Ham Action Thrillers #5

GONE: A Ham Novel

Rate this book
“It’s time for you to go be who you are, or the next time something happens, you won’t be any help to any of us.”

Two months ago, the unthinkable happened. Ham’s family was attacked, pulling her back to the wilds of Idaho from her life on the opposite end of the country. A return trip that saw her do whatever was necessary to protect them, culminating not just with the removal of the threat, but in the destruction of the only home she – or the many young girls who now live there – have ever known.

Forced on the run across state lines, the time since has been spent slowly rebuilding. A process Ham has willingly engaged in, consciously putting the growing restlessness within her at arm’s length. A calling from both the life she had built and the skills she worked so hard to attain.

A second self-imposed exile that ends with her handler reaching out. Contact he wouldn’t normally dare make, if not for the extreme nature of a new case he knew would speak to her personally, paralleling something they both witnessed during their time in the military together.

Seven hundred miles away, a vicious attack known as an annihilation has taken place. A coordinated strike, encompassing three different sites, all aimed at a particular family. Three generations of an agricultural dynasty completely wiped from the earth in a single night.

The event completely upends the small community where they reside and draws Ham into a much different role than what she’s accustomed to. A partnership with local law enforcement that takes her from the small towns dotting the western half of Oregon to the capital city of Portland seeking the people and reasons behind such an attack.

A search that eventually becomes a hunt, at long last letting the true nature kept bottled for months rise back to the surface...

I originally hail from the midwest, growing up in the heart of farm country, and still consider it, along with West Tennessee, my co-home. Between the two, I have a firm belief that football is the greatest of all past-times, sweet tea is really the only acceptable beverage for any occasion, there is not an event on earth that either gym shorts or boots can't be worn to, and that Dairy Queen is the best restaurant on the planet. Further, southern accents are a highly likeable feature on most everybody, English bulldogs sit atop the critter hierarchy, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with a Saturday night spent catfishing at the lake.

Since leaving the midwest I've been to college in New England, grad school in the Rockies, and lived in over a dozen different cities ranging from DC to Honolulu along the way. Each and every one of these experiences has shaped who I am at this point, a fact I hope is expressed in my writing. I have developed enormous affinity for locales and people of every size and shape, and even if I never figure out a way to properly convey them on paper, I am very much grateful for their presence in my life.

To sum it up, I asked a very good friend recently how they would describe me for something like this. Their response: "Plagued by realism and trained by experiences/education to be a pessimist, you somehow remain above all else an active dreamer." While I can't say those are the exact words I would choose, I can't say they're wrong. I travel, live in different places, try new foods, meet all kinds of different people, and above all else stay curious to a fault.

Here's hoping it continues to provide us all with some pretty good stories...

Man, I love me some HAM.

Being Jewish, THAT’S a sentence I never thought would pass these lips.

Of course, I’m not referring to The Other White Meat, but rather to the unique protagonist with that unusual moniker now appearing in her fifth novel, “Gone”, by the preternaturally prolific author Dustin Stevens.

“Gone” is a bit of a departure for the mysterious Ham. Former soldier, former mercenary, now a freelance…contractor, Ham works professionally exclusively for a single source, the equally mysterious Mikey.

He calls, but only with a very specific type of job—one that meets a moral criteria, where well deserved retribution, rescue, or vengeance is required. Then, and only then, is Ham loosed, launched like a heat-seeking missile that can only stop once she reaches her target and goes off; literally and figuratively, destroying it forevermore, never to perpetrate its evil ever again.

With “Gone”, the call originates with a small-town Sheriff. Ham is sent in blind, operating decidedly outside her comfort zone, forced to investigate on her own to determine who is responsible for the appalling, unconscionable crimes that continue even after her arrival.
If you haven’t read any of the four previous novels, you should--not because you need to in order to enjoy this one, but because Ham is truly one of the original characters of this genre.

To barrow a saying, she is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. With a barely hinted at past, including a childhood trauma that left her in the care of a secret refuge for abused women and girls, Ham is taught survival skills that awaken her inner warrior. Honed to a razor’s edge in the military, her moral compass was cemented with her new “family”, her only true allegiance to forever protecting her adopted mother and sisters of the refuge.

