Teamed with an exorcist, Lauren must grapple with her faith as she investigates the mysterious death of a nun in an ancient cloister in Italy. Is something greater at work? Or is a killer stalking?

Hmm. I don’t know. This book was just OK for me. Nothing wrong with it, just nothing amazing either. There was one chapter that revolved around an exorcism… that chapter was a 5 star chapter. I’m pretty sure I was sweating and anxious. But I wish more of the book could’ve evoked that type of feeling. (Does that make me sadistic?…. ANYWAY.)
It just fell a little flat for me. I did enjoy the relationship and growth between the 2 MCs. But I will most likely not be reading book 2 of this series.
I'll start by saying I liked the plot, and my expectations were high in a second. However, a couple of things threw me off: 1- in the beginning of the book, Lauren/Giulia had a sister, who suddenly never existed 2- there were some editing errors in my kindle version - I risk saying the original thought surname for Giulia Lambi was Rossi, because on many occasions the word "crossed" was showing as "cLambed" (yes, with the capital L). 3- the story about the real killer just didn't add up to me (or maybe I was already disappointed with the entire thing) 4- I felt like some background stories were not as well developed as they could be, like why the killer went after her husband, what happened to that criminal, with her FBI career...
I don't know; maybe those will be explored in the other books, but I honestly wouldn't pay for the second one to find out.
Book #1 in the Lauren Lamb series should NOT be missed. This is my first book by Kate Bold. I happened upon it on a stuff your Kindle day. Now I have a new series and several other books to add to my TBR. If you are looking for a supernatural thriller with an exorcist vibe, a true crime investigator and former FBI agent and a woman hero who is working through her own past – this is your next read.
I received this book for free on a “Stuff Your Kindle” day. The story kept me interested, but I had definitely received a version of the book that wasn’t edited well. The word cLambed showed up numerous times, which really took away from the story for me. I was also very confused with the interchanging names Guilia/Lauren. I may give this author another chance, but I sure hope I don’t ever read a book so unedited again.
Intriguing story revolves around Catholic nun murders, a burnt out FBI agent, and a capable priest. Well narrated and clean (LGBA references). Like the lead character- a string and suffering female.
Something Knocking is the first book that I have read written by Kate Bond. I found the story fast moving and the characters engaging.
Lauren Lamb is woman whose previous career choices have left her alone and aimless. A former nun who lost her faith in God when her mother died, she left the church behind and joined the FBI. As a special agent her life is further turned upside down in a short stretch of time.
She is attacked and almost killed by a vicious murderer she is pursuing. While she is confined in the hospital recovering from her wounds, she is dealt the double blow of the deaths of her father and fiancé. Her father, a widower of 10 years dies quickly after the return of previously diagnosed cancer. She is unable to see him prior to his passing. Shortly after, her fiancé is murdered by the same evil killer who put her in the hospital.
The story actually begins as Lauren attends the finance's funeral. Broken, she resigns from the FBI and moves to her father's home in Tuscany in an attempt to escape her suffering. There she meets a local elderly parish priest, Father Emilio, who is also an exorcist. The two of them magically bond and form a team to investigate and solve the mysterious deaths of a series of nuns.
This is an entertaining and compelling book which touches on many emotions.
It was ok, but the author or the proof reader, if she has one, aught to know how a cardinal is addressed. No priest would be caught addressing a cardinal, your Excellency, especially in Rome, of all places. You address a cardinal as your Eminence and not your Excellency. Big difference. I was really surprised that the author didn't ask a priest to review her book. There is also in the book about a possession and a lay person, unless helping in the exorcism, would have to be free of sin and go to confession before they enter with the priest. Plus the priest must always follow the rite of exorcism. Otherwise, the story of a women who has lost her faith because of so many tragedies in her life is a good one. You sympathize with her but it is mentioned throughout the book. It was boring after a couple of times but I loved the ending. With all these minor issues, I recommend the book and others that follow. Enjoy.
It was more like a 4 1/2, but it was better than many 4 stars 🌟 , so I bumped it up. I also bumped it up because for Kate Bold, this is one of the best books I've read so far.
I was captivated from start to finish.
In short: An angry FBI agent attempting to run and hide from her past & present pain leaves the US only to stumble upon a priest and get herself entangled in an unthinkable situation.
No, it's not the start of a barroom joke. It's the premise of one hell of a story. It doesn't matter what religious belief you have or don't have, that is not what the story is about. (You'd most likely not be reading a murder/thriller if you were too righteous.) It is the relationship between these two characters who are both hiding a past that team up together in an unlikely pairing to work on solving the unknown deaths of local nuns.
This was solid. I loved their relationship. The conflicts were real. Good book.
Lauren has lost everyone that she has ever loved. She knows that her time at the FBI is up she can't live with the grief. She moves to Italy to stay at her parents house. But there are too many ghosts there. So when she is asked to help a priest to find a killer she isn't too sure as she has lost her faith. Will she be able to find it again? Someone is killing nuns and they need to find out if is human or spirit related. Emilio knows that Lauren has been through so much but he knows that she is the right partner for him. But can they find out the truth before another nun is killed? A great interesting read
Interesting story, and I loved Father Emilio's character. There was one major problem, though:
The first couple of times I read "cLambed" I thought: oh, it must be "calmed" misspelled. However, the 4th or 5th time that understanding was so out of place that I went through Goodreads reviews trying to figure out how other people were reading it.
