it a captivating read for both adults and children alike. I thoroughly enjoyed the work of fiction and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great read.
It has been a while since I have picked up a book that’s meant for children. But truly, do books have demarcated boundaries for readership? I do not think so. So when I saw the opportunity to read this book, I grabbed it. Grabbed it like the pisacha in this book and went on a reading spree that took an entire day from the uncountable days of my life (or countable? It's debatable but let’s shelve it for another time.)
I would gently ask you to go through the blurb. It will quench your need to understand why I had to grab the Grabber. I am assured that you’d understand.
It is enjoyably astonishing to me that the idea behind the story came from a school assignment! One of the co-writers Jehan Zachary is an immensely talented middle schooler and the son of Nirmal Pulickal, a co-writer of this book as well. Both ideated meticulously and mostly Nirmal wrote a delicious tale wrapped in ancient urban legends and ghoulish creatures with wicked names. A comprehensive research was done and it reflects in every line that this tale serves.
While reading a book that’s written for children, we do come up with a doubt; will it be able to satiate an adult as well? Will the act of reading such a book provide joy to them? I would like to say that this book puts that doubt to rest. Within its 200 pages, it beholds the thrill of a true horror fiction and what’s more? It is homegrown, the characters have sprung out of Indian myths and legends.
I enjoyed following Nuru, an extremely intelligent and witty boy. I love how the authors have shown that demographics and a lack of formal education can never dim the intelligence a child or an adult has the potential to harbour within. I loved the character ‘Jack’. He’s a firangi but not as brave and without any fault lines that they are usually portrayed with. He is a flawed man who has the ability to redeem himself.
All in all, with a great cast of characters and djinns and pisachas to grab hold of your mind, this book is a delightful weekend read, for both children and adults alike. Therefore, it has my adoration!
This is a thrilling tale penned by a talented father-son duo, centered around the captivating urban legend of the Black Taj Mahal. Transported back to the colonial era, readers will follow the courageous Nuru as the protagonist of this gripping narrative. The story intricately weaves in the historical account of Shah Jahan's brutal act of severing the hands of the masons to prevent the creation of another masterpiece like the Taj Mahal. The aftermath of this event and the mysterious occurrences that unfold thereafter serve as the heart of the story. Spanning two distinct time periods, one during Shah Jahan's reign and the other in the colonial era, the narrative seamlessly merges these timelines, creating a captivating tapestry of events. The inclusion of illustrations throughout the book not only breathes life into the characters but also immerses readers into the very essence of the story. Among the cast of characters, Nuru and Boomerang Jack shine brightly. Jack's relatable personality will resonate with readers, as he navigates situations with cunning, even when faced with cowardice. Another notable figure is Mumtaz, who guides and prepares the young Nuru for the trials he must face. Nuru's unwavering courage and determination to protect his village are evident through his actions. You will also encounter a host of supernatural and spine-chilling characters that will send shivers down your spine. The language employed in this book is simple and easy to follow, allowing readers to become fully immersed in the tale. The captivating cover art perfectly captures the essence of the story contained within. While this gripping fantasy/thriller/horror story will captivate readers of all ages, it will particularly resonate with the 12+ age group. In all, this book offers a thrilling and fantastical journey that can be devoured in a single sitting. I rate it 4 out of 5 stars.
In the banks of Jamuna stood the magistic architecture, one of the world's greatest achievements by human, The Taj Mahal. But there was another replica of it on the opposite bank, a sister Taj, mirroring the white one, except this one is black. Identical stood the two Taj Mahals, but the black one hid a sinister secret. What secret does it hold in it's crevices? Centuries later Nuru befriends a queen from the erstwhile Mughal courts, who is this friend who seems to come from a different world. Will she help Nuru when his village gets caught up in a sinister dark force and people starts to go missing? The evil force is rising and now it's up to Nuru to save his village.
'Grabber' is a work of fiction blending urban fantasy and history together to bring an outstanding horror story that fits perfectly into the timeline of seventeenth century. This book is influenced by the urban myths that surrounds Shah Jahan and the infamous tale of him cutting hands of the workers who built Taj Mahal. What started as a school project turned into a full blown horror fiction and it amazes me how such an unseemingly tale can be converted into something much more enjoyable for kids and adults as well. The book also has little touch of persian culture and is set in British era which seems apt. In simple words the storyline is great and the plots are arranged methodically. However there are gaps in the plots, sometimes they are abrupt. We get to see some interesting characters. While Nuru's character is prominent, I found Baldev, Mumtaz and Jack's character captivating.
