A True Delight

Upon reading the book description, I'm embarrassed to say that I came away with preconceived notions about how the story would play out as well as preconceived notions about Adam. With the description of his strict standards and formal disposition, I thought that for sure I would have some not so kind feelings about him. And that is the great thing about how author Patricia Johns tells a story. You might start out with something in mind, but then she takes you on a journey that makes you rethink things.

Such was the case with Adam. Once I got to know him, I discovered the why behind his ways. I came to like him and felt compassion and understanding for him especially with all he'd been through. The funny thing is that in contrast, while I liked Verna, I also saw a side of her that had me shaking my head. Yes, she quickly fell into being a great wife and mother, but she also had what I would call some "Adamisms" in her which added a special twist to the story. It was truly a joy to see how these two began to discover each other, even when butting heads, and to see where those discoveries took them. Needless to say, little "Miss Mandy" added much to the story making it a true delight to read and a book that I highly recommend.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book. All comments and opinions are voluntary and completely my own.

I love reading sweet, heartwarming Amish stories, and Angel Amish Mother for His Child, by Patricia Johns, does not disappoint. Patricia is able to take a skein of words and knit them together to form something special.
Verna Kauffman is kind, caring, loves God (“Gott”), loves children, and counts it a joy to teach Englishers to knit. Adam Lantz is a widower with a young daughter, and is a man with many rules but little leeway. The desire of Verna’s heart is a home with a husband and children. Adam wants a woman who will be a mother for his child. So starts the marriage between Verna and Adam. It’s one of convenience, that’s it, for him. She’s at least got some hope to build a future with him. Is it possible for the very different life paths these two are forging to somehow come along into one trail they can travel…together? With the Lord on their side, anything is possible! Plus you know I get so happy when there is an epilogue…yay!
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but my opinion is entirely my own.

Description in my words …
» Adam Lantz is looking for the ideal & proper (I think he really meant perfect) Amish woman to be a mother to his child.
» Community matchmaker, Adel Knussli, had set up the marriage of two strangers.
» Verna Kauffman, age 30, wanted a family & was willing to marry Adel’s chosen man for her.

Verna learns after the marriage Adam’s childcare rules. Plus, his strict standards on almost everything. And that his demeanor was very, VERY formal. Can these two create a home for the little girl? A home for both adults which has a comfortable atmosphere. A loving home?

My review …
Okay, Adam’s childcare list is a hoot and for the most part ridiculous. None will be listed because doing so would give away some of the best chuckles you’ll have — especially if you are a parent. Oh, I doubt Adel had any idea about Adam’s requirement of a “proper Amish woman with Amish pedigree”. If she had, most likely there would have been no marriage.

Adam is a list maker. So am I but he takes it to a whole new level. I loved the way Verna handles Adam and his lists. The difference between me & Adam? I make lists for ME; Adam makes lists for Verna, his child, etc. etc. I think he would make one for the cows if he could.

One important thing for Verna was continuing her knitting class for troubled teens, Englisher teens. I wondered if this would work in an Amish novel when I first read it. But it does. Beautifully. Trust me, you’ll like it!

You’ll enjoy little 5-year-old Amanda Rebecca (isn’t that a mouth full). Another great scene … Verna has to take Amanda Rebecca with her to the knitting class. I’ll leave to your imagination what Adam thinks when he hears about it.

Don’t think Adam is a tyrant. He isn’t. He can be thoughtful & caring. But he has been hurt in multiple ways over the years and trying the best he knows how to make sure his little girl doesn’t ever EVER go through the same thing. And don’t we parents do the same thing for our children?

That’s it. I don’t want to give you any more clues — just trust me, this is a lovely story. And a five-star read, publish date — 26 Dec 2023. Fourth in the Amish Country Matches but can be read stand alone.

I received a complimentary DRC (digital review copy) of An Amish Mother for His Child via NetGalley from the publisher, HARLEQUIN – Romance (U.S. & Canada), Love Inspired. A positive review was not required; the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

"An Amish Mother for His Child" by Patricia Johns is a heartwarming and tender Amish romance that explores themes of love, loss, and the resilience of the human spirit. Set in the idyllic Amish community, this novel follows the journey of Hannah Stoltzfus as she navigates the complexities of motherhood, grief, and unexpected second chances.

