This book teaches readers what volunteering is, why it is important, and how they can volunteer to help animals both in their community and in the world at large.
3.5 stars--Young animal lovers will enjoy this colorful, easy-to-read book about the well-being of animals both wild and domestic. Youngsters are given simple tips on how to help animals, from taking responsible care of their pets to collecting money for habitat conservation.
Helping Animals goes above and beyond most "doggie and kitty care" books, I'm happy to report, by informing children that their families can help animals by making sure they don't purchase clothing made with real animal fur. This is done in an age-appropriate and non-upsetting way. Unfortunately, dietary issues are not mentioned--however, this is difficult to do with an age group that has little say about what goes on their plates.
While I do wish the book's author would have relied less on generic stock photos as illustrations, overall, Helping Animals will find a place in both school and public libraries.
Helping Animals (Heinemann First Library: I Can Make a Difference) by Victoria Parker
While many animal lovers might think the only way they can help animals is by adopting an animal companion, this book offers several other suggestions such as volunteering at an animal shelter, taking care of animal habitats, and even avoiding clothing that is made from fur. The book also contains lots of tips for taking care animals if you decide to adopt them. There are lots of photographs of appealing animals and smiling children enjoying time with them.