Writing style is okay, the storytelling could have been better. Written in simple language hence kids and beginners can enjoy this book. The book is adorned with beautiful art works, I find it amazing and it added so much depth to the story. Sometimes pictures can help us visualise the plot and the pictures in this book did great job.

TAJ MAHAL,a magnificent architecture that was built during the Mughal era by the emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz. Be it a myth or truth, we've listened a lot about the chopped hands of the architects that built the Taj Mahal and were surprised thinking about the reason for such a cruel act.
As the blurb of the book speaks, I was completely mesmerised by the thought of a twin Taj Mahal which is exactly opposite in colour with evil summoned in it. This book is the journey of a twelve year old boy Nuru who was selected by destiny to destroy the evil that was kept hidden during the Mughal era and came back in the British era. What is this evil? Why did it come back after so long years of waiting? What is the mystery behind the Black Taj Mahal? To find out grab this adventurous and paranormal tale…
I must say this book is such an amazing fusion of fiction and myths to create an adventurous and paranormal tale in an intriguing and fast paced manner that left me hooked till the end. The book Grabber has been written by Jehan Zachary and Nirmal Pulickal. The book has been very well written and the author has tried to come up with a really fascinating story.
We all have heard about the story that Shah Jahan Chopped the hands of the architect and workers of The Taj Mahal so that such beautiful monument is never made in history again. However have you ever given a thought to it, if not then please read this story as the author has beautifully penned the story of the chopped hands.
The protagonist of the story is Nuru, who is the son of the headman of the village and all the kids of his age look up to him. This boy has great leadership skills and he is also courageous about which you will know later on in the story. Nuru’s and his gang’s adventures are also really very exciting to read about like the time he set up a market and sold all the mangoes of Jagan Ram to the passing tribals in exchange of worms which he thought of using as a bait to catch fish. He was a witty boy with a lean athletic body. Looking at these abilities he was given the mission of finding The Black Taj Mahal by the ghost of Mumtaz in order to save the people of his village. I would like to take a moment out to appreciate the creative cover of this book which looks so cool and interesting. The title of this book makes it spin chilling for the kids and thus concluding it to be one of the best thriller books.
I read this book with lot of excitement. Each and every line is nice. And there are so many twists and turns which will eventually keep you wondering. The book framed two distinct timeframes. And switching between in the story has been done perfectly. The way the author kept the suspense element intact till the end is really great. I enjoyed this story a lot. Highly recommended .
The cover page was perfectly designed and the interesting title 'Grabber' made me grab this book. I had a different perspective while reading the blurb but the story was something like time traveling to that particular period of time.
The story Grabber begins with the village set up and our protagonist is Nuru. His father understands that his son Nuru is different from all other boys but he remains silent till the right time comes. Nuru's activities were like initiative and a natural leader. One day while crossing the forest he encounters a strange girl named Mumtaz who brings a turning point for Nuru. She was full of riddles and all her clever stories made Nuru stay with her without any doubt and he knew she was a djinn. He liked her company because there was something extraordinary in her. She taught him the basics of survival and few energies. She tells Nuru about the blood moon and steps to be taken at that time. Happening to the blood moon, the reason for the presence of black tajmahal, Nuru undergoes a life changing experience of his life and many other natural realism and supernatural entities all together makes this book fascinating.
Narration was flawless, character descriptions were high at its standard, every chapter has something to be noticed and learnt. The author has handled the imaginative part effectively. Bringing the aroma of the surroundings and the feel of the supernatural presence takes an extra effort. The author's blend of creativity and history had came out well and best.
Special credit to the picturizations drawn accordingly. Those sketches were catchy and were even placed accurately. This book can be provided even for children. It's beginner friendly too
🎗Grabber, written by Nirmal Pulickal and Jehan Zachary, is an example of a book with all the characteristics of dark forces, pisacha, and demonic spirits. The unseen Black Tajmahal, which was built during Shah Jahan, is the subject of the tale. I adore reading books with a sinister undertone or some supernatural components.
🎗Nuru and his enigmatic conversations with an unidentified being are how the story opens. He is intended for a higher mission, which becomes apparent shortly. The action then starts when Jack arrives and has his meeting with the jungle demon.
🎗What I liked about the story was how the backstory was told side by side in an effortless manner with the present incidents of Nuru and Jack's life. The distinct way of storytelling helped in avoiding confusion within the two timelines while simultaneously enjoying the story. The way the myth of the Black Taj was turned into the backdrop for a spine chilling origin of this book was really intriguing to read. I specially liked how the author kept some parts of the reality like the story of Mumtaz and Taj Mahal and infused it with their own imagination in such a wonderful way that by the end of the story it became really difficult to tell what was true and what was not.