I read a couple reviews that I think are spot-on: the main character's surname appeared to originally be 'Ross'i, and was "replace all"-ed to 'Lamb'i. This is really a huge editing oversight when the book is steeped in Catholicism, where people are regularly crossing (or cLambing🤦🏼♀️) themselves.
This is the first book in Kate Bold’s Lauren Lamb series. Lauren Lamb is a former FBI agent who was injured on the job by a serial killer who uses a sledgehammer to kill and maim his victims. One victim was Lauren’s husband and while Lauren was in hospital her father died alone in hospital in Italy.Lauren flies to Italy and is pulled into an investigation by a Vatican exorcist. Former nun Lauren resists initial attempts to involve her because she’s lost her faith. The book is a real page turner with numerous suspects and red herrings. I look forward to the rest of the series.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Quick, easy read. But somehow I don’t think the nuns “cLambed” themselves. All I can figure out is the main character’s name started as Ross & they decided to change it to Lamb. And they must have used the find & replace all, bc I don’t know any other way that every time it should be crossed, it’s cLambed.
Also, why is it an FBI thriller when then character only works for the fbi for the first few pages?
Italian Suspense Combining Detective Work and Exorcism
A very worthwhile and intriguing mystery novel set in Tuscan Italy. An ex-FBI agent flees to Italy as an escape from traumatic events in the US. She goes to the home of her deceased parents in hopes of living there. Somewhat unwillingly pulled back into investigative work by a fatherly parish priest who is also an exorcist, the duo search for a killer who may be either a human or demon. They make an unusual and compelling pair, advancing a plot containing twists and turns that will appeal to readers who appreciate mystery and suspense.
I recieved a free copy in exchange for an honest review. I will start with the positives. The book does have a lot of action. Im just not sure i like the setting of being in a catholic church. although a thriller i dont like any books i feel like are trying to convert me. so thats why i can give it a 5 star rating. a matter of personal taste
I went to Catholic elementary and an all boys Catholic high school. Really like the deep dive into Catholicism and exorcism. Not sure Ms Bold realizes that on the Kindle editions the word Ross was substituted for Lamb in words like across (acLamb). But the action and suspense overrides the annoying editorial matter so I still give it a 5 star.
I loved the fast-paced mystery, authentic characters, and beautiful Italy. I have never read this author and was surprised and happy that it kept me on my toes, the lot was intriguing. I Loved the relationship between Guilia and Father Emilio. The outcome was not what I expected, which is why I am moving on to the second book.
Lauren Lamb has resigned from the FBI. Her last case cost her dearly both physically and mentally. She goes back to her father's homeland - Italy. Though she doesn't know why, she teams up with a priest to find the killer of nuns. Is it human or a evil spirit? I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
The author needed an editor for this one. I highlighted a specific word that was wrong throughout the entire book -- they had obviously searched and replaced but had pasted the wrong thing, so the word came up as this combo non-word every single time. I just don't even care enough to go back and look at what it was. Sigh.
I appreciate the effort and hardcore research done by the author in order to fabricate this creepy mystery, but I am confused who Lauren Lamb is. My print copy says her name is Julie/Guilia. No Lauren Lamb anywhere. The foul language was unnecessary and much too frequent for my taste. A great plot and great characters, but the confusing name typo, and the language threw me off.
I really liked the characters in this book. I like how they were total strangers but as the story went on they become friends. I enjoyed how he was so calm with her but as time goes on you can see a camaraderie forming between them. I can’t wait to read the next book.
Fast moving, intriguing, plot. Loved the mystery of trying to figure out who the killer was. Even more than that, the main character figures out how to move forward aft we all the loss in her life.
Thank you Kate Bold for an excellent story with fascinating characters. Both Lauren Lamb and Father Emilio are great friends of mine now and I am looking forward to spending more time with them.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Fast paced, strong characters, and a surprise. I will read the second book in this series. I think the plot will thicken with the new neighbor also.
A book I could NOT put down until the last page. Priests, Nuns and an FBI agent come together in a spell binding murder mystery. Honestly with a cast such as these one would think boring but it was anything but. Highly recommended.
This whole book felt a little flat. I can’t tell you exactly what’s missing, but by the end of the book I was left unsatisfied. I did enjoy both the main characters, but the rest of the plot was really dry.
I’m torn between 2 and 3 stars. I did the audiobook and was not a fan of the narrator at all. I’m certain if I would have read this one with my eyeballs I would have enjoyed it more. I enjoyed the concept and the relationship made throughout the books journey but just couldn’t fully get into it
This book was good. However, I read it through audiobooks and whenever the book had an *** it was vocalized “Asterix asterix asterix”. It was very jarring. The book itself was good but the process through which I read it had its issues.
This story was well written. The characters came across as real, and the climax was appropriately surprising. The epilogue was gratifying. Would enjoy more by this author.
Lauren retires from the FBI after a tragic loss, but when she moves to Italy she's asked to help investigate a series of deaths in the local convents and teams up with a local priest to find the truth behind the nun's murders.
