Sheila Ann Mary Coates Holland
aka Sheila Holland, Sheila Coates, Charlotte Lamb, Sheila Lancaster, Victoria Woolf, Laura Hardy

Sheila Ann Mary Coates was born on 1937 in Essex, England, just before the Second World War in the East End of London. As a child, she was moved from relative to relative to escape the bombings of World War II. Sheila attended the Ursuline Convent for Girls. On leaving school at 16, the convent-educated author worked for the Bank of England as a clerk. Sheila continued her education by taking advantage of the B of E's enormous library during her lunch breaks and after work. She later worked as a secretary for the BBC. While there, she met and married Richard Holland, a political reporter. A voracious reader of romance novels, she began writing at her husband's suggestion. She wrote her first book in three days with three children underfoot! In between raising her five children (including a set of twins), Charlotte wrote several more novels. She used both her married and maiden names, Sheila Holland and Sheila Coates, before her first novel as Charlotte Lamb, Follow a Stranger, was published by Mills & Boon in 1973. She also used the pennames: Sheila Lancaster, Victoria Wolf and Laura Hardy. Sheila was a true revolutionary in the field of romance writing. One of the first writers to explore the boundaries of sexual desire, her novels often reflected the forefront of the "sexual revolution" of the 1970s. Her books touched on then-taboo subjects such as child abuse and rape, and she created sexually confident - even dominant - heroines. She was also one of the first to create a modern romantic heroine: independent, imperfect, and perfectly capable of initiating a sexual or romantic relationship. A prolific author, Sheila penned more than 160 novels, most of them for Mills & Boon. Known for her swiftness as well as for her skill in writing, Sheila typically wrote a minimum of two thousand words per day, working from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. While she once finished a full-length novel in four days, she herself pegged her average speed at two weeks to complete a full novel. Since 1977, Sheila had been living on the Isle of Man as a tax exile with her husband and four of their five children: Michael Holland, Sarah Holland, Jane Holland, Charlotte Holland and David Holland. Sheila passed away on October 8, 2000 in her baronial-style home 'Crogga' on the Island. She is greatly missed by her many fans, and by the romance writing community.

He came sauntering over, lithe as a mountain cat in striped black and yellow cotton jeans with a sleeveless black vest top. He was forty if he was a day, but he dressed like a teenager; even his footwear was adolescent, striking black and yellow sports trainers on which he bounced lightly to curl up on the side of her desk, his knees bent upward and his arms clasping them, his chin tucked over them and his dark eyes gazing soulfully at Liza across the desk.

"You look cool and sexy as usual!"

"I wonder if your mother was frightened by Peter Pan before you were born?" Liza grinned as she spoke, but it wasn't entirely a joke.

Nicky liked the idea; his face gleamed.

"I may quote you."

I think Sasha Baron Cohen needs to pay royalties to the estate of Charlotte Lamb.

Charlotte Lamb shows a easy going journey for the heroine to find love after her painful past, but in a dramatic and sensual way.Liza Thurnston and Keir Gifford are a remarkable pair, and Keirs decision to win her heart was obvious,as it was obvious how deeply he fell for Liza.I understand Lizas coldness and distrust towards men after her horrible accident in youth.I admire her fight for survival and her career and her strong-willed nature.I liked her innocent friendship with the hero`s nephew Bruno, but the hot chemistry between her and the hero Keir i enjoyed EVERY moment of.

The passion in Keir was strong and his emotions were all too clear from the start. His jealousy was so strong and i like the way he tries to woo Liza.Their longing were too clear and the tension between them explodable. This is the earlier books i have read by Charlotte Lamb but it is very memorable.

Re Out of Control - This is CL stalker Alpha H lite. While the H is the usual "I will have you no matter what" kinda CL H that we all know and love, he is remarkably mild in his execution. There is very few roofie punishing kisses and while the H has a fairly smart mouth, he isn't really physically aggressive. This is more like a brainiac stalker H as he uses psychology and the fact that he can literally print his own money to stalk and win this h.

