Haunted Souls #12

Ghost of an Image

Rate this book
A long-held family secret is coming for Copeland Forbes. With a vengeance.

Still aching at the loss of countless family artifacts after his mother’s death a decade ago, Cope is shocked to see one of them, the mysterious Orpheus Box—along with a sepia photograph of two men, one a dead ringer for Cope—as the prized feature of an exhibit on Victorian Spirit Photography.

Before her death, Cope’s mother had warned him the box must never be opened, but Jude and Cope are too late to prevent disaster. With a flurry of chaos and magic, an earthquake plunges the gallery into darkness, and when the lights come back on, Cope finds himself face to face with his long-lost ancestor. The man in the photograph.

In a desperate bid to keep his family safe more than one hundred and fifty years ago, Camden Forbes trapped himself and his half-brother, Orpheus, in a complicated and dangerous spell. It should have remained intact forever, had the secret not been discovered by a mysterious puppet master who wants Orpheus’s secrets for his own nefarious purposes.

Cope knows it’s only a matter of time before the bodies start dropping. Can the Forbes men solve the mystery and find Orpheus before he kills again, or will Cope and Camden pay the ultimate price?

Good mystery book...

Well, not really a mystery, maybe a family drama? Either way, it was good enough.

Also, I did not read the 11 books before this, because the blurb on goodreads didn't mention one had to.

Spoilers are ahead so be warned.

In here we gave Cope, a witch and Jude, a guy who hates witches. They are married with a son when suddenly Cope's great great great great grandfather and uncle show up after being trapped in a photograph.

Come to find out, Camden trapped both himself and his brother because his brother was more powerful, had killed others, and did not treat him well at all.

I know that we were supposed to be all heart felt for Camden the grandfather, but honestly, I felt horrible for Orpheus the uncle. His mother was a slave and his father was the slave owner who never recognized him as his child, even though he had more power than any of his other kids. His father also killed his mother when he found out she deliberately did not have more kids because of how he treated his son. He also wasn't freed from being a slave until way later. Which means the only slave in the story was basically forced to be the evil guy in this book. These white? I assume since I do not remember any of the 500 characters descriptions, were talking about having to put him down like a rabid animal. Really? No one pointed out that maybe this needed to be tweaked to not sound uh bad before publishing?

The ending was not great, but since this was not really a romance, more like it was a story that just happened to have gay characters, I accepted it. I hate it when one person in a relationship decides to put away and try to forget a part of themselves. A real partner would have fought that decision, but since Jude hated witches, he was happy with it.

Also, this book had 2 cheek kisses, one passionate kiss because of jealousy, a bj was mentioned but not done, and that was it. There was nothing else going on.

Did I enjoy this story? Of course, I did... Ms. Pine wrote it! Did I think that this story lived up to its potential? Actually, NO! There was just something more that I wanted from Orpheus that we weren't given. Camden also fell short of the mark... maybe it was just me, but I wanted MORE! OK, I know I think like a girl and expect the world to be all happy and flowers everywhere, but I would have liked to have seen this issue resolved with more hugs and back pats... and conversation? I know, it's a lot to ask from some guys, especially two from a hundred years ago, but Orpheus intrigued me... *grin*

As always, the kids ruled and Everly was amazing... love those kids! We need more... oh, right, one more is on the way and will be here VERY shortly... if the book EVER comes out! *sigh* LOL!!!

I usually enjoy this series but with this book I thought the story was lacking, much more could have been made of Orpheus and the ending was a bit of a damp squib.

When Cope's mother died, his father got rid of everything he could get his hands on, this included the mysterious Orpheus Box. They get invited to a gala night at the Peabody Essex Museum where he finds out that Victorian Spirit Photography has the box as the prized feature. Before his mother died, she told him that the box must never be opened but after someone does on stage he ends up staring at his long-lost ancestor, one of the men in a sepia photography shown in the exhibit. With a flurry of chaos and magic, an earthquake plunges the gallery into darkness, and they take this opportunity to escape. Now Cope has to decrypter and reveal part of his family history to know how to deal with his ancestor Orpheus who shouldn't have seen the light of day ever again.

