Rate this book
USA TODAY NATIONAL BESTSELLER
Foreword by Amy Schumer

Child development expert and author of How Toddlers Thrive, Dr. Tovah Klein gives parents the confidence they need to help children and teens build resilience and flourish in an unpredictable world.

Whether it’s national or global events affecting our sense of safety or stressors in our day-to-day lives, we are constantly confronted with situations that threaten the wellbeing of our children. Thankfully, there is good news that has not yet been reflected in the headlines: we can mitigate the effect of such rampant uncertainty by guiding our children to manage adversity and make them more resilient. The key is parental involvement.

Raising Resilience is a lifeline for every family contending with life’s many stresses and traumas—from the most commonplace to the most devastating—including peer conflicts, divorce, family tensions, death, moving, academic struggles, and larger personal and national events. Through her years of experience and ongoing research, developmental psychologist Dr. Tovah Klein offers parents and caregivers five specific resources that children can develop, enabling them to face adversity, adjust, and thrive where they might otherwise falter or fall under pressure.

Dr. Klein has devoted her professional life to helping children flourish by supporting them to build the inner tools to deal with devastating events and everyday stressors. Using clinical data and building on evidence-based interventions to offset and heal from traumatic events, she shares a five-point plan with actionable strategies, illustrative stories, and conversation prompts so parents can guide their children to become resourceful, adaptive, and able to grow and flourish now and into the future.

Wise and hopeful, this essential guide empowers parents and caregivers with practical guidance for instilling in their children the emotional intelligence, cognitive flexibility, and social know-how they need to manage life’s challenges and create a lasting capacity for meaningful, happy lives. Accessible, compassionate, and authoritative, Raising Resilience is a timely resource that shows parents how they can confidently build strong relationships with their children and raise them to be motivated, self-assured, and kind—all of which are qualities desperately needed in our ever-changing world.

Although my children are now young adults, this book caught my eye as an educator. Dr. Klein’s five pillars that contribute to a resilient child are so incredibly accurate and described clearly. Both as a parent and a teacher I see so much of this in action. I love how she talks about looking inward in order to help us better parent. I found her suggestions crystal clear, and laden with anecdotal stories to personify her points.

If you are a parent of a child of any age, this is a great read. Never too late to learn more about parenting.

Post pandemic parenting is daunting and overwhelming. This is the first parenting book I’ve read in a while that both gave sound helpful advice and confidence that I am actually doing a good job as a parent. As I read this book (200 pages), Dr. Klein’s 5 pillars felt current and tangible to my family and parenting world. She challenged me to look within and see myself on my journey in order to stay connected with my kids.

I am a parent of a 4 and 8 year who has worked hard to stay up to date in the parenting world. I feel like I am constantly inundated by the most current parenting trends or research. These sound bites tell me I am not parenting correctly during a tantrum or that recent data on the youth mental health crisis and cellphone use is a sign of a bleak future. I am so excited to have access to a current book focusing on resiliency and what I can focus on now while parenting young children!

Dr. Klein skips the top down parenting approach and acknowledges there is no exact recipe to untangle a tantrum, but rather provides a foundation for parents and then a map of how best to approach it based on what needs their children have in the moment. She shares a wealth of information on research to back up her five pillars and most importantly ties these approaches to knowing ourselves better (how we react in the moment and what weight we carry from our own childhood life shaping experiences that is hindering the most effective reminder in the moment).

Bottom line: Read this book. It is an easy and relatable read that might just leave you with some takeaways that help you feel a little less overwhelmed with parenting.

Another addition to my parenting manuals! Tovah’s first book still sits on my bedside table for quick reference when I feel completely lost and this new book will carry me into the next 15 years of parenting! Tovah’s books are never a 1x read, I will be reading sections of this 1000x. I’ve already reread sections because they really leave me thinking! Highly recommend!

I recently read Raising Resilience by Dr. Tovah Klein, and it’s been a total game-changer for me as a parent. Dr. Klein’s five-pillar plan is super practical and easy to follow. She talks about giving emotional support, encouraging flexible thinking, building social skills, teaching problem-solving, and helping kids manage their emotions.

What I loved most is how relatable and down-to-earth her advice is. I’ve started using her tips at home, like creating a more supportive environment and helping my kids think creatively. Dr. Klein’s writing is warm and easy to understand, making it feel like you’re getting advice from a friend.

If you’re looking for a book that offers real, actionable strategies to help your kids thrive, this is it.

Highly recommend!