The story starts with the 25 yr old former model h, who now has her own agency, listening to her employees gossip about her supposed seekrit lurve life. The h has been casually seeing a young scion of a wealthy banking family and there are all sorts of rumors that things are really serious and he may propose. The gossip is a hot topic in the newspaper too and the h is sorta frantic to evade the nosy gossip writers.

The h is very enigmatic and remote, she doesn't give anything away and has a TRAGIC SEEKRIT PAST, but she likes just hanging out with the young man and has no serious intentions towards him and assumes he feels the same way about her. For some reason the young man seems to think he can impose himself on the h when ever he wants, (he is a bit spoiled,) and the h has a little cottage near the sea (she likes to dink about in little boats,) that she keeps as her very private weekend retreat, to which the young man invites himself to.

The young man's mum puts a kibosh on the visit when she calls him home to give an account of his presence with the h in the gossip pages to his uncle. The h goes to her cottage alone and it is really misty on her narrow lane. Right before she arrives, she runs into the back of a car that is parked in the lane with no lights on. The guy in the car gets out and is a bit angry. The h feels rather woozy, so he carries her into her cottage and he tells her he has a psychology degree and to the h he looks like a farmer.

The h doesn't want to call the police because she is afraid it will tip off the press to her private retreat, so she offers to pay the damages on the car. The man can't leave tho, the car is undriveable and the local pub has no rooms to spare because there is a big fishing competition going on.

The man cooks dinner for the two of them and the h reluctantly offers him a couch for the night, the h doesn't like being around this guy - he makes her feel very funny and she is hoping she can get rid of him in the morning. The next morning a local reporter shows up and he is quite nasty in his attempts to interview the h regarding her possible engagement. The H finally escapes and the h does too later on, she meets the casual guy at a polo game in London. The casual guy introduces her to his mother, and his mum seems to be fairly nice and impressed that the h has her own successful modeling agency but the h can tell that she doesn't really want her around her son.

Then she meets casual guy's uncle and it is the guy whose car she hit. The h is livid, she now knows he was messing with her and he only told her part of his name. Since casual guy always calls his uncle by his initials, the h did not make the connection and now she feels pretty ill used. The h goes home and the next day the H has his security guys waylay the h in the lobby of her office building. She is frightened and embarrassed and the H tells her he has sent his nephew to America for two years. (Basically the H is eliminating what he thinks is competition, cause he wants the h for himself.) The h tells him off and when he starts with the punishing kisses, the h punches him in the stomach and runs off.

Then the h gets a chance to get a huge cosmetic contract via one of her old photographers, she doesn't like the guy personally and he is always trying it on with her, but he does know his business and the h keeps it professional. Her casual guy shows up to say goodbye while she is fending off the photographer's roving hands and lips off and we find out that casual guy isn't in love with the h either, he just likes her as friend. The H shows up during the goodbyes and the h angrily tells him that if he wants casual guy to be more grown up, maybe he should quit treating him like a kid. She assures the H that she never had any designs on the guy, they just had a nice time together. Everybody finally leaves and the h can get on with her day.

She goes home that night and gets drunk on some spare champagne, the H shows up at her flat when casual guy called him to check on the h cause she sounded funny when he called her. The H invites her to his family estate and the h says no. The H tries it on again and offers the h a ton of money to sleep with him, the h is horrified that he thinks he can b buy her and she tells the H it will never happen.

When she was 17 she fell in love with a traveling salesman, when she got preggers from him, her father kicked her out of her home and disowned her. The h went to London to find her lover and found out he was married with kids. The h never saw him again and while she wandered around London in a stated of bewildered shock, she was hit by a car and lost the baby.

She changed her name and never went back to her parent's house or contacted them again. She became a very successful model and then opened her own agency and she has no use for men who think they can buy and use women however they want, no matter how much she is attracted to them. She kicks the H out after her story and when he calls the next day to invite her to lunch, she tells the H she will be permanently busy forever and clearly tells him she never wants anything to do with him again and he needs to stay out of her life.

