One of the most horrifying books about circus I've ever read. I am glad it wasn't the first circus book I'd ever read, or I'd have never read another. It is a dark, scary look into the underworld of a grifting mudshow making its way across the country. Not a pretty picture, extremely graphic, with gratuitous sex and violence not necessarily true to real life. Darryl Ponicsan wrote novels after "living" whatever he was writing about. In this case, Ponicsan traveled with a circus and then embellished and wrote about his experiences. Unless you want to see the ugly side of sad circus, I don't recommend this book.
