Lake Snagging the hunter was the easy part. Now I have to prove to him that a life filled with chaos, the most amazing fish ever, and delightful me is so much better than normal—trust me, he isn’t too hard to convince. But when a group of insolent chimeras laughably think they can target my one true love, they have another thing coming for them—likely death. With my dubious sidekicks in tow—and Declan, who is as happy as I am to run headfirst into danger—we travel across the country to track down why these chimeras are harassing Declan. But what we find might prove yet again that you never know who the real monster is.
Alice Winters started writing stories as soon as she was old enough to turn her ideas into written words. She loves writing a variety of things from romance and comedy to action. She also enjoys reading, horseback riding, and spending time with her pets.
✅ Funny banter (slightly OTT MC) ✅ Romance (MM) ✅ Found family ✅ Monsters and hunters ✅ Pace and action ✅ 2 POVs ✅ Plot ✅(🆗) Smut (not a lot of smut) ✅(🆗) Worldbuilding (there is more backstory, but we are still missing some information)
Michael Ferraiuolo did an amazing job, once again. 😍
Hunter’s Descent happens a few months after the end of Monstrous Intent. Declan and Lake are living together, and trying to have a “normal” life, but they are forced to get involved in monster politics again as hunters and chimeras around them are being attacked and killed by a mysterious group. It becomes personal when Declan seems to be targetted too, and it might have something to do with his past as a hunter.
One complaint I had about the first book was the lack of backstory, and while we get more information on Declan’s past as a hunter, there was still room for more I think. The same goes for the chimera, I do find them very interesting, especially how some of them can mingle with humans or have a third form, but we still don’t know much about how they came to be.
Sy and Indigo decided to remain close by and seeing them slowly bonding with Declan and reacquainting themselves with Lake was heartwarming. With Mittens and Sir Reginald, they created this weird but cute family and I would love some novellas about them because I need more of this crazy family.
Speaking of Sy and Indigo, am I the only one who felt some tension/attraction between those two? I would be all in for a spin-off or a novella about them finally doing something about that because there was a clear tension between them, but they also clearly care for each other. I suspect Sy might have a crush on Indigo, that would explain why he acted like he hated him, but kept on going to see him every day… **There is a free short story (Monstrous Beginnings) on Alice Winters’ website about how Sy and Indigo met, but it should be read after Hunters Descent.
This series is as engaging and entertaining as Alice Winters’ other series. The characters are intense and over the top at times, and you never know what to expect from them, but that’s one of the reasons why I love Winters’ work so much. It’s always light and funny, and it makes me smile and even laugh out loud every time.
I am surprised that this is the first reread I have done of this one! I enjoyed this as much as the first listen and read, and I hope there is another book coming out soon, cause it definitely felt like there was more these guys could get up to!
Original Read/Listen: July 2023 Audio: 5 stars Book: 4-4.5 stars
Michael Ferraiuolo + Alice Winters = Pure Greatness
Loving this series. And so hope there are more books in this series in the future! Because Lake, Declan, Sy, Indigo, mittens, and fish stick are too good not to have a third book haha
I do wish there was something more to this book, idk what, maybe more serious conversations but even with that said I was hooked from page one.
I was hooked immediately. This was so much fun! 😁💜
In this story, Declan and Lake, along with their friends Sy and Indigo, get drawn into the mystery surrounding a strange symbol found on the dead bodies of seemingly unrelated chimeras and humans. While the mystery doesn't have anything to do with them directly, whatever is going on keeps interfering with their day to day lives to the point that they feel like they don't have a choice but to investigate.
What they discover is horrific. Had this been a different type of story with a different author, the bones are there for a heartbreaking angst filled story that would rip your heart out. Because this isn't that kind of story, the author does a great job keeping things light, only mentioning the more horrendous things done to chimeras in passing and making sure Indigo, Lake, and Sy kept any scene from becoming too dark with their nonstop banter.
I'm not sure if there will be a book 3, but the story ended in a way that would allow for it. After the ho-hum start of this series, I wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. I mean, I knew I wasn't going to hate it, but to actually find it as exciting as I did? Totally unexpected. 4.5 stars
Book 1: Monstrous Intent - 3 stars Book 2: Hunter's Descent - 4.5 stars
Still don't know how chimeras came to be...great world building. Where I'm even concerned about a first level chimera and his older brother...a beta fish.
Can't knock found families. They come in all shapes, sizes and species.