The h returns to her office and gets the big cosmetic contract, she has a new unknown model she wants to use. When she meets all the principals on the new ad campaign her model will be doing, she finds out the H has bought the cosmetic company - seemingly on the spur of the moment, but we know it is to get close to the h, since he can't any other way. The H sets things up via blackmail so that the h and her model will be staying at his family estate- if the h doesn't go for the weekend, the cosmetic contract is off and everyone will lose.

The H picks her up to take her home on his private plane and he tries to convince the h that he is a nice person, but the h is still mad that he has investigators following her around in a substitute stalker fashion. The h realizes that the H is really serious about really wanting her and we all finally get to the H's grand estate.

The various modeling people show up and the h meets the H's mother who tries to psychoanalyze her. The H finally corners the h when they dance to a gramophone and swears that he loves her. He wants to marry her and he tells her no one knows the future, they just have to try. The h is still resistant, but then figures why not, she is wildly attracted and thinks she loves him back. The h hands the H a red rose for the big HEA.

This one is a lot of stalking interspersed with tedious bouts of secondary character boredom and descriptions of food. It isn't terrible, but the ending is really abrupt and the background characters got a bit irritating with no H and h romantic moment offset until the last paragraph of the book. There is a lot of fighting and frustrations abound, tho the H's stalker methods where pretty entertaining for HPlandia. This one is probably better read if you are a CL fangirl or really, really bored and can't find anything better.

No time for a proper review, but Boogenhagen covered all of the highlights of this model agency owner heroine and the millionaire hero who at first thinks she is golddigging his nephew. My biggest issue was the abrupt ending with the H/h agreeing that marriage is a risk they are willing to take while they dance in the daylight in the empty manor ballroom.

So many unanswered questions and dangling plot threads. Epilogue-lovers stay away.

'No,' she said, and balling her hand into a fist, hit him in the stomach before he had any idea what she meant to do. Keir instinctively doubled up at the blow, giving a winded gasp, and Liza pushed him violently before he could recover.

Muhahhaa.

"Out of Control" is the story of Liza and Keir.

Before the PC gang attacks me, let me say I do not condone physical violence. But when the H is acting like an utter dbag, I appreciate the h taking steps to ensure her safety.

Our h is a successful businesswoman, who runs her old modelling agency. She starts dating a young man, whose family disapproves of their relationship. On a stormy night, her car collides with a stranger, who she ends up sheltering. She soon realizes that he is none other than her date's uncle, the much censuring H. How she navigates the murky waters of relationship between herself, the H and the OM she does not wish to encourage forms the story. There is also an element of her traumatic past, which adds much flavor to their tale.

Strong h, smitten and confused H, loads of drama, and a nice ending.

This had so much potential, but the relationship between H/h needed further development, and the ending was too abrupt. I actually thought my book edition was corrupted.

We never really get to know the stalkerific H, other than he has tons of money, calls all the shots with the peons in his orbit, and has a very bad case of the "hots" for the heroine.

As romantic as the ending was (very Fred Astairish) I don't think he was asking for a forever after happy ending. I see these two going off for a sizzling romantic interlude but not much else.

Bummer, I was really enjoying this one.