Finished it, but would not recommend. Didn't agree with all of the strategies listed in this book, and even the ones I could get behind, they weren't revolutionary by any means.

Reading this was equal measures enlightening and uncomfortable. From explaining the science behind child development to how-to’s to integrate into daily interactions with not only young children, but teens; the reading was easy to digest and hopefully easy to integrate.

“Raising a child from baby to adult is in itself a testament to resilience - ours and theirs."

I started reading and promptly whipped out a notebook to start taking notes. Then I spewed all my thoughts at my husband during a lunch date.

The author included questions for parents to reflect on - your own childhood, why you react in certain ways, etc. Effective parenting starts with a good sense of self-awareness. Your child won't calm down if you yourself are not calm. The whole book made me approach parenting in a different way.

So yeah - highly recommend to parents.

A Beacon of Hope for Modern Parenting ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I was profoundly touched by Tovah P. Klein's "Raising Resilience: How to Help Our Children Thrive in Times of Uncertainty." 🌱 As a parent of children across various ages, I found the book to be an invaluable guide in navigating the complex waters of parenting in today's world.

Klein's approach, centered around five pillars of resilience, was not only insightful but also deeply practical. Her wisdom transcends the typical parenting manual, offering a comforting blend of research-backed strategies and heartfelt advice. 📘 The book felt like a compassionate friend, affirming that despite the chaotic backdrop of modern life, I am indeed equipped to foster resilience in my children.

Highlights from my reading included:

• The recognition of the book as a source of confidence for me as a parent feeling overwhelmed, especially post-pandemic. The reassurance that I am doing a "good job" was incredibly validating. 💪
• The emphasis on self-reflection as a key to better parenting was particularly appreciated. Understanding my reactions and childhood experiences has indeed shaped more effective responses to my children’s needs. 🧘‍♀️
• I loved the actionable steps and mantras provided, like "Err on the side of kindness," which are simple yet profound reminders I can carry into everyday interactions. 💖
• The personal stories and practical examples brought the concepts to life, making the advice feel both attainable and relatable. 📖

This book isn’t just a one-time read; it’s a parenting companion I'll return to time and again. Whether dealing with the aftermath of global crises or everyday challenges like screen time and peer pressure, "Raising Resilience" equips me with tools to not only cope but to help my children thrive.

In summary, "Raising Resilience" is a must-read for any parent seeking to nurture strength and flexibility in their children. It’s a comforting, empowering, and highly recommended guide that left me feeling less alone in my parenting journey. A heartfelt thank you to Tovah P. Klein for this beacon of hope. 🌟📚

How can we create a better world? Believe it or not this book is the answer.

What does it mean to prepare the little people in our life to live boldly and bravely while finding love and meaning in life as much as is possible?

As both a parent and a high school teacher for over 20 years, I believe this book is a MUST read for every single parent. It helped remind me that my role as a parent is not just to protect my child, but to build my kids’ emotional, intellectual, and social capacity. Tovah Klein is brilliant at translating the complex realities of physiological and neurological development into concrete, grounded, and loving suggestions for parents of children at any age. Her first book, How Toddlers Thrive, provided essential and accessible strategies for managing the bewildering and wondrous moments of growth that every child goes through during the toddler years. She offered routines, rituals, and specific phrases that could help any parent have more insight and confidence when raising their young child. In Raising Resilience, Tovah helps us both understand our children and ourselves in a productive and loving way so that we can cultivate experiences that facilitate authentic individualized growth in our children. Drawing from fascinating and reliable research, Tovah not only reassures every parent that “they got this,” but also de-mystifies and makes accessible daily, practical, specific choices that any parent can make or start today – whether you child is 7 or 17. Tovah provides a clear framework on how to help children become healthy, resilient, and thoughtful individuals.

We live today in a world of uncertainty, division, and overstimulation. Tovah helps you to slow down, be aware of who you are and your own baggage so that you can make deliberate and intentional choices about how you interact with your children. I cannot recommend this book enough. I truly believe the world would be a different place if every parent had this as one of their main reference books and guides.

A Must Read for ALL Parents!

As a family of four, we lived through Covid in a cramped two-bedroom apartment with no outdoor space, in the middle of Manhattan, in the epicenter of the pandemic in the USA. It was particularly hard to see my oldest child zoom into classes and see peers living through the pandemic in their country homes surrounded by dogs, or in one case horses, with yawning acres of space. The guilt I felt as a parent during that time was almost physical. Every day I felt like I was failing my kids.