Please let there be more...cause I didn't think the hunting for sport would become a big topic. Humans are very concerning. How one can justify so many trespasses.
I felt like this instalment dragged a bit and nothing much was added to the overall story. I still laughed, and the narration was great, but I didn't like it as much as the first book.
Michael Ferraiuolo did a great job, as usual. Nearly made me cry!
Hunter's Descent is set a few months after the events of book 1, with Declan and Lake living together peacefully until attacks start happening on hunters and chimeras. Because they are morally grey, they don't really care at first, (I love Declan's attitude) until the attacks are aimed their way. Even then they have to decide if they want to get involved - spoiler, they do, because they are bored.
Some of the usual humor, I really missed Lake and his fish, along with his family of chimeras. He's one of those chaotic characters that can't help but charm me.
As with the first book there is a lot of violence. Hunter's Descent really hit the mark for me, it kept me turning the pages. I cannot wait for it in audiobook.
Gah I loved this so much. Phenomenal audio yet again!
This is pretty typical Alice with one serious MC and one OTT MC - but I am such a sucker for that dynamic. I think that what makes it work so well is that Alice truly understands how to write those characters in a way that feels unique and always hilarious!
Lake and Declan were such sweeties in this one!! Ooh how they love each other so much! All the love and affection!! The side characters were great and added to the plot and character development!
The intrigue, mystery, suspense and action were all wonderful!! Such a fun book!! I highly recommend!!
I adored this book and devoured it! Alice Winters books have the kind of books that are a mix of humour, often over the top, and serious situations. Her books aren't fluff but they are comfort books, at least for me. I find comfort in how irritatingly funny the characters are and how the romance grows slowly and it feels like the most normal thing ever. It becomes part of the story and you won't even remember how their lives were before they were together. Lake and Declan, chimera and human, sunshine and grump. A match made in hell. Yeah, definitely not heaven. They're hilariously perfect for each other no matter how much Declan fought against his growing feelings. I loved seeing Declan being vulnerable in this book, not knowing about his feelings because they were so new to him they were throwing him off balance. Lake doesn't have these reservations: he loves Declan, he tells hik, everyone, shows it, screams it, annoys everyone about it, even Declan who very deeply not so secretly loves all of Lake's weirdness and shenanigans. Sir Reginald included. Who wouldn't love Lake? Honestly, he is impossible not to love!
Like with book 1, this book is also action packed and full of fights and also mysteries. They couldn't catch a break and I loved every second of it, yes even when I was worried for their wellbeing!
In book 1 Lake and Declan had Emma, Declan's coworker, as a sort of adventure companion. In this book we have Sy and Indigo, both hilarious in their own way, excellent addition to the story.
Long story short, I loved Hunter's Descent and I loved how no matter how much Lake and Declan want a "normal" life, problems just seem to not want to leave them alone. They deserve a proper vacation asap!
Once again we delve into the chaos and mayhem that is Lake and Declan’s life. Lake is his usual sassy, goofy, lethal self whilst Declan still embraces deadpan humour and is also still learning how to process and express his emotions. Circumstances have them working on a DRD related matter and all the monsters come out to play, chimera and human, with Declan appearing to be the main target. Of course Lake and Declan are accompanied by Sir Reginald on this latest adventure along with Indigo and Sy. The found family manage to win the battle once again but not without some action on the way and Lake threatening to use his torture techniques involving scissors. I did find myself laughing out loud at not only Lake but all of the fun witty banter between the characters.
There’s also an ‘attack’ desk, bacon donuts, a fish booster seat and some unplanned DIY in this wonderfully engaging story. I would definitely recommend reading the first book in the series prior to jumping into this instalment.
Lake and Declan are back. Trying to live a normal life (Declan is thinking of reapplying for a teaching position), the two are caught up in up in DRD business. With their found family of humans and chimeras, Lake and Declan investigate who is killing hunters. And why they've targeted Declan. There's the usual Winters' snark. And ridiculous situations. But there's a darker thread running through the story. Declan is afraid to open his heart fully to Lake. And Lake thinks he's too much a monster for Declan to ever love the real him. Meanwhile, everyone else realizes the two are weirdly perfect for each other. Winters does what she does the best. She makes us care for these somewhat emotionally stunted, morally gray characters. Looks like the DRD problems the pair unearth will have to be resolved in the next book. Or two. Hopefully it will be soon. Quick, fun. A little bloody. A little disturbing. Pure Alice Winters' magic.