I didn't hate it, but I feel like it had a lot of potential. I feel like there was more to be explored, I know that by having a million characters it gets complicated to delve into their stories when you have already an MC plot, but it has been bothering me a bit that you get a nugget of information that could be incredibly important/relevant/impact a lot of people and you just let it slide.

Still, Cope and Jude are my favorites from this universe so reading about them is a treat I'll never deny myself.

Another outing for Copeland and Jude, this time bringing Copeland's family legacy and relatives into the mix. Murder, bad blood and a man from the 1800's has the whole team alert as Copeland has history revealed to him that he had no idea about. Two uncles who were caught in a photo lens are now released in the present day but no one is any the wiser as to how or why and it's up to the Cold Case Psychic crew to figure it out before one of them gets their revenge.
It's an intriguing mystery with drips of information fed to the characters and reader as we go through the story. There's possible danger towards the children which always then has Copeland, Jude, Ronan and Tennyson on alert. Evelyn, especially, with her powers manifesting as they are but Wolfie is just as adorable. Orpheus is perfect as the villain of the story but he's not the only one that cannot be trusted here, and Camden is someone that grows on you as he tried to do what's best and now gets time with the family he has left, at least 150 years late.
There's a lot of tension running throughout this book and justifiably so, never knowing what's possible or is coming next. My one thing about this story compared to others was that the final hurrah was a fair bit more softer than I was expecting, given the build up and anger felt coming from Orpheus. But, it's still a great story, filled with love and support of the found family this series and Cold Case Psychic has produced, and we're still learning things about characters that we've known for many books now.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

I love Cope and Jude and this story was fantastic! Cope and Jude receive an invitation to the Peabody Essex Museum for an exhibit of Victorian Spirit Photography and are shocked to see the Orpheus box that Cope thought had been lost after his mother died and his father had gotten rid of most of her things connected to witchcraft and a photo of a man who looks exactly like him. He knows the box should not be opened and he shouts to the director to not open it but no one seems to hear him and then the assistant opens it and deliberately drops the glass plate and it shatters. Camden and his half-brother who had been trapped in the glass photograph since 1861 are released. You learn that Camden had done it because he knew that Orpheus was a very dangerous witch and voodoo practitioner who killed to obtain more power. I ended up liking Camden even though his fOailure to include his half-brother in the inheritance and the Devereaux coven led to his murderous ways but he knew he had been wrong. I enjoyed when Onyx Kerr came up from New Orleans to help and I loved how both Orpheus and Camden were to able to go into the light.

More Adventures With Jude And Cope

Being a 5th generation legacy witch has helped Copeland Forbes resolve a while bunch of situations with his husband, Jude Byrne in the Haunted Souls series (I can't believe this is book 12!), but what happens when being the last in the Devereux line of witches *is* the situation?witches

I absolutely love these guys and the rest of the Salem family. Everything that makes them wonderful is right here...found family, loyalty, love in all its shapes and sizes - between partners, between parents and children, and the brilliant brotherly bond between Jude and Ronan.

The mystery Cope and Jude have to solve with the gang's help is an intriguing one...clever plotting, with lots of jeopardy and threat. Humour from Ronan and Jude brings the balance. It's hard to think of many author's who can write so many books in a shared universe - Ghost Of An Image isn't just the 12th book in this series, it's book 50 overall!! - and keep it feeling so fresh and looking forward to whatever the gang are going to face next; whether that's a paranormal challenge or a family drama. It's Ronan and Tennyson up next...and I can't wait!! 5*

Copeland's Pandora's Box

When a family heirloom is purchased by a museum Copeland Forbes has no idea it is the beginning of a nightmare. The mysterious Orpheus Box—along with a sepia photograph of two men, one a dead ringer for Cope—is the prized feature of an exhibit on Victorian Spirit Photography.

Before her death, Cope’s mother Elizabeth Devereaux Forbes had warned him the box must never be opened. That he must protect it with his life if necessary. But someone at the museum has a different agenda. An agenda that leaves Cope face to face with his long-lost ancestor. The man in the photograph.

Camden Forbes trapped himself and his half-brother, Orpheus, in a dangerous spell, to protect his family and the wider world at large. Now Orpheus a powerful witch and Voodoo King is free with an agenda of his own.

Cope with help from his friends and family must find a way to persuade Orpheus to go into the light, or kill him. Before Cope and Camden pay the ultimate price?