This is the one where mrs Lamb realized when it was too late that the number of pages at her disposal were over.
It should have been 4 stars.
The heroine had a big trauma at 17 when she was seduced by a married man, left pregnant, thrown out of her house by her bigot parents and lost her child in an accident while wandering without an aim.
Then she became a famous model, she retired and opened an agency, a successful one, for modeling.
She’s off men but she has some friends.
Bruno, aka om, is one of those, a young rich boy of 20 and something who sometimes dates her.
His uncle - the hero-and his mum then thinks she’s interested in his big money and the hero tries real hard and I part them. He lets her see he’s interested in having her as his mistress even when she tells him she’s only a friend of his nephew and she’s not involved with him in any way.
The hero acts as an angry bull trying to keep them apart and that was the most entertaining part of the book.
Then one evening he goes to her place and she tells him the truth about herself.
He doesn’t let her go and he buys a company only to work near her.
He also asks her to his country house where he introduces her to his mum.
And here’s where she should have understood that he was serious about her.
But she keeps running.
Eventually the hero declares his love and tells her that nobody knows the future but they can try to make their relationship work.
As an ending, it sucks.
It’s the worst ending ever.
Many things are left unresolved.
His mother wanted to talk to her but she never manages.
The heroine doesn’t really know -and it’s not explained- what she wants to do with her life.
Does she want a family?
Children?
What about her job?
Is she even persuaded? Does she even love him??
And a proper proposal is never done.
All this could have been solved differently.
For example in the first part there could have been less useless parts where she’s with om, or with other models, and more could have been written about her interactions with the hero.
I understand the limits of these kind of books but this needed editing.
As it stands it is just like something unfinished and very unsatisfactory (sorry for the sexual hint…)

This one i enjoyed it,the hero G. K. Gifford thinks Liza is a gold digger who is set to trap his 23 years old nephew,he investigates her out and till the reports are out he meets Liza as Kier Zachary, both are attracted to each other and Liza starts to fall for him but then Liza goes to meet the nephews uncle were she gets the shocker of her life Kier is there and then she comes to understand the lies he told

Kier is all cool calm and composed he accepts to met her purposely and on diferent names but he never told any lies, his full name is George Kier Zachary Gifford and then he tells her he will never let a gold digger marry his nephew and he wants her and he will not let her go

Liza is angry and hurt again, she has a past which has hurted her very badly and changed her life completely, she is more angry at herself for letting her guards down and she starts avoiding Kier but he does'nt leaves her alone

Kier sents his nephew to NewYork and he says to Liza he wants and affair which Liza totally refuses and even tells him the reason,Kier backs out but does'nt leaves then he manages to became her client and takes to his home where she meets his mother they like each other

Kier then tells her he had brought her cause he loves her but Liza is still reluctant and Kier tells her to trust him and he will never ever hurt her and Liza takes a leap and they both get their HEA

Liked Kier cause whatever he did was to protect his family, liked Liza also she is a strong woman after going through so much she starts her business and becomes financially independent and stands on her feet never looks back, though there were times when Kier acts very badly but compared to other CL books i have read Kier is a much better hero and i adored him

Overall a good read

Bob Tanner is my absolute favourite fictional journalist ever.

"...his clothes were shabby and disreputable. One look and she had a strong suspicion that he was a tramp; he needed a shave, he smelt of drink and it wouldn't have hurt him to have a wash, either."

Bob is supposed to be covering a local fishing contest for the local Argus, which is apparently of such vast national interest that there's "no room at the inn" in the local pub due to it being crowded out by other media. So Bob decides to do a bit of moonlighting, he's also a stringer for Fleet Street as most local newspaper reporters are, and he fancies digging up a bit of sex and scandal.

Bob's target is Liza Thurston, a former model who now runs a modelling agency, and has such a perma-frosted foo-foo after some dreary heartbreak in her teens that she hasn't had sex for eight years. Despite this, and despite her quiet and exceptionally boring and implausibly respectable personal and professional existence, the newspapers are fascinated with her love life, and "the London papers would pay well for a news item about her".

Liza has been hanging out with a bloke called Bruno, who is so screamingly, obviously gay (is it scientifically possible to be called Bruno and not be gay?) that he may as well be wearing a big flashing badge emblazoned with "Friend of Dorothy" and a rainbow jockstrap. But this is still the 1980s when no one is gay, so Bruno is described as a "playboy" despite his 100% lack of sexual interest in women.

For some reason Bruno's family vastly disapproves of Liza, and Bruno's asshole Uncle George/G K Gifford/Keir Zachary (I'm not making this titular trainwreck up, I swear) stalks Liza and has her investigated and spied upon. He never apologises for this. He justifies it with the claim that "these days, we're all on file... somewhere there is always a computer record of your every movement."

