It’s been a year since Sam traveled back to the past and his mission is far from over.

Second Chance Swordsman 2 continues the best-selling LitRPG/Progression Fantasy series by Jakob Tanner, author of Tower Climber and Arcane Kingdom Online . The story contains RPG mechanics, stats, and ranks as a form of power progression.

Just a lot of the story for this one seems forced without much logic or thought put into it. For example everyone fawning over the 17 years old MC to the point another team asks him to help with a sad member. Seriously what’s the point and logic to that when that team is supposed to be extremely close and then that member finds inspiration in his battle in the dungeon with the MC. Numerous other silly plot points like queen giving everyone including the guards the off and the MC then breaking the gate down with a cow to take her away to a party. Which monarchy would allow for zero security. I just stopped halfway through really disappointed of how little thought was used to develop the story and how silly it had gotten.
Great second book of an awesome series. I am very excited to see what happens next for Sam. I love the worldbuilding in the book and the magic system is also very well done. I am excited to read what is next in the book. I highly recommend the book to anyone who likes fantasy.
Sam repeats himself a lot. Like, “They had to succeed at this task. Sam knew that success was needed, and so he focused all his efforts on successfully completing it.” I don’t know if it was a rushed draft or a deliberate choice, but I got very tired of it.
Edit: I gave this a 'second chance' (how delightfully droll!) and it's even worse than I remember. Actual quote, item description omitted for brevity:
"Sam read the stats and was just as amazed as he had been with Klara’s treasure.
"[generic guff about water magic, in bold italic, natch]
"Sam was amazed by the description of Toby’s new piece of equipment."
Now I am two years more cynical I'm thinking, AI? What other process would churn out 800 pages of this? And it's all like this.
The worst written style I wanted to finish the series but could not get past 60% on book 2. It's a tween love romance novel and if that's not bad enough you the author uses so many words that have no reason being in a story like this. Who materializes or de-materializes stuff from their inventory why not put in pull out, you have stuff so close to Christmas and Santa as well as Halloween, cheeseburger and so many others.. I really wanted to give it a try and push past the boring crappy stuff but it just gets worse.
This book was absolutely full of nonsequeter filler, then when it actually got around to plot points, it rushed through them. This book felt flat and even more childish than the first book.
The first installment in this series was pretty good. This one, not so much. This one seemed like it was written for 10 year Olds. Won't be buying the next one.
Sam is the young orphan boy who was chosen by the goddess to save the world from an apocalypse brought about by an attack by the demon King and his horde. He had died in this apocalyptic destruction, however he was given a chance of going back in time to five years before the event, in order to change certain things, using his future knowledge in order to save Westria. So forewarned is being forearmed, and Sam vowed he would do his best not to let his goddess down, and to save those he cared for including his city. He came back as a traveler, part of the traveler’s guild and though still in the lower class of traveler he trained and took up massive challenges in the gates and dungeons in order to better prepare for the forthcoming battles. The first thing he did which changed the timeline was save Queen Alice Grace’s life as the tyrant Clarence Erdstrom had killed her, thus saving his city from tyranny, then he fought to save the mermaids of the Crystal Sea discovering that the cult group the Emissaries of the Fallen were behind the mermaid kidnappings. This is a group Sam and his two friends Klara and Toby would face once again in a massive battle to stop the destruction of the dwarven race up in the snowpeak mountains in what had been known as the dwarven cataclysm in the previous timeline. He came up against the vampire knight Grendle Blackheart and fought for his life to stop what had been known as the Elven Genocide. Sam and his two friends and many other allies from the guild do their best to save Westria, they don’t know why Sam seems to always know what is going to happen but he has proven to be right on so many counts that many are now following his instructions. I love that Sam is so selfless and such a great hero and that Queen Alice Grace might be thawing out in her regard of him. I loved this massive tome of a book, full of jam packed action with beautiful descriptions of the different places visited including the city of Oldestone and I really look forward to joining our young adventurers in their bid to save their world. So onward to book 3!
What a cool book! In this book Sam the MC, knows that in order to fulfill his mission from the Goddess he has to power-up... This can only be accomplished by entering dungeons and doin 'em solo. Also his best friends Klara and Toby are powering up too. And believe it or not as Toby's mage power increases he finds that he can finally let go of his paranoid hypochondriac tendencies. So you're gonna want'a watch Sam go out on solo missions fight some really evil power hungry mercenaries find secret dungeon boss' and you'll need to see if Sam and his team of Travelers can stop the total annihilation of Dwarves. Get the audiobook because Steve Campbell is spot on with a perfectly nuanced performance.
Here's a couple of quotes that amused me:
“Okay, I know I may have cried wolf with those cute merfolk children, but don’t tell me this oncoming horde of angry merfolk is not giving you guys the heebie-jeebies.” “Honestly,” said Klara. “I’m more uncomfortable with the fact that you just used the phrase ‘heebie-jeebies."