🎗It's always amazing to hear about scary stories that were created by children since they always provide room for the craziest fantasies to manifest. This is the ideal blend of frightful, ghosts, and ghouls for a delightful summertime read.
🎗Overall This book will keep you fascinated and give you a new perspective on the Taj Mahal. It is a thrilling horror fantasy blended with a myth from Indian history and photographs at the appropriate locations
Grabber is a perfect mix of thrill, horror, mystery, history, suspense and much more. This fantastic book is written by a 12 year old boy Jehan Zachary and his father Nirmal Pulickal. Yeah, you read it correctly a father and son together wrote this amazing thriller book. The imagination of this 12 year old Jehan is simply next level. Both the author's father and son have created this mesmerizing suspenseful thriller which I couldn't put down till I finished reading it.
Growing up I have heard so many stories about Taj Mahal and how it is a symbol of love but reading this story with a totally different theme gave an altogether fresh perspective. A 12 year old boy Nuru sees a Royal lady who always appears and disappears befriends him and teaches him so many things and tells him about the prophecy. Why is that Royal lady talking and explaining things to Nuru? What is that dark secret and curse which is buried in the black Taj Mahal? There is a connection with the 64 chopped hands and that is the main thing in the story which made me wonder how much more thrilling the story could be.
As a huge fan of thriller and fantasy books I absolutely loved and enjoyed reading every bit of this book. This book started in Jehan's imagination and turned out to be a breathtaking book. Sometimes we guess what will happen next but here I couldn't because it was far beyond my imagination.
Kudos to this father and son duo for bringing such a story to us. The twists and turns will definitely make you feel like you are witnessing everything. The illustrations are beautiful, creative and intense. Overall, this book was good, engaging, fast paced and unexpected. I will definitely recommend this book to everyone.
Book 59 of 2023 - Grabber by Jehan Zachary and Nirmal Pulickal - A gripping Indian story of redemption revolving around the Taj Mahal
I have observed that I have been reading a lot more darker books lately, which is a surprise as I am very sensitive, but somehow my curiosity keeps getting to me. When I read the blurb of this book, especially when the plot revolves around Taj mahal. I had to pick it up.
This book was another unexpected find. Books on my list are surprising me a lot these days lol, because it is not like a typical Indian book full of complexity and edginess, as there were a lot of new age writing elements mixed in which made the book refreshing and the Black Taj elements added a bit of unnervingness because you know Taj is a world renowned love monument that all mixed in together, made it a really interesting read.
I loved Nuru and Mumtaz. They were the highlight of the book, even though their relationship was a bit unnerving filled with mystic vibes, but their arc together made me more and more curious about what's going to happen next.
I did feel there were few parts less believable, because as an Indian, I know how redemptions usually go, but in the end, when all the elements came together marking redemption, it made perfect sense and the ending was really satisfying too.
I loved the artwork, they added a beautiful touch especially for imaginative minds, mine being one as a Harry Potter fan. I also loved the elements of India mentioned in the book, like the train station, train ride and Taj Mahal. They added a touch of nostalgia to the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves India but is open to new things too *wink*.
One evil night the 64 dead hands of the builders of the White Taj Mahal fused with the snakes and the sorcerer's blood. The pistachio is more powerful than ever. Xunxar, drinkers of blood were now vampires, thirsty for blood.
A Black marble has been found by Nuru and Jack in the black Forest. Years back the evil is buried inside the walls of the Black Taj Mahal. It's out now and as a grabber taking the peace away from the village. A strange girl is helping Nuru find out the dark secrets of the forest. Baldev knows his son Nuru is not an ordinary kid. His suspicious eyes are searching for Mumtaz, a djinn. but she is nowhere to be seen. The journey from Agra to Kanpur going to be a trip for the Musketeers. What is ahead of them?
We all have heard the story behind the White Taj Mahal made by Shah Jahan in memory of Mumtaz. Arrested by his son Shah Jahan lost his life and was buried with Mumtaz in the mahal but the dark secret behind the Black Taj Mahal never left Agra. When I read the blurb about the Mughal empire I just couldn't stop myself from reading the story Nuru. More than that the secret of the Black Taj Mahal is more fascinating than anything.
There is no proof of the existence of the Black Taj Mahal as Shah Jahan has been deposed by Aurangzeb, his son. I don't know if it's a myth or another history of the Mughal Empire but the storytelling is magnificent . The spine-chilling story is a blend of horror, history, mystery, thriller turned out to be a page-turner for me.