G K Chesterton is doubtless on the board of Facebook by now, but at the time of the novel he's some kind of business magnate, and implausibly attractive, and an arctic explorer who can cook a gourmet meal by mixing a can of spaghetti hoops with a can of beans, and a star polo player despite being twice the age of all the other polo players (I was getting shades of a Rupert Campbell-Black/Sean Bean in When Saturday Comes hybrid here).

Why would the family of a feckless, idle (and gay) young man object to him dating a successful, respectable, quiet-living businesswoman who clearly doesn't need his money and might even inspire him to develop some kind of work ethic? Your guess is as good as mine, but Liza Frosty-Fanny is apparently far too infra dig for Fabulous Bruno.

But let's get back to Bob, the true hero of our story. Bob rocks up drunk at Liza's cottage. He's "short and heavy" and manages to get a foot in the door, before having a crack at Frosty-Fanny himself.
"Just give me a few quotes, and I'll go, I promise, Liza! And I don't blame Bruno, by the way - you're a real knock-out, aren't you? I go for blondes myself, always have."

Sadly, Liza isn't taken by poor old Bob's "grinning, unshaven face", and the next minute he's been physically thrown out of the door by G K Chesterton.

Liza's worried they've killed him, but she should know that Gentlemen of the Press are rather more tough than that. First thing next morning, Bob's back outside the cottage, staking it out with a photographer friend. The snapper misses his chance to get a shot of G K Chesterton (we're in that strange Romance Novel parallel world where two single adults spending the night in a cottage is a Huge Scandal - things haven't apparently moved on since the days of Wilkie Collins) so he and Bob "pound up the path and start yelling and knocking".

But Bob hasn't given up. Later in the day, when Liza is off her guard, he's back with his photographer, who actually manages to operate his camera this time, although Liza is "an experienced hand with cameras and managed not to be full face every time he snapped." Given she's utterly incapable of managing a "no comment" whenever the phone rings, I find this implausible.

Poor Bob then gets pelted with tomatoes, one of which hits his forehead and bursts. (Note to younger readers: supermarket tomatoes were actually edible in the 1980s, you could bite into them without breaking your teeth. Today you'd need to open a can of tomatoes to achieve the same effect). And right after this indignity, Bob gets stabbed in the foot with a spiked umbrella.

But don't despair! For Bob, like any newspaper reporter worth his salt, still managed to file the previous night and make the morning papers, with a great bit of copy about a "mystery man" staying at Liza's cottage. Good for Bob. Back in the day, that would have probably been worth a couple of hundred quid. And these were the days when a couple of hundred quid could actually buy something.

After this, page 60, the book should really end, because there's no more Bob. You can read on if you like, but with Bob's exit, the glory really has gone out of it.

This was an ok read. The H didn't come across as a manho, just a bit domineering and autocratic. Oops. I just used two synonyms in one sentence. Ah well. The h was a likable and admirable character, having built up her own business and becoming successful in her own right. Oops. I just used the phrase "her own" twice in one sentence. I'm blaming it on the bathroom cleaner fumes. LOL.

I liked that there wasn't any OP drama. This was safe and slightly ridiculous. A solid three star read.

I liked it. It managed to pull me out of my reading slump. I liked both the MCs, they were mature and acted their age ( rare ik). The mmc was definitely a little crazy at the beginning and that kept my attention long enough for me to care about their pairing. The heroine was not afraid to stand up for herself and was very cultured. I always love CL's writing style, it's so smooth and sophisticated. I never feel like I am reading an amateur.

I feel like there was a missed opportunity for angst and heartbreak- there was some but not enough. I didn't feel any sort of suspense towards what was going to happen. This means I won't be rereading this anytime soon.

Would recommend for ppl that love Charlotte Lamb. But if you're looking for smth very intense and angsty- probably not for you.

3 1/2 Stars! ~ After a disastrous first love, Liza promised herself that she'd never allow herself to lose control again. She channeled all her energy into her modeling career and then into her agency, and now everyone in the business knows she's a force to be reckoned with. Keir has a hard time sorting out just who Liza is and her mystery has him enthralled. Ms. Lamb is a master at creating chemistry and sexual tension. These two steam up the pages.