I loved this Free Kindle Unlimited book in the Haunted Souls series which gives us more insight into both Cope's and Onyx past.

This series just keeps getting better!

I honestly can't understand how or where Pandora keeps getting these brilliant ideas for stories but I am here for every single one! I love all the characters in this series as well as the Cold Case Psychic series. I have been here from the first book, and I'll be here when/if these series ever end. I personally hope they don't lol.

In this book we get to jump into the past that's thrown into the present and learn more about Cope and his "witchy" side of the family...sounds good doesn't it! There is murder, mayhem, mystery and of course a whole lot of love and family which makes these books ones that keep you hooked and ones that you come back to time and time again. I really don't want to spoil this book for anyone so all I will say that you need to read this book and if you haven't started this series, what are you waiting for?!, I absolutely recommend reading it!

I loved this addition to the West Side Magick world. This book featured Jude and Cope and some of Copeland's long past family. Or maybe not as gone and passed as they should have been. I felt awful for Orpheus from the prologue, and didn't know just how bad he was. My initial impression of Camden was more negative. When we came around to present day impressions change and you saw just who was the good and who was the bad. I loved catching up with the characters in this world. This story strung a crazy mystery and tale. I am dying for the next book and for Everly's little brother to finally arrive. The stories in this whole world are excellent. This is no exception. The story really had no heat and was more a mystery and magical tale than a traditional romance, however it is still excellent and well worth your time to check out. I highly recommend it.

I love this author and the way she is able to keep adding to the stories of existing characters while keeping is fresh and interesting. This time, Jude discovers an artifact of his late mother's at a photography exhibit, a dangerous item that must not be opened. But he and Jude are too late to stop its opening, and thus begins a battle to put the evil back in the box, so to speak...and to survive. I loved Cope's ancestor Camden and the sacrifice he made in the past to keep his family safe. This book is full of suspense, surprises, drama, and some humor as well. So good to see Cope and Jude and their family and friends again.

I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Family legacies

Once again, Cope has to face specters from his family line, this time thanks to the opening of the Orpheus box previously guarded over by the eldest Deveraux witch but lost after his mother’s death. The best part of the story, as always, is the children plus the greater CCP family pulling together to help each other through the latest trial. I don’t necessarily agree with how things wrapped up (I think Orpheus should have faced appropriate consequences, all things considered), but the story is very good even if it lacks the usual steam seen from Jude and Cope. Definitely some surprises to be found while reading this, especially where Cope is concerned and a nice lead up to Ezra’s birth for Ronan and Tennyson.

I love this series from Pandora. As usual her world building is stellar and character development is off the charts. Of course, these books must be read in order and are not stand alones.
I always love when the Scooby gang comes together to save the day and each other. I'm enjoying the foreshadowing she's doing too. Can't wait to see how these new details all turn out. Jude and Cope are my favorite couple in this universe. I love Ten and Ronan .. but I have a bigger soft spot for Jude and Cope. I loved all the historical details she incorporated into this mystery, as well. 5/5 highly recommend this story and series. Thank you Pandora for writing such great stories. Can't wait for the next books in the series.

Love These Guys 💜

I have read all the books in the Cold Case Psychic and Haunted Souls series and never get tired of all these guys and their psychic / witchy / wizard ways. They are all married now and have children, most with special abilities, but they are still fighting evil and all forms of paranormal activities.

This book was from the Haunted series so whilst all the guys were in the book it centred around the gorgeous Jude and his husband Cope, a very powerful witch. When a couple of Cope’s ancestors make an unscheduled appearance Cope needs the skills of all his chosen family to deal with the chaos.

Always a fun ride!

“La mort du cœur”

This is part of the continuing saga of Haunted Souls book 12 (Cope & Jude).

I loved seeing snippets of some of the Cold Case Psychic guys again. The found family, they are all a part of, is a fun dynamic.

If you're looking for a sweet sexy book with lots of loving, this is not it. In fact, I don't believe there was any sex in this book. This book was a race against time to get the evil guy before he got them.

I wish Onyx had a more prominent part in this story, I'm ready to find out more about him. Pandora keeps teasing us with his presence.

