Artists will discover an exciting, mixed-media way of painting that takes full advantage of the vivid moods of watercolor, the punch and contrast of ink, and the rich textures of colored pencil. Sueellen Ross teaches readers to layer one medium on top of another in easy-to-control stages. Step-by-step instructions teach how to use this technique to paint cozy interiors, beautiful flowers, cats, birds, and other delightful subjects in a brillant, realistic style.
This book does a great job of breaking down the artist's approach to realism using watercolor, ink, and colored pencil. I learned a lot of techniques that I'll be trying out in my own work, and I'm considering buying it so I can reference it more then I can with a library book.
One note: this book focuses primarily on plants, interiors, and animals. It doesn't feature any portraits or humans. Personally that doesn't bother me since most of my subjects are animals, but this might be a deal breaker for some people.
What a fantastic book. I love Sueellen Ross' unique approach to art, from which I learnt a ton. I love mixing media, too, I think it is modern. Sueellen Ross takes colour by number to a sophisticated height. Ultra cool. . . And the plus is that I have also learnt how to do reduction lino prints from this artist! The books on printmaking I've read were not this thorough. (Nor was my printmaking teacher, hahaha).
