This Colonial-themed craft book is split into five main sections with a sixth at the back that contains patterns needed for the crafts.
Letter Perfect - this was a great section to start off the craft book with. Felicity is often shown working on her penmanship in the main series and I found it fascinating to learn about how quills and ink were made back then.
Crafts Include: --Quill Pen (made with a real wing feather) --Berry Ink (using raspberries, strawberries, or blackberries) --Walnut Ink --Wax Seal
Fun and Games - here we learn about different activities that Felicity may have done to play either on her own or with her family. You learn how to both craft the games and how to play them. There's also a few interesting blurbs about how children entertained themselves back in the 1700s.
Activities Include: --Game of Graces (a hoop game that requires you to toss and catch the small hoop with wooden sticks) --Cup and Ball (a ball is attached via string to a cup, you need to toss the ball into the cup) --Kite
On the Plantation - this section both realistically tells us about what leisurely activities Felicity would've enjoyed on her grandfather's plantation AND explains that her fun summers would not have been possible if it were not for the slaves owned by her family. I appreciate the historical accuracy and honesty in this section.
--Folding Fan (made from colored paper tied together with ribbon) --Fancy Straw Hat (a regular straw hat with a ribbon added to it) --Fruit Pyramid (a decoration for your dinner table)
A Stitch in Time - in the main series, Felicity was always complaining about having to practice her stitchery. We learn why those skills were so highly valued in Felicity's time and various projects that girls like her would've made.
--Cross-Stitch Sampler (this is used to show off fine needlework, often containing the alphabet and numbers) --Sachet (a sweet smelling pouch) --Friendship Pincushion (a handmade pin cushion with embroidery on top)
Sweet Scents - we learn about why dried flowers and other sweet smelling items were important in Felicity's time. This section contains a few options for how colonists would preserve or use flowers or other nice-smelling items.
--Potpourri (flower petals and spices stored in a jar. Stuff this into the sachet from the previous section) --Tussie-Mussie (a small bouquet of pretty herbs) --Pomander Ball (a dried orange studded with cloves and other spices)
Note: The crafts that need patterns have them included in the back of the book.
Overall Thoughts:
I thought this was a fairly good set of crafts based on Felicity's experience. I did really like all the connections to real-life moments in history and all the bonus information given to explain why certain crafts and activities were included in this book!
