Vaughn Madden, hockey's hotshot, was on a mission to get to know the maid of honor. Knowing she was the little sister of his nemesis on the ice, Briggs Chase. However, he was willing to ignore that detail to make up for the beauty of Isla. Even sober last night, his sickness from the last wedding had him wondering while at his buddy Connor’s wedding to his longtime secret love, Hadley. Vaughn wanted to try and connect with Isla last night, but she had been extremely involved in putting together this wedding. She and Hadley are like sisters.
He knows better than to start anything with her, but he can't get her out of his mind. Being in Lake Sparks for the wedding for such a short time is still a whirlwind. He worried about his curiosity last night at the wedding of his buddy Connor. They were all thrown together for this over-the-top wedding weekend. The last few days have been unreal, considering Connor’s dad is a hockey legend, it’s his Uncle Declan who owns the Spinners, and Connor himself is making waves as a hockey star. Which meant the guest list was nothing less than the best of their league.
Then there is Connor’s teammate who wants to kill him on a normal day. Vaughn guessed it’s fair, as he’d thrown Briggs down in a few scuffles, including a penalty that cost him an important game. Which is why his glare was strong when he was around. So when Briggs leaves the room and Isla goes outside to wrangle Connor’s dog, he starts toward her. Declan stops him and mentions her brother's anger issues when it comes to guys talking with his sister, and for him to imagine the outcome when he finds out it’s him. But he suggested that if he was going to shoot his shot, now was the time since Brigg’s new girl had him occupied.
So he does; he heads out and stands there watching her struggling to dress the dog in an outfit for pictures. He thinks it's cute and just how loyal a friend she is for trying. The two talk and banter, or some might say it was for play. Yet, she shut it down; it could go nowhere within two different states, her brother hated him, and he never dated girls like her. However, she did tell him she would be going to Florida for a conference soon. She, too, works for the hockey team as her brother and Connor ay on. He wanted to exchange numbers, but she said she didn't think that would be a good idea.
Then came the frantic call from Connor asking how bad the hurricane was. He said all indications were that they would be getting the least of it, like a category one. Why? Connor said that Hadley was freaking out because Isla was in a hotel there with no flight out after all due to the grounding of flights. He asked which hotel they told him, and he said not to worry, that one had been retrofitted, and that she should be fine. He told Hadley to give her his number if she needed anything. Instead of waiting around, he went to her.
For their second meet-cute. Only this time around, he said he got a hotel she wanted; she could give up her place and bunk with him. So she does. Partially out of fear, she obeys. They rock each other’s worlds that night to the point of fearful feelings. She made sure to be gone before he woke. Their agreement called for it to be a one-off and no more. Six weeks go by, and before you know it, she hasn’t picked up feminine products in a while. Pregnancy test, here she comes. Will she be or won’t she be?
Here's the thing: she tried to tell him numerous times, but stuff got in the way. Instead, he finds out when she is rushed to the hospital. He is pissed she never said anything to him, and now she is almost ready to deliver. But she did. But two times, it was more important to him to get his rocks off. One other thing, he told her: love, marriage, and children are not for him. Imagine what she’s going through for a half second. Scared, life-altering event, thrilling but terrifying, excited yet worried about how others will perceive their baby. Most of all, she’s terrified her brother will figure out Vaughn is their baby’s dad and harm him before she can even tell him he’s a dad.
Vaughn’s over-the-top, butthurt reaction towards her was out of line. Dude, her vajayjay was more important to you than talking, especially the last time. Yet you made it all her fault. So, how many times exactly did you reach out? Call, stop by, text, anything? Even texting buddies would have been better than nothing.
