Natalie Grey grew up in rural New England, surrounded by a lot of vegetables and relatively little excitement. Therefore, she was obliged to make up excitement by pretending to be a knight, mage, jet-setting international assassin, jedi, or (occasionally) a shape-shifting dragon. She read everything she could get her hands on, from Lord of the Rings to Modesty Blaise, and eventually started writing her own stories full of what-ifs and snarky put-downs. Now she lives with her two German Shepherd mixes in the frozen wilds of Minnesota, and does a lot of inventive swearing while she shovels.
Paladin By Natalie Grey This is book 4 in the series. This continues Barnabas, the Ranger, a human and vampire, with his ship that is sentient as they are try to protect the weaker and enslaved creatures. Lots of great characters and action.
The Vigilante Chronicles follow one of the oldest vampires from Earth who is partnered with a fairly new AI. Barnabas served the empress as Ranger 1 in the years before they left Earth and continued in that role as the Etheric Empire grew over their first few centuries in space . Now that the empire is no more, the rangers have been resolved leaving Barnabas to find others was he could bring Justice to those who needed it. The first three books of the series were awesome as Barnabas and Shinigami learned to work together (providing has dialog) while chasing down those who were ultimately responsible for criminal activity.
This, the 4th book, is the intensely explosive culmination of the first arc of the series. After destroying the leaders and headquarters of the Yennai Corporation, Barnabas, and those who gave him any assistance, became the targets of Koal Yennai, the psychotic founder and also father of the late leaders of the corporation. But Koal Yennai is much more than that. He is evil incarnate.
Natalie Grey does an awesome job developing the characters of not only the main individuals but also the individual minor characters. As evil as Koal was, there were a few scenes I felt bad for his loss. (very momentarily). Gar had grown to accept the changes of his body in a physical sense but works to accept the changes mentally along with how he feels about where he comes from.
Both Barnabas and Shinigami go through some really intense events that Will keep you glued to the pages for at least the next few chapters! (Warning: don't start reading if you have to be some where in the next hour of 3!) Michael Anderle and Natalie Grey have really out done themselves with this book!
Not just best of the series but also one of the best written in this Kurtherian Gambit Universe. I know this is a series I'll be reading over and over again! It's definitely a keeper, as we use to say when our books were printed!
Can't wait to read what these author's come up with next! Who needs sleep anyway.
There were the usual fight scenes, both of Barnabas taking on multiple opponents - and with Gar's help now that he's had a bit of training - and through Shinigami taking on other space ships and, despite the violence of the fighting, I was able to laugh, at times, with the descriptions of various characters trying, and failing, in their plotting to steal Shinigami, despite their many failures.
I think, for me, it's that humour used throughout these books, which makes me want to come back and read more. It's amazing to me that the characters can be knee deep in blood and gore one minute, but be able to find the humour in life, the next. It's quite a compelling mix!
The last episode, though, had me in stitches!
I'm so loving these Barnabas and Shinigami books, especially as their team is slowly growing, with Gar a fine example, especially, and I can't wait to see what's going to happen next with them all.
Well, according to my reading list, I'm going over to book five of the Ascension Myths: Rebirth, next, before coming back to this series, so I guess I'd better go find the next book!
While the story was vastly entertaining and kept me turning the pages, the author should probably go back and read the rest of the works in TKG Universe before writing her next one.
Pros- -- Great story -- Great character development
Cons- - Lousy attention to cannon --The Empire's AIs were NOT portable. -- Etheric Empire (and thus Etheric Federation) ships AI's and EI's have standing instructions to self-destruct if disabled or captured - the ship she wrote is not the ship the main character was given for these adventures -- The ship he was given did not have a conventional bridge -- The ship he was given had 7 EIs (Jeurgan for Comms, Martina for SigInt, Timo for Operations, Thorston for Gates and Astrogation, and Marions H and K for shields and weapon systems With Shinigami for coordination) -- The ship has Anti-Gravity Technology to offset its maneuverability.