Ham is a feminist for the new millennia. Stevens writes and voices her character completely asexually—her biology is irrelevant, except as a weapon to use as she exploits her enemy’s tendency to underestimate her--usually the final mistake they will ever make. She is the complete equal of any man—actually, superior, unless some day she happens upon Jack Reacher…

She is the strong, silent type, communicating mostly in a series of grunts. But if you are a truly bad person, enjoy abusing the innocent or the weak, or really ENJOY inflicting pain on others, there will be no time for conversation. All you’ll see is that wild warrior racing towards you like a runaway locomotive, wide mohawk with the long pony tail flipping wildly behind her, light glinting off the close-shaved sides of her skull, blood spattering off her Combat Tomahawk as it scythes through the air heading straight for your…

Ham cares nothing for her own safety, pain, or even mortality. She will happily die to protect the innocent or to punish the evil. You die, or she will die trying to end you. That simple.

Pain and mayhem are her love language.

Now, how can you not love HAM?

Ham is back! The rebuilding of a new sanctuary in Montana is progressing - but not complete. The initial threat had been eliminated but it is vital to be prepared should another arise. Ham now combines her morning runs with tracking a mountain lion with an up close and personal weapon - a bow.

The call comes and Mickey lays out the grizzly crime that needs grizzly retribution. A reluctant Ham is reminded by Glenda that she needs to keep her unique skills razor sharp if she is called into action to save the family again. The mountain lion is safe, but the bad guys now have nowhere to hide.

Stevens has given fans another full-throttle adventure in Gone. Some new twists and turns challenge his always strong characters. The procedural work is quite well done and readers will gain a new appreciation regarding the details and feel how painfully slow the collection of evidence is - compounded by multiple crime scenes.

Due to her line of work Ham normally avoids any contact with law enforcement, but in Gone normal has left the building. When an Oregon drug cartel launches a hostile takeover of competing gangs the opening bid is an ‘annihilation’ of an entire family. The local county sheriff doesn’t want an arrest - he wants justice. And as he pours out his anger, Ham reassures him, “That’s what I do.” And she does.

Gone is everything you want in a book where, when you jump into it, there is no shallow end. Solid characters and a whiplash plot line this is a great read

This book is the 5th in the Ham series, but you do not need to read all of the previous books in order to follow along, however you are missing out on some great reads, so I do recommend reading the entire series if you like this installment.                                                                                                                    Someone has annihilated an entire family in Oregon, three generations completely wiped out, gone in an instant. Because of the nature of this heinous crime, there is only one person with the skills needed who can get the job done, and that is Ham. Mickey doesn't want to make the call, but he does and when he explains the gruesome details of the case, she understands what she needs to do. Despite the fact that she had just returned home for some much needed R&R, she jumps in with both feet and gets to work.

This story boasts twists, turns, suspense, adrenaline, and heart pumping action, making it hard to put the book down. Ham is such a badass! Strap in for a nail-biting adventure while following Ham on her mission to find and take down the killers and bring justice and to the community.

Mr. Stevens's books are well written, captivating stories, that hold your interest and this one is one of his best!

Wow, Gone is a great addition to the Ham series by Dustin Stevens

Ham has returned home to Montana where her mother and sister live for some long-awaited rest. But soon she gets a call from Mikey, her handler, who mentions an event that occurred in Oregon, seven hundred miles west of her, wherein a family of seven people were simultaneously killed in three different locations. She knows exactly what is responsible: "an annihilator". Shortly thereafter, Ham is off to Oregon to take care of business with which we readers are familiar.

Dustin enthralls the reader with ongoing actions in several locations as Ham tracks down those responsible for the annihilation of the seven-member family.

Heads-up: you should be aware that it will be difficult to stop reading once you start. But it is one thrilling ride you don't want to miss!

Stevens Does It Again!