"It was a drawing of a bowl of soup with bacon, eggs, and noodles on it along with a cute hamster slurping up a noddle. Above the soup drawing said, “Bacon + Egg + Ramen = My Happy Place.”
Sam has been successful in altering the flow of history, at least a little. The problem is that one change will likely not be enough to change the horrible end that is coming. He needs more allies for that battle against the demon king. The only way to do that is to use his knowledge of history and prevent future atrocities. Unfortunately, that knowledge gets less useful with each change he makes.
The author really stepped up the action in this one! This has certainly been a fun and honestly, pretty lighthearted series, but you probably should be aware if a kid was reading this. As an adult, I’d say it’s incredible and far more realistic. It’s awesome to see that the MC no longer has all of the answers and to see how the two timelines are starting to diverge. Steve Campbell does a great job and was worth the wait for the audio.
Content Warning: more intense violence than previous book. No language/sex.
It has been a while since I came across a series that is really good. I do not expect perfection, but an entertaining read that has a good storyline, good character building and main character and supporting characters that are believable in their behaviors and deeds. This series so far has it and hope it continues as the series continues and the mission itself continues to evolve towards its ultimate conclusion. Please keep up the good work because it is noticed and very much appreciated.🙂
I enjoyed listening to this. It got a good story, action-filled, and tons of fun moments. It's so great to continue the gang's adventure and to see how they have grown and developed their skills. The only thing that's a bit off with me was the chapter breaks. I felt they were kind of awkward.
Steve Campbell did amazing as always! His narration made this even better! Well done, sir!
If I didn’t know better, I would say this is a parody of all of the bad clichés. Arriving with a second left to stop the disaster, or to save his life. Each of the side characters secretly practicing to develop the one skill they would need to save themselves and everybody else at the last second. That’s just the tip of the iceberg with clichés and predictive plot elements.
An interesting tale that resolves strangely but happily. The book focuses on what is happening without going over repercussions; makes for easy reading.
WE GET IT!!! THE DAMN SILVER ARMOR INCREASES HIS POWER WHEN HE ACTIVATES BLOOD RING!! I cannot even begin to fathom how many times the author writes about the armor and pain in this book in regards to the activation of pain ring.
I was asked to read this book in exchange for a honest review. I'll admit I'm a fan of Jakob and this series.
This book is a great combination of action, adventure, and fantasy that doesn't disappoint. The characters are likable and entertaining and the story and pacing are great. I'm interested to see where this series ends out going.
Book 2 was a great action adventure with many significant events and some great levelling, the only minus was that Sam's skills were repeated in detail a bit too often for my comfort. However, this won't stop me from turning each page eagerly on book 3 when it comes out.
Sam continues to gain in power as he prepares himself in his quest to prevent the destruction of the world. He fights to stop catastrophes that contributed to the downfall of the humans and other races in his other timeline. I like the action, humor and a bit of romance. I look forward to the next book.
There were a number of glaring editing and grammatical errors throughout the early chapters of the book. Other than that this book seems to lack depth. There were blatant inconsistencies with the storyline. This is the shallow reflection of the series that the first book promised us.
Same as the first book, nothing changed other than characters are progressing. The crisis of the challenger was great but the stories biggest flaw is the MC going off on his own, those chapter me are boring. The story shines when the sam and his two buds fight together in my opinion. I do love alice, more of her would be great.
Recently I finished my first novel. The Ultimate Glutton System. It’s really bad. You should check it out. From the experience of writing a novel I can definitely say that what the author did here was impressive. It was a masterful take on the comfort read. He managed to make a uniquely optimistic story one that I have never read a book similar too. Very good
Take one time travelling mc, add some dashes of humor, a few slow burning romances. Shoot the mixture through some dungeon gates. Roast over a slow fire adding essence of slaughter and merry making and you'll get a second chance swordsman. A decent adventure that is fairly easy to read.
Continuous battles build power base for our swordsman hero. Super story line. If you want a page Turner that keeps you awake...read volume 1 first.....I have read that Volume 3 times while waiting for this finale.
Jakob has a way of treating 600 pages like 1000 there’s so much packs in this book in a fantastic way. You never feel bogged down or overwhelmed and the pacing is great!
Great follow-up from the first book. I like the direction the author is taking the MC and his group along with the little cliffhanger at the end. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
This is an amazing series! The characters are deep and well thought out. From their mistakes to their triumphs, they are all likeable. You just want to get to know more about them. I can't wait for the next book in this series!
This is good story and fun to read. If your into stories that require some thinking. This isn't for you. If your looking for a fun book to kill sometime at the airport this is it.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was fun and entertaining. The story and characters were interesting and engaging. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what happens next. This book is a must read.
Fun read.Young adult stylings with graphic violence.
Interesting second book, characters are interesting and fun even if they are not terribly beep.Young adult stylings With a fair amount of graphic violence.Enjoyable For what it is.
Pretty good series. I like how it focuses on stat progression. Theres no real problems in the story. Like theres hardships the mc has to deal with. And then he’s successful. But he doesnt really go through any set backs. Theres no real struggle.