Barnabas is from the Kurtherian Gambit Universe. Barnabas and his crew have destroyed the leader and headquarters of the Yennai Corporation and they become targets of Koal Yennai. Koal is the evil psychotic founder and leader of the corporation. Barnabas and Shinigami go through intense events that will keep you wanting to read more. There is some strong language used in this book. I had the pleasure of meeting the authors at a book signing event and I really enjoyed this amazing fourth novel in the Vigilante Chronicles by Natalie Grey and Michael Anderle. I received this free audiobook version and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Solid 5 star rating! It's amazing watching Barnabas as he continues to learn from his team and grow into something even better. The same goes for Shinigami. Although she's an AI, she has grown so much throughout the series while working with Barnabas. There is always plenty of action with this series and this one didn't disappoint. I loved the book and was sad when I got to the last page but am very pleased to know there will be more to come!
After writing so many reviews for KGU books, I started to think, how can I write them so they are different, but still great reviews? The answer: I can’t! And do you know why? It’s because, the books are all so brilliantly written that makes them hard to put down until the very last word has been read. Michael Anderle, the genius behind KGU, has to be commended on his brilliance of that universe as well as having the balls to pull off such a coupe of inviting so many talented authors to write within it. 10 Stars for you Mr Anderle!!!!!
Shinigami is quickly becoming one of my favorite AIs, and I love the friendship and partnership that she and Barnabas are developing. Meanwhile, Gar and Tafa are slowly becoming greater parts of the team, to everyone’s benefit. As for everyone’s not-so-favorite sociopath? Well, that you’ll have to read to find out. No spoilers, but I promise it’s worth it.
One of the Best Kurtherian Gambit Series books that I've read, and I've read not and re-reading the first series right now. All the New Characters are so well written and engaging. I Love that Shinigami, sorry if I missed spelled it lol, finally got her own Body. Keep up the Great Work Natalie and Michael. You've got me hooked from the first book I read of the Kurtherian Gambit Series.
Great book! Finally got rid of Koel Yennai. That an evil piece of shit he was. It didn't bother him to destroy entire planets, killing every lifeform that lived there. I was so glad when he bit-the-dust.
And I love Barnabas and Shinigami, who now has a body. And I also like Barnabas's little team: Gar, Jeltor and Tafa. They're a wonderful group.
No romance but the F-bomb was used 16 times.
As for the narration: Phenomenal listening to Chris Andrew Ciulla.
Barnabas is one of my favorite characters and this series really does him justice. The story lines are very well written, mixing humor with great fight scenes and interesting bad guys. I am really looking forward to more stories with Barnabas and his crew.
Barnabas and team are zeroing in on the remainder of the Yennai Corporation to eliminate Joel Yennai, evil incarnate. I like the action, humor, and snarky dialogue. The characters jell nicely. Even some of their enemies provide good comic relief. The story is well written. I look forward to the next book.
This was a fun read, nice short series with an AI that is a primary protagonist. Decent mix of action and dialog, story moves along sharply, character development was strong enough that, after a few chapters, they seemed real. Decent finish too, everything tied up nicely in a bow. I enjoyed it a great deal. I read it rather fast though, was really hard to put down.
Wow! I don’t know how Natalie & Michael do it, but this series just gets better & better! Just when you don’t think it CAN get better... THIS book comes out! Don’t expect to get ant sleep until you finish it!!
I loved the Kurtherian Gambit books form the start of Death Becomes Her, and they continue exceeding expectations. Lots of action, lots of laughs, some sad stuff to balance, and lots of learning. Bring on the next arc!
Loved it. So much action and excitement. Some unexpected twists and turns with the Jotun Senate and Navy. Surprising thoughts from a crazy person. Lots of entertainment.
More more more. Just need some new bad guys. If you like snarky character's, big battles and a big universe to explore read these books. Sadly over to soon, I can't wait for the next installment.
This is a great ending to this group of vigilante justice. Can't wait for the next one. I hope Barnabes and Shinighami continue. Plus, how can you not want Shinighami get used to her new body?
Another great Barnabas and crew book! They just keep getting better and better! I love that Natalie is writing these books, she is so very good at it! She and Michael Anderle make a great team!
As with all battles it’s not all about winning there are some failures to enable you to grow and learn for the future. There is also a well deserved surprise for Shinigami at the end.
The entire Kurtherian Gambit series, through these books, are a feast filled up by an incredibly creative imagination! They will make you laugh, get tense, and maybe even cry. You don't know what is going to happen when you turn the page, and I love that! 🐝✋🐺
I love the KGU as a whole but withing it this series is one of my favorite. The banter between Barnabas and Shingami is great. Can't wait for the next one!
I love barnabas and shinigami! Natalie Grey and Michael Anderle did a fantastic job with this book. I cant wait to see what happens next in the series.