In Raising Resilience, Tovah reached through the pages of her incredible book, put a hand on each of my shoulders, looked me in the eyes and said “you are the core of your children’s resilience.” As I read this book, I felt the weight of guilt evaporate. Tovah’s book is filled with a lifetime of experience, wisdom and practical advice. It gives me practical steps to build on the work I now know I have already done to build resilience in my kids – and myself.

Raising Resilience is not just for families who lived through Covid. All children and parents benefit from the skill of resilience, whether it’s from the dangers of new technologies to the age-old consequences of bullying. Raising Resilience is a practical, modern guidebook for all parents, carers and families who want to raise strong, flexible and resilient children.

I cannot recommend this book enough! As a mom of a toddler, tween and a child in between the two, Raising Resilience was relevant to all 3 of my children. I read this book in just two nights because it is so engaging, practical and just generally inspiring. The book almost feels like a big pep talk while providing straightforward, actionable steps to increase resilience in children of all ages. The author, Tovah Klein, covers everything from giving children space, strategies for repairing relationships when they inevitably get off track, helping children through negative emotions and experiences, managing adolescent friendships and social pressure, and avoiding shame in parenting. Throughout the book, Tovah mentions the value of mantras to help parents ground themselves when raising children. So, as I read this book, I made note of a few Tovah-mantras that I plan to carry into my day-to-day: Be reasonable as best you can, celebrate independence and togetherness, "I am listening, can you tell me more?," agency is key for motivation and success, and (my favorite) Err on the side of kindness. This book really is a must read for parents of all ages.

Many of us say, when we become parents, that there should be a manual for what we are embarking on and I totally agree, but while there isn’t a manual, there are definitely many MANY resources out there that can help to guide us on our way through parenthood and after reading this, this books is now at the top of my list of recommendations for parents of the world.

I am definitely a mum who worries at times about what the future will be like for my daughter in this amazing and at times scary world we live in and resilience is high on my priority list to ingrain into her.

As I was reading though Tovah’s advice when being faced with certain situations, I continually was having light bulb moments and moments of awe. It also had me reflecting on my own upbringing, that also of my partner and how we are as parents.

The case studies and research that was shared through out were easy to comprehend and this helps with the tips and advice sticking in my brain for the future.

Thank-you @souvenir_press @netgalley and Tovah for this Digital Advanced Readers Copy, in exchange for an honest review.

I read Tovah's first book, "How Toddlers Thrive" when my girls were young and I loved it, so I couldn't wait to read "Raising Resilience" when it was announced!
Tovah has struck a chord (again) with the fears of parents and the needs of children - so many kids now have anxiety and difficulties when they fail. I appreciate that she's distilled her approach into five pillars of resilience and then goes into detail about each pillar with "reflective questions" at the end of each chapter.
I think this would be an outstanding book for book clubs (especially if your school has a parent book club) and couples should both read it to discuss the reflective questions and make sure their parenting tactics align with one another. Ideally, families living in separate dwellings would also read and agree on approaches to parenting.
Luckily, it's a lively, interesting book to get through with lots of great stories and examples sprinkled throughout to illustrate the pillars that kept me totally focused.

I was a big fan of Dr. Klein’s book “How Toddlers Thrive,” so you can imagine how excited I was to see she was coming out with another book. “How Toddlers Thrive” came to me when I was a new young mom and was worried about everything. Is my little one taking enough? Too much? Sharing appropriately? Responding correctly?…I was a mess and Dr. Klein’s book really helped me learn more about kids, I needed that, I was new at parenting.

Now years later my first babe is a teenager and I have 2 little ones and I’m trying to work it all out and these very different stages of their childhoods. “Raising Resilience” is a great book for all stages. I loved the 5 Pillars and how all 5 can relate to each of my children in different ways. A teenager trusting a parent looks different than a 4 year old, but the core of that pillar is the same. I loved reading about a string between you and your child (freedom), sometimes it’s short and sometimes it’s long & loose. Giving kids some slack to explore and have a bit of freedom is the advice that this (sometimes hovering) mom needed.

This is an accessible, wise, and compassionate guide that can help parents raise resilient kids in today's world. Dr. Klein helps parents navigate uncertainty, whether it's dealing with daily stressors or large-scale crises. She shares practical strategies from her book, from self-talk for stressed parents to sharing difficult truths in age-appropriate ways. Resilience is built over time through everyday experiences and the security provided by loving relationships.