Gone is the 5th book in the HAM series by Dustin Stevens.
Ham ( Hard As a Mother) is an incredible woman who fights to right the injustices done to innocent people.
She fights without any thought to her own injuries and accomplishes what she sets out to do.
I find this series gripping me from the start. As is typical of Steven's books, this book has twists that you aren't expecting that keep you wanting to find out what will happen next.
I recommend this book, but start at the beginning of the series to best understand what makes Ham the person she is.

Reviewing as an ARC reader…all I can say is WOW! This book was amazing and the pages just kept on turning. Love the introduction of the cat, how she is such a hard case but loves her family. Size and numbers mean nothing to her, she is rather fearless. From the relocated area in Montana to being called to go to Oregon on a case that requires her skill set. Ham hears what her handler has to say and the phrase “annihilator” brings her into the case. She keeps saying that she is not an investigator which adds to the story.

Dustin just keeps the books coming and really there is never a let down…they are all great reads, this one included.

Ham's back in an explosion of action. She'd taken time off to help her family get reestablished in a safe location but she was getting restless in the domesticity. One phone call changed everything. A family annihilated and a Sheriff who is willing to seek a different kind of help to solve this crime.
Ham agrees to help track down the killer or killers but along the way finds there is more to the story than one horrific night of death.
Mr. Stevens always creates a spellbinding, hold-your-breath kind of story that you can't help being swept along to a spectacular ending. You always want another go at it and he delivers, time after time!

3 3/4 Stars: While the plot in this novel is interesting and action packed, overall I felt emotionally disconnected. It might be from knowing just small amounts about the new characters. This novel didn’t feel as smooth as some of his others. What I liked: Ham, her emotions and her physical journey with this job; witnessing Ham’s ability to move through different weapons. What I didn’t like: grammar, spelling, and incorrect usage of adverbs. Where is the editor or copy editor who should be catching all of these mistakes. This book was good but not my favorite. One should definitely read this series in order.

Ham has always been a kick-a**, no B.S. kind of gal, looking for reasons to immediately administer justice without prejudice to those who wrong the innocent. This time, after being out of action for a while, she takes on the initial role of detective to figure out who the bad guys are. It's a slow, suspenseful lead up to the inevitable - the annihilators get what's due them in the end. That's what matters most, after all!

Definitely another fabulous chapter in the series worth checking out. I'm curious to see where Stevens takes Ham next.

‘Gone’ is more than a thrill ride through the pages & and Ham is so much more than a character in a book. Ham is… hard to explain. As a reader Ham is a truly uplifting character but not in a fairytale princess way, Ham is uplifting in her drive to protect the innocent no matter the cost to herself.
I have loved every Ham story and Gone is no exception, it’s a wonderfully suspenseful story that kept me right on the edge of my seat from the first page.
Gone is a gripping drama that had me wanting to bit my nails throughout the story.

This is the first book I have read in this series.  Now I am going to go back and see how it all began.   You can read this as a stand alone but I think it would be an even better read if you read then in order to learn all the history.

Ham is an incredible woman.  In this tale she has to try her hand at being an investigator which is not her usual style.  She is a protector of the innocent in a warrior like way.

There is lots of suspense,  action,  and character development to keep you turning the pages.   If this is your thing than this book is a must read!

Loved it!

I literally could not put it down and spent the day reading it. There are a number of tough female protagonists to collow, but Ham is unique. She enjoys killing - heck, and seems to need it to let her rage out. At the same ti.s, she sees herself as a protector who just happens to be a mercenary. Strong recommendation - if you haven't already, start with the first in the series and just keep reading (this is a series that completely justifies the expense of Kindle Unlimitex). You'll be glad you did.

Back at it....

When her time with Glenda and the girls ends with a phone call, HAM is back in her element once more. As she goes about trying to play investigator, which she hates, to seeking revenge for the actions of one man, she starts to feel like herself again. As hard as I tried to read it slow.... I failed.... I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. As with all books by this author, I highly recommend it.