The story unfolds as Hannah, a young widow and mother of two, struggles with the challenges of raising her children alone after the tragic loss of her husband. The burden of grief and the demands of farm life weigh heavily on her shoulders. When her husband's best friend, Isaac Lapp, returns to the community, he becomes a source of support and comfort for Hannah during her difficult times.

One of the novel's strengths lies in its portrayal of the Amish way of life and the strong sense of community. Patricia Johns brings the setting to life with vivid descriptions of the Amish traditions, values, and the close-knit relationships within the community. The authenticity of the cultural details adds depth to the narrative and allows readers to immerse themselves in the characters' world.

The characters, particularly Hannah and Isaac, are well-drawn and relatable. Hannah's struggles with grief and the challenges of being a single mother are portrayed with sensitivity and authenticity. Isaac's own journey of self-discovery and personal growth adds layers to the story. The author skillfully explores the complexities of their evolving relationship, weaving a tale of healing and new beginnings.

The central theme of motherhood is beautifully depicted throughout the novel. Hannah's dedication to her children, the joys, and the sacrifices involved in raising a family are portrayed with emotional resonance. The author delves into the universal themes of resilience, forgiveness, and the transformative power of love, making the story accessible to a wide range of readers.

The pacing of the narrative is steady, allowing the emotional arcs of the characters to unfold naturally. The writing style is engaging, with Johns' prose capturing the simplicity and sincerity of Amish life. The dialogue is authentic, reflecting the characters' values and the nuances of their relationships.

While the novel adheres to the conventions of the Amish romance genre, it distinguishes itself with its nuanced exploration of grief and the characters' emotional journeys. The author avoids clichés, presenting a story that feels genuine and heartfelt. The inclusion of secondary characters enriches the narrative, providing a sense of community and interconnectedness.

"An Amish Mother for His Child" is a touching and emotionally resonant romance that will appeal to readers who enjoy stories of love, faith, and family in an Amish setting. Patricia Johns' skillful storytelling and well-developed characters make this novel a delightful addition to the genre, offering a comforting and uplifting reading experience.

What a difficult situation! Adam’s wife passed away. He has been raising his daughter Amanda Rebecca on his own, but now feels he needs a mother for his daughter and a “proper wife” for himself. Verna is an Amish woman of thirty. The community matchmaker decides they could fulfill each other’s needs and perhaps come to love each other in time. Without much more than meeting each other, the two are united. Adam promises to move from Oregon to Pennsylvania, and they set up housekeeping in a rented house. Amanda Rebecca is a sweet almost five year old, and Verna is so happy to be her new mamm. Likewise, Amanda Rebecca takes to Verna quickly as Verna makes the child feel comfortable with the new relationship.

The couple starts out with separate bedrooms and both work to please the other, but it is hard to get communication going. Adam and his first wife had difficulties with that too, and Adam had several traumas in his childhood that hold him back. Verna is fairly independent for an Amish woman, and she insists as part of their agreement that she will continue to teach court ordered knitting lessons to teenagers. The young people have tattoos, piercings, and good hearts in spite of some bad choices. On most things, however, Verna submits to Adam’s leadership in the family as she wants to please him and have a good marriage.

An Amish Mother for His Child details the struggles and successes they have along the way and one big family crisis that occurs. Will they come to a compromise or have to separate? Will they ever be united by love? This is a good story, and I enjoyed it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

An Amish Mother for His Child by Patricia Johns is a touching Amish tale. Verna Kauffman has longed for a husband and a family. Adam Lantz is a widower with a daughter. A marriage of convenience solves both of their needs. Verna is a warm, friendly woman who obviously loves children. Adam is a man who likes rules. I felt bad for Adam’s daughter, Amanda Rebecca (Adam insists on her being called by both names). I admired Verna for the knitting class she taught to Englischers at the community center. These are individuals ordered to take the class by a judge. Verna is going where God leads her. The class gives the participants a chance to talk as well as learn to knit. Blade, one of the Englishers attending the class, was a great character. She may look a little unusual on the outside (she is expressing herself), but she is a good role model for those who are lost. I thought An Amish Mother for His Child was well-written with developed characters. We get to see two people who do not know each other marry for convenience. You need to be brave to marry someone you do not know. It will take patience, perseverance, and prayer. I enjoyed going on the journey with Verna, Adam, and Amanda Rebecca. I found the story to be emotional and uplifting. I enjoyed the ending (I like a story that leaves me smiling). An Amish Mother for His Child is the fourth novel in the Amish Country Matches series. It can be read as a standalone for those new to the series. An Amish Mother for His Child is a sweet story with arranged nuptials, a strict list, a nickname predicament, a knitting class achievement, common interests, and God’s guidance.