A quote- 'Sometimes what you see and think is real is not. Sometimes, what you think is a dream is not.
I must begin by expressing my profound love for this book, primarily because it features a character named Narayani. The moment I turned a few pages and stumbled upon that name, a wide smile instantly spread across my face. Not only is Narayani my namesake, but the confidence she instills in her child and her exemplary upbringing of her son make her my absolute favorite character in the story. Despite her limited presence in the book, she left an indelible impression on me.
Speaking more about the book, I initially approached it as a children's read. However, I soon realized that if this book is intended for children, then they are indeed fortunate to have far more captivating material than some of my recent adult picks. The story revolves around Nuru, who embarks on a journey of exploration in a new world. It all begins with his adjustment to the village environment, eventually leading to the discovery of the untold story of the Taj Mahal, a revelation brought to him by none other than a ghost or jinn residing within its majestic walls for centuries.
Undoubtedly, this book is brilliantly written, with a captivating flow that keeps readers engrossed from start to finish. The authors' imagination is truly remarkable, and I applaud their ability to maintain a constant level of engagement throughout the narrative. While the entire book is exceptional, my personal favorite part revolves around the mystery of the black Taj.
If you are seeking a book filled with intriguing twists and a wealth of historical information, I wholeheartedly recommend this one. It is a literary masterpiece that will leave you enthralled and enriched.
____ 📍I have read a middle-grade fiction book filled with magic, djinn, adventures & a bit of horror, after ages and i relished it. The language & vocab is good & needs special mention. The story is engrossing & I felt myself experiencing everything instead of Nuru, the MC. It was enchanting & captivating. The character of Nuru, who had fertile imagination, had a problem obeying rules but was intelligent (and had a wild spirit) acc. to his father, was so relatable. The b/w full page illustrations were too good. I read this book at night & they gave me goosebumps. I would also like to mention something from the acknowledgement, about duct-taping the windows which brought a smile on my face & I ended the story & closed the book on a happy note. It is loosely based on historical fiction, few facts which we all know (not revealing too much) & the story is eeaved around them.
Grabber by Jehan Zachary and Normal Pulickal is one of the best children's book that I have read this year. It is the perfect blend of history meeting the present.
The book is featuring our very brave little hero Nuru. The story starts with Nuru and his mysterious talks with an unknown entity. Soon it becomes clear that he is destined for a higher purpose. Then comes Jack and the encounter with the demon of the jungle and the action begins.
What I liked about the story was how the backstory was told side by side in an effortless manner with the present incidents of Nuru and Jack's life. The distinct way of storytelling helped in avoiding confusion within the two timelines while simultaneously enjoying the story.
The way the myth of the Black Taj was turned into the backdrop for a spine chilling origin of the 'Grabber' was really intriguing to read. I specially liked how the author kept some parts of the reality like the story of Mumtaz, Taj Mahal and infused it with their own imagination in such a wonderful way that by the end of the story it became really difficult to tell what was true and what was not.
The story was fast paced with turns at each chapter which made me complete it in one sitting. The title is very apt and the cover of the book adds to the thrill and mystery backdrop of the book. Certain illustrations in the middle of the story make this more fun to read. The language is really simple to understand and the word building is fabulous.
The book, "Grabber" by Jehan Zachary and Nirmal Pulickal is a fantastic thriller fiction with the touch of supernatural twists and turns along with the essence of a historical aspects. In this magnificent yet sinister Taj Mahal twin lie the sixty-four chopped hands of the stonemasons that built the White Taj. The story talks about a Black Taj Mahal, an identical twin of our White Taj Mahal, where the sixty-four chopped hands are buried that built the White Taj. There is the ghost of Mumtaz Mahal which helps Nuru, the main protagonist, defeat a pisacha - a ghoulish union of the sixty-four severed hands that built the White Taj Mahal. The description of the pisacha is amazing and why it is called Grabber, you'll have to read the book. The story begins when a twelve-year-old wise and courageous boy, Nuru meets the ghost of Mumtaz Mahal, the Queen of the Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan. Even though,he knows he shouldn't interact with something paranormal, still he befriends her and follows her instructions. Nuru trusts to everything she says and does accordingly. But Nuru is not alone in his journey. Joining him is Jack, a fellow adventurer who adds an extra layer of excitement to this gripping tale. Together, they navigate through dangerous obstacles and unravel a shocking plot that involves revenge and betrayal. The reason why the author had added the twist of ghost is to show how pisacha and the protagonist Nuru are linked to each other. Characterization is done apt, but i wish, the book had some more darkness, because then it would be thriller pack!