It takes a predator to catch a predator. So you need Ham. This is a good book, but not for the feint of heart. It’s bloody and gory. Pretty dark at points. And that’s what makes it so good. There is still A LOT of narrative. I get it. If we learn all that’s inside of Ham’s head we get to hear everyone else too. But I can go without pages of it. Honestly some of it I skim. But the story is compelling. It’s a page turner for sure.

Ham is back! Her handler calls her as she is helping at the Sanctuary in Montana to send her to on job where 3 generations of a family have been killed. The local sheriff wants someone who will go beyond the law to make the killers pay! A job right up Ham’s alley. But what a job, more people start showing up dead, by the same killers, but how are the cases related? This book is a ride you won’t forget!!!

I have read books by Dustin Stevens and have thoroughly enjoyed them. This is my first book to read with HAM as the main character.
I have to admit this book was VERY graphic and in my personal opinion went “on and on”with Ham’s attack. The very first scene was horrific to begin with. I had no idea that it would be even more graphic.
As much as I enjoy Dustin Stevens I don’t think I will follow HAM . This book was violence for me.

Good, But Not My Favorite

I’ve read this entire series but this one is not my favorite.

The lengthy descriptions of weapons and internal dialogue was exhausting, which added excessive words to the story. The story became laborious and dragged on unnecessarily. Some chapters could have been eliminated (ex: chapter 36) without the loss of context or flow.

In any event, I finished the book but didn’t find it as enjoyable as the others.

This was absolutely awesome my favorite book yet!!! This was a roller coaster ride of a story that kept me on the edge of my seat. I absolutely love shadow and HAM is something else!! I love the home for the girls and all that that implies. I hope they're going to be more stories with these characters.

Dustin has done it again! Ham is called away from home to rectify a situation that requires her skills. She walks into a total disaster after a family was murdered. Her goal was to find the killer. This book is full of unexpected surprises and danger for which Ham is determined to overcome all obstacles. Great book!

Ham is evolving and becoming more perhaps human. She is looking at life and family in a different way, but is still the same badass if you get on her wrong side. I enjoyed the story and the fact that she could identify with the whole town and it's residents and finish her task to fulfill all their wishes.
Enjoyed it and look forward to more Ham on my plate. Sorry could not resist!!

Another winner for Ham

This fast-paced thriller has a complex plot and a mission which seems too much for Ham. No spoilers here, but GONE has tons of action, strategy, and revenge. I appreciate Ham and her unique skill set. She’s a strong woman with a clear sense of right and wrong, along with some tenderness and humor. Great read!

GREAT book! I love this character so much and this book has the most intense storyline I think, of all the Ham books.

While it’s not necessary to read them in order, if you start with this and find Ham a bit odd, please go back and read the first book in the series. You will come to love her as much as the rest of us do.

I’ve enjoyed all of the Ham series and Gone takes her to a new level. Being away from her familiar surroundings, voluntarily working with law enforcement and doing some investigation work adds stress to what she wants and needs to accomplish her task. It’s a great novel filled with a lot of action and suspense.

wordy

Good story line as usual, but this novel was way too wordy, detracting from the story in my opinion, distracting me, causing me to skip lines just to get past the words. Lots of unnecessary descriptive sentences, even paragraphs. I hope Mr. Stevens continues with the Ham books and I’m looking forward to the next. Hopefully not as wordy.

Knives, guns, machine guns, and a tomahawk

A salt of the earth farming family, every family member annihilated in one night. Three murdering animals (human?), and one giant ass that sets everything in motion! A call goes out to a woman named Ham. Can she figure out who is calling the shots before anymore good guys go down?

Ham is the one person you want to have your back. The one person whom you want to befriend because anything else will put you where you don't want to go. She is every bad guy's nightmare. She rocks. Leaves You Breathless. Highly recommended.

Ham is back, and it's an action-packed week of tracking down an annihilator.
Someone killed an entire family, just wiped them out. That made the sheriff angry and, in turn, infuriated Ham. So off she goes to track down these merciless aholes.
Another hit from Stevens.

An entire family at three locations are all killed, including a pregnant woman and the dog. Ham is asked to take care of the murderers and not have them spent time in prison. Ham takes care of business in her way. Another Ham novel that is hard to put down.