You have to ask for what you need. Flat out. No one’s gonna guess, and if they try, they won’t guess right.
So very true but pride or fear sometimes gets in the way of things.
I think that in my opinion marriage is a job in itself. It takes two to make it work with God in the middle.
I felt sorry for Amanda Rebecca who seemed to be caught in the middle.
I really didn't like Adam much. I thought him a little selfish and a snob at times but.
Poor Verna. I loved her gumption step out of her comfort zone and fully embrace what God has led her to do.
I very much admire her for that.
I think the coolest character was Blade the English girl. She's a good role model for people who need help to find their way.
This was an interesting read because in a way I felt that this was sort of a mail order bride sort of thing.
I don't really like marriages of convenience because of certain reasons. I'd love to get to know the person better but that's why I loved Verna so much. She's a very brave person. I don't know if I could've done what she did.
5 stars for some excellent storytelling that kept me turning the pages.
It's a heartwarming story that could be an excellent Hallmark movie for sure

This story was so good! I really liked the premise that Verna and Adam entered into this arranged marriage, brought together by a matchmaker, for the good of Adam’s child, Amanda Rebecca. I appreciated that they both intended the marriage to one day be a full and complete union. However, they also built in some initial agreements to help them get to know each other better, such as separate rooms for a while.

The tension between Adam and Verna was so perfect. They walked a fine line as they worked to start their marriage off on the right foot. Adam was fearful of showing too much of his heart and being too emotional or vulnerable with his new wife due to the problems he’d had in his first marriage. Verna loved her stepdaughter but felt like she didn’t know how to make her husband happy. There were a few times where Adam reacted to something or said something in a way that caused Verna to feel hurt or chastised and I loved seeing Adam realize his mistake and try to fix things. I think what I really liked about these two characters was that they both actually had good hearts, wanted to make their marriage a good one, and loved Adam’s daughter.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

An Amish Mother for His Child
Patricia Johns. *****
Release Day, December 26, 2023

Such a wonderful encouraging, and uplifting story of human emotions, needs, wants, and desires.

Verna Kauffman Had been given everything she always wanted, marriage, daughter, husband and home, even if it was all done by arrangement.

We get to travel this journey with Verna, her husband, Adam Lantz, and his precious daughter, who liked to be called Mandy. These characters are well developed as we see them grow with the story.

The plot is simple. Love and desire for a happy home will find a way, or will it? Every Struggle, as well as every Triumph seems real.

Patricia Johns has such a way with words that the reader feels they are living the story right with these wonderful characters. Sometimes you feel like shaking them and saying, “can’t you see what is right in front of you?”

If you are a lover of Amish romance, this book is for you.

I am honored to be on the Launch team, and was given an ARC, but all views are my own, and I was not required to give a positive review.

Adam and Verna are wonderful characters in this book full of faith, love, and second chances. Patricia Johns has expertly woven together a story that is far more than your typical happily ever after. It is not only entertaining and easy to read, but also relatable on many levels. It explores themes such as God not answering your prayers the way you want Him to, choosing to love and communicate with your spouse through difficult times, and step parenting. And that when you give your challenging circumstances to God, He is able to pour out more blessings than you can hold or even expect.
Although this is book 4 in a series, I have not read the previous books and had no issues reading this one as a stand alone novel. If you are looking for clean Christian fiction that is unputdownable yet with important life lessons and realistic characters, look no further. I highly recommend this book and look forward to more from this talented author.

Not the usual Amish Romance!

I just finished reading "An Amish Mother for His Child", by Patricia Johns, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The story is different than the usual boy courts girl, they take a buggy ride, etc.

Verna and Adam are not kids...they come to their practical, arranged marriage with baggage.

But with patience, fairness and shared love of a little girl, they find a way to make it work...

But it isn't easy! Read this new book for a satisfying, low anxiety experience. Thanks for the hours of entertainment, Patricia!

This is a sweet story that involves second chances, hope, faith, dreams and family.