There is something I liked about this one. For a Charlotte Lamb novel, the hero is surprisingly gentle and patient. I really liked the ending -- a sweet and romantic declaration from the hero. It would have been a lot better with a little more physical romance, but this is an older one so it's not that surprising that it was lacking. Overall, a decent read given the age of it.

Is that it ?
TF Charlotte lamb!
The final chapter should have been chapter 4 max, as it is when you feel they are starting to warm up to each other. Where the hell did that ending come from!

Worst ending ever, it was so abrupt, made no sense and did not promise of a happily ever after, did not promise anything to be honest, it was just weird and sloppy like many parts of the story.

lets start with the title : Out of control. Well she is definitely not out of control, as a matter of fact she has everything under control, her career, her personal life, her friendships, her emotions. But it seems that CL remembered at the end that she should do something to support this title so we get “out of control “ repeated for no reason at all in the final pages.

She was out of control; she had been for a long time now, even while she tried to pretend it wouldn't happen, couldn't happen.
then repeated after 5 lines
And she thought with wild helplessness: out of control, I'm out of control
then the final line Why had she ever been afraid of losing control?
And please keep in mind that she was perfectly under control the whole time before and during this conversation. She did not even say “ I love you” to the hero.

Another stupid thing was when the h was telling us he story about the married man that deceived her. So she says that she found out that he was married when she called the company where he worked to get his address and found out that he married. Then a page later she tells us the she went to London looking for him and that is when she found out he was married and walked for hours in the street and got his by a car.
Also, we did not even get a glimpse of who the hero really is. Just bits and pieces here and there. We could have done without Pam -Pam’s story, less description of whatever place she was in, less interaction with characters the do not serve the story at all and had more time with the h and H.
The ending gave us nothing .
-the hero was not a man whore, he had a limited number of relationships before that he thought were going somewhere then they ended. Did he love those women? -we do not know ,he might which put the h is the same position as those women. CL tried to wrap this mess up by telling us that ALL those women did not care for him, they either wanted his money or had a lover hidden somewhere. 🙄
-He works 12 hours a day - plays polo - spends weekends with his mama and sister. Loves what he does and does not seem to want to slow down. So where is the h in this?
-She does not know what she wants? No idea if she wants to stay in the business, or if she wants to slow down or if she even wants to marry him .
-He does not propose nor does he imply that he wants to marry her, It is “I love you” lets give this a try. You know the sort of thing that you usually start a story with.

Love this one but the ending was too abrupt. h is causally dating a young man and the uncle H attempts to break them up. Our H is an outdoorsy polo playing business man. h is 25yr old former model who now owns an agency. h has some trauma. As a teen, h was tragically seduced and knocked up by a married traveling salesman. She was kicked out of her house and hit by a car that terminated the pregnancy. H goes to visit h’s weekend getaway cottage bc to prevent her relationship with his nephew. While driving up in poor weather conditions, h hits H’s car. H stays at her house for the night but gives her a name he doesn’t normally go by. H tells h she’s beautiful, she declines his advances. Later h attends a polo match with the nephew (which the H is playing in) and then his real identity is revealed. H sends his nephew to America to work. H continues to involve himself with h, including getting a business contract with her modeling agency. Eventually he maneuvers things so h has to visit his family home on the assumption of business, where he gets her alone, dances with her, and proposes.

This could have been really good, but it ended abruptly. I mean there was this build up and then poof...nothing.

It was like getting halfway through Gone With the Wind, only to have Scarlet suddenly decide Tara was just another farm, Ashley was a book snob and Rhett Butler was kind of cute even if he slept with whores.

Good but should have lasted another 20 pages or so as HEA was rushed. Best part was when she punched him and pushed him after he had her dragged to his office for no good reason.
Not sure what happened to all the gold digger insinuations either. Book was an enjoyable read but the ending was simply shoved on without much buildup.