What's next up in this series??? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I have been living in Pandora Pine's Salem universe for a few years now and it never gets old. Normally series and offshoots tend to get stale and repetitive over time. I have been with Jude and Cope through a rocky meeting, falling in love and becoming fathers. This story digs into Cope's background. A misplaced family heirloom brings back his Great X4 grandfather and Great uncle. He is given a chance to find out more about his background and to help heal long past damage. I love the ongoing themes of family that is woven through the entire world and the characters are written so well that they feel like old friends.

More family drama for Copeland

This book gives us more of Copeland’s family history after a bizarre incident brings back some of his ancestors. It’s kind of a strange story and there is a build up to a potentially awful ending but for some reason that is never addressed in the climactic scene. It seems like there was suddenly a rush to the end. The ending is a bit weird but there is a fun scene between Everly and Jude.

The predicament the book brings up is an interesting moral one that certainly causes the reader to think.

There were quite a few editing errors in this book which I usually don’t see from this author. Definitely needs better proofreading/sharper editors.

When the Pandora's box of the Devereaux family turns up in a museum in Salem and gets opened a Civil War era spell is broken and puts the entire found family of the Magick Shop at risk. The theme of what you would do to protect your family and loved ones is threaded through the mystery of how to put evil back when someone lets it loose.
Couldn't put this book down. I absolutely love Cope and Jude and this has to be their best story yet. The ending is a bit bittersweet. But once again, love and family save the day.

The past comes calling

I love Copeland and Jude and the entire found family they represent. Every book just cements that. This book has some bittersweet parts to it but it was good. I notice Jude still has issues with witches but he has come a long way in his automatic distrust of witches. They all struggled a bit with the implications of the events of this book, but Cope most of all. This is a really good installment to this series. The Devereaux legacy is a heavy burden to bear.

Fasten your seatbelts and get ready for the ride of your life as you delve into Cope’s family history. A blast from the past in the form of two ancestors from 160 years ago appear and start causing truths to be revealed. A battle to come has the friends and partners doing everything to keep the families safe. You will love this book and it was impossible to put down until the very end. I loved the care and concern demonstrated by and for each other and how united they could overcome anything. A most enjoyable read!

The past comes calling…

These are always quick reads for me. I enjoy seeing how Cope and Jude handle a crisis and how all the extended family chip in to help. I know they all believe in second chances and even sometimes a 3rd or 4th…but for once I’d kinda like to eye the bad guy not go into the light and be reunited with his family. Orpheus was evil and a serial killer, he had no morals or remorse. Oh well, it all ended well for everyone else tho so it’s all good. I can’t wait to see when Everly’s premonition for Wolf, Jude, and Cope comes true!!

Two of my favorite characters of this author have a new story and a new ghost to battle. Cope is dragged into a mystery from his mother's side of the family and his husband, Jude, and our favorite team of psychics and cops join in to help them solve it and protect their loved ones. How do you solve the mystery of a family member showing up from the dead? Gather up all the witches you know and put your spell on. Another page turner for our group of mystery solving psychics.

Wow. Just wow. Cope and Jude were invited to the museum for a surprise reveal. When everything was done, there stood Cope’s great-great-great-great grandfather. Camden placed himself and his half brother in a glass to protect everyone. I love this series and there is always great adventures that await these guys. I cannot wait to see what happens next.

With plot elements like Cope's family version of Pandora's box and an ancestor who sacrificed himself to send an evil brother, Orpheus, to something like the Phantom Zone, Cope and said ancestor Camden must work together using all their combined smarts and skills to prevent Orpheus from bringing death and destruction to the world again. Loved getting more insight into Cope's background and family.

Maybe it’s me, but I was expecting this to be another mystery, but it’s more of a Family Drama involving two of Cope’s ancestors from the 1800 brought into current times. The wrap up was a little to easy for me. It was enjoyable enough, but it is probably my least favorite in the Haunted Souls series thus far.

I've enjoyed this series a great deal. I'm always, happy to read more about the gang. The mystery in this one was interesting. However, I was expecting more where the character of Orpheous was concerned, I personally don't think that Ms Pine developed it enough. Still, it's always good to catch up with Cope, Jude, Ronan, Tennyson etc. I've kinda grown fond of them all. 3.5 stars.