Verna, is an Amish young woman. Who teaches knitting to some young English teens who are in trouble. She longs for a husband and family. So, when Adam searches for a mother for his daughter a matchmaker brings them together. Knowing that is a marriage of convenience, Verna feels safe in her surroundings. But when an urgency arises that they must leave they place she grew up is when Verna's heart feels shattered to realize and accept that her marriage is not of love.

Adam, quiet but with so many hurts in his past makes relationships to his daughter and Verna now to flow. Restrictions, demands but with a heart for love. He realizes that his marriage is more than just a mother for his daughter. But will he let his past hurts show Verna that she is loved and cared for more than she has come to know.

This is a sweet characters that bring to life pains yet teaches how to flourish in love when you let your heart and God in.

This is a sweet story of people whom are matched by a matchmaker, and really don't know each other. There is a sweet little four year old girl that her father insists be called by her formal first and second names, but the child just wants to be known as Mandy.

Hard to imagine marrying someone I didn't know, but putting a child in the middle is even harder. We are with Adam and Verna as they journey this new life together, and deal with their own insecurities, and trying to put a prayerful Amish life together.

There are stumbling blocks he has to deal with along with a possible move, can this marriage survive promises? Will they be able to find a common road to happiness, the answers come, and it was a page turner for answers!

Now I'm looking forward to the next book in this series!

The newest book in the Amish Country Matches series is an excellent stand-alone story. It has to be a scary thing to marry a complete stranger. Verna Kauffman is a special woman. She has taken a big step in allowing a matchmaker to help her choose a husband. It is the best way for her to have her heart's desire. Her own family, with a child. An agreement has to be set for her to be comfortable. It was to be a practical marriage.
Adam Lantz has some no-nonsense rules about how he wants his daughter, Amanda Rebecca to be raised. He has a list. He sure has some work to do as he starts this marriage with certain set ideas in his mind.
I received an advanced reader's copy from the publisher through NetGalley. This is my unsolicited opinion. I love this book and the characters. It's an endearing story and I give it five stars. The advice Verna's father gives to her on marriage is a sweet message for anyone who reads the book.

Verna Kauffman has wanted to be a mother for a long time and when it hadn’t happened in the conventional Amish way of buggy rides, singings and courting she enters into an arranged marriage with Adam Lantz to become a mother to his daughter Amanda by way of a matchmaker.

Amanda is a sweet little girl, very smart and wants to be called Mandy like her friends call her.

A faith filled and encouraging story we see the author take a situation that has some drama in it and misunderstandings and turn it into a happy family union filled with love and respect.

I enjoyed seeing the character growth of all the main characters and seeing how their needs were met. Uplifting and encouraging, this is a delight that will be read again.

Book 4 of author Patricia John’s Amish Country Matches series, this can be read as a standalone however I recommend reading books 1-3 as they are worth it.

Verna and Adam both think they are getting what they want when they marry for convenience. But so often what we want is not what God has in mind, as in the case of this story.

Johns does a really good job of bringing along her main characters. We see them grow and develop as they deal with life’s challenges and its rewards. A sweet romance and the cutest little girl gives this story something for everyone. If you enjoy Amish fiction then I highly recommend An Amish Mother for His Child.

This story drew me in because it was such an unusual marriage. I actually thought well it looks like they are going to make a good go of it so that's the end of the story. I had hope as I could feel them getting closer as time went on and starting to really understand each other. Then life happened and the story got really interesting.

Disappointments, expectations, love for their daughter, support from friends and family, are all in this heartwarming story. It kept me interested in the outcome and turning the pages.

Such a good book!

I enjoyed this story and watching the characters overcome their challenges. Whether you’ve read other books in this endearing series or not, this book offers a satisfying reading experience for those who enjoy sweet love stories and marriage of convenience tropes. This novel focuses on Verna Kauffman, who agrees to marry a man she doesn’t know. This makes for a compelling drama you will want to race through to see how it plays out. Well done. This is the first book I’ve read by this author, but I plan to look for more of hers. I received a copy to review. All opinions are my own.

Reality check

Inspired story of an arranged marriage involving a beautiful girl. Verna, left on the shelf, marries for convenience. He is rather somber and although he has been previously married you would never know it. Strong characters make a believable story.

As always Ms Johns has written a thought provoking page turner of a book.
