The development of the romance – and of the story, if we’re being honest – is NON-EXISTENT.
Kayla gets used to everything happening around her far too easily, even when it’s absurd (like being trapped on a planet full of alien men who eat human flesh from time to time).
She barely spends any time with Grut – because he makes a point of staying away from her most of the time. He doesn’t want her, even knowing they are compatible and that she could give him what he’s always wanted: children.
Leiv, on the other hand, makes it clear that he wants a partner, but he’s respectful and gives her space. He was sincere and considerate – even if he has a more meticulous way about him.
And the protagonist is so confused that, even after deciding to be with Leiv, she gives everything up because Grut simply said “no” and practically forced her to have sex? Wtf?
And he basically only stayed with her because he felt he would lose a possession to Leiv. He doesn’t gradually change his plans as I expected because he grows captivated by Kayla.

So, they cohabitate for a week or so, in which they spend almost no time with each other or get to know each other at all. Then she decides to stay with him and they have mind blowing sex even though he’s never seen a woman before.
Also, the women of his species all disappeared into the same mountains and can never be found. Apparently all the women on the planet. They only come out to procreate. But these guys have access to space ships and they can’t find an entire civilization of women?!?
This book feels like it’s checking off checkboxes without thought to whether the plot makes sense. Why does Kayla like Grut? Why does Grut like Kayla? Why does Kayla want a mate at all? What is it about Grut that makes her choose him over Liev, who is much nicer to her than Grut is? How does Kayla go, in a matter of days, from being distrustful and desperate to get home to being content to stay in this village for the rest of her life? None of the answers to these questions can be found in this story.
This book was shorter than I expected. The world building was a bit basic, so not very memorable. Other than the initial abduction, there wasn't any conflict. Also the last minute name stop of "friends" we've never heard of was awkward. It was just a cameo of a couple from another of this authors books. What there was of a story interested me enough to read more by this author in the future.
The title is a misnomer! Grut was anything but cruel and Kayla was blessed to be rescued by him. I enjoyed the story, it was cute and the Horgerian culture is really wild. I admire Nova Edwin’s imagination and look forward to Liege’s story. It was also nice for Mira and her mate to show up. They had a cute story too.
Overall this was a cute short romance. It was lacking in several areas, such as needing steamier smut, more description of what the MMC looked like- Other than big and muscular we don't get much, and the entire romance felt like it came out of nowhere. but for 99 cents I gave it a try and I would read more by this author.
People are giving this some pretty poor ratings but for an Alien romance this is pretty good. It's short and a very fast paced read, and the romance is very little in regards to human connection. But it did a good job of giving readers a quick inside look of the alien culture and of course a decent sex scene. i have for sure read worse alien romance books but ive also read better.
Probably more like 2.59 stars because of editing and there isn't much depth to the story, however the it's so adorably cute after it's darker toned beginning. All the characters are delightful but Huzoga, Gut's dad takes the cake for me, he is special.
Very easy to read. A nice story. Loved the characters and the character progression was nice. Not my usual length, a but on the shorter side, but still good.