I found it comforting that the strong connection between parents and children can protect them in challenging times. Even during tantrums, there are specific techniques, such as reassuring self-talk, to help navigate challenging moments like "It won't be this way forever." Or "This is a difficult moment, but it will pass." We also learn that resilience is about this relationship and something that's being built every day.

This was a fantastic, approachable resource for getting my 9 & 11 y olds through adolescence and becoming resilient adults. The common theme from Dr. Klein is for parents and caregivers to be present and attuned. Then, examples demonstrating age-appropriate ways to keep it going as our children get older. This book is just a great tool for parents w/kids of any age and is well organized, so it feels more conversational than preachy or like you're not reading for fun.
I began to underline parts that "made a lot of sense", which became more underlined sections than not! The scenarios and solutions presented are enormously helpful; how your child sees you deal with your own emotions, when a child's habits frustrate you, incorporate habits like physical activity and mindfulness, etc. This is definitely going to be a book that I recommend to other parents and give to all of my friends w/kids.

A straightforward, no nonsense book that no only guides you on how to connect with your child but also set boundaries. As a mom of 3 (all in different stages of life), Tovah Klein's words really spoke to me especially in regards to co-regulation which we all need. She gives specific instructions, language and examples on how to help you and your child stay calm/calm down when things become stressful. Important to note that times of uncertainty can be big or small and both affect our ability to function. Finally, one of the aspects of the book I appreciated most was that at the end of each chapter is a short list of reflective questions that relate to the content of the chapter. As someone who is always trying to grow and improve as a parent, this questions really pushed me to turn introspective and dig deeper into why I do what I do and how to do better.

When I heard that Dr. Klein was releasing another book, I was so excited to read it as a follow-up to “How Toddlers Thrive.” Raising Resilience is a must-read for parents of children any age. What I really liked is how easy it is to implement the 5 Pillars of Resilience and the direct tips and examples that she offers. For me, one of my favorite parts was when she explained how important as a parent to learn to regulate. This was definitely an area that I needed help with and while make sense, I did not really think of it or knew how to do that exactly. I also really like how Dr. Klein explains how to discuss difficult topics with children, how much to say, and how to say it. There are so many other helpful tips that I will be implementing in raising my daughter. It is absolutely worth reading if you have kids of any age.

I don't read very many parenting books, but when Tovah Klein writes one, I am first in line to get the book, and she, once again, did not disappoint. Raising Resilience is easy to read yet has the science and the studies woven in to support the advice given. Clear examples are given that you can easily apply to your life and parenting methods. It is impressive how this book works for all ages. As a parent who is already worried about the tween and teen days to come, Tovah's advice on being there as a sounding board and allowing room for our kids to negotiate really struck a chord with me.

This book is essential reading for every parent. After facing unexpected family tragedies shortly after our daughter was born, we prioritized learning how to parent in a way that would equip our children with the skills to handle life’s challenges. This book offers a concrete framework for the abstract goal of raising independent, competent, and compassionate children who will thrive as adults. The thought-provoking questions in each chapter helped me uncover the deeper reasons behind my reactions to stressful parenting situations. Additionally, Dr. Klein has a remarkable ability to educate and inspire positive change without making parents feel guilty or inadequate.

Tovah Klein compiles her vast knowledge of children with sensible every day ideas to incorporate into your parenting in order to help your child thrive. While these may not be "new" techniques, the idea is to think deeper, and understand that many times you need to try a variety of ways to solve the issue. As parents it is easy to get frustrated and want a quick fix but as Klein describes understanding the child is the first thing we must do in order to set them up for success. Also understanding that some failures will happen because the world is, as she mentions-Uncertain. Loved this quick read and also that every parent no matter where you are in social status, location or period in the journey we are all looking to raise resilient kids.

Not a mom yet but I am auntie to (almost) 8 kids and being in the village of raising them under households of faith in Jesus has also meant helping my siblings train up these kids to wonder and worship and express and live authentically. Klein beautifully presents a framework that is accessible, realistic and helpful in helping raise kids who are like the ones Im helping raise: resilient, autonomous and loving. Love her work!

Great book full of parenting gems that will guide parents in raising resilient, independent problem solvers who have the agency to direct their own life path without fear of risk or failure because WE will be right there. Only reason I gave 4 ⭐️ instead of 5 ⭐️ is only because I didn’t feel like there were enough actionable recommendations, more theories for parenting.

I’m not really sure why this book missed the mark for me. I loved the underlying message and the “final reminders” at the end of the book were great. Butttttttt everything about this book just felt unnecessarily wordy and more descriptive without actually stating anything novel/new or interesting research or a compelling story.