If I didn’t love Declan and Lake so much, I’d be suspicious that they secretly plan all their shenanigans. I mean I love trouble but these two are whole other universe. Like I said though, I do love them and will merrily follow, be dragged, swim, or ride along on any adventures with them, and their eclectic found family.
“Dear god, Declan, do you have enough arms to even use all of those?” “I was in a panic thinking you were going to run off. I just grabbed sh*t!” “Clearly! You don’t even need any weapons. I’ll protect you with my floof side.”
Yes, the floof is strong in this one and I gotta say I adore the banter between Lake, Declan, Sy and Indigo. Even Fish Stick, who I think may really be the mastermind behind it all. Ridiculously fun, weirdly sweet, and utterly unforgettable, mischief and monsters lovably await you, as do Lake and Declan, though they may be apt to sneak attack you, in this comically addictive series.
Hunter’s Descent is the second book in Alice Winter’s Mischief and Monsters series. It follows Lake and Declan after the events of Monstrous Intent, and you are going to want to read these books in order for maximum understanding and enjoyment. I enjoyed the reveal here as the truth about what is going on slowly starts to unfold. As the men learn about who is behind the murders, the situation is pretty horrifying. I don’t want to reveal too many details, but there is nice combination of suspense, intensity, and mystery here to keep things exciting. The early parts of the book are more focused on uncovering what is going on, then we move into a new location where even more is revealed and the guys face some big danger. Declan and Lake take the lead here, but they are joined by Sy and Indigo, two former members of Lake’s group with Mona.
While there were some things that I thought were too much, it was an entertaining read. Declan and Luke are back with another adventure when trouble comes to find them. I loved the interactions with Sy and Indigo. And there were moments that had me on edge. Also I hope we get to know more about a particular chimera in the next book. Yes, I'm assuming there will be more with this group.
Another incredible book by Alice Winters! The one shares more about Lake and Declan and their crazy adventures! From a fish that does nothing to their found family, you can't help but love all the crazy characters in this book. It has all the love, adventure, humor and steaminess that we have come to expect in all of Alice's books and is another rom-com homerun!!!
I love Declan & Lake in the first book, and I just fell more in love with them here. They have such amazing banter and make me laugh my head off.
This book is set two months later, and they just can't seem to have a quiet life. Hunters and Chimaera are being killed, and Declan's past comes back to bite him in the bum.
The chaos that unsue is as crazy and morally grey as usual, and I just can't get enough of it. They don't need to get involved, but you know they can't keep away, especially if someone is after Declan; Lake will do anything to protect him. I'm glad they got involved because it's more fun that way. The end was epic, and it really ended with a bang!
This one really kept me glued because I had to see how everything ended. I also was here for more Sir Reginald and the amazing cast of side characters.
Hunter's Descent is another book fill with mayhem, crazy antics, more hunters and chimeras! I love Declan and Lake, their relationship was crazy but they are good together. After a serie of attacks were hunter are getting kill these two know that they have to do something to help even if this will make them targets too. I love the banter all of them have, it was hilarious and they were a lot of action scenes. Declan is amazing with Lake even when he doesn’t approve he end up doing or taking care of Lake. It was awesome, I have a great time reading this book!!!
Alice Winters is just sooo good at snark, sass and fluff. Declan and Lake are back solving an even bigger mystery. I hope Indigo and Sy get their own books too. A solid 4.
This is another amazing book by Alice Winters. I absolutely loved this. I love Declan and Lake and I loved that Indigo and Sy were around more. Sir Reginald is still the best pet in the world.
I was cracking up like a crazy woman. Lake, Sy and Indigo were a crazy bunch but they made me laugh. I enjoyed their humour, bantering and the chaos that followed them.
Things wouldn't be complete without Sir Reginald and don’t even get me started on the yucky bacon donuts.
Fantastic book and I enjoyed every second of it.
*I voluntarily read this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else's*
This time Declan and Lake are joined by other chimeras, Indigo and Sy. Obviously Sir Reginald is still there and is travelling with the team as well. I love all the snarky talk and the interactions between the team. In this book, Declan's past comes back to haunt him in the shape of Grady. Enjoyable read and hopefully there will be another in the series.
I'll be honest, my brain is a bit fuzzy on the details for a good reason (other than my terrible memory.) So I loved the first book, enjoyed the humor and the banter all while the plot was well tied together in a nice bow. This one I was more perplexed, and it might just have been my mind at the time, but the comedy felt a bit more cringy this time. It took me so long to finish it because I would take a break after a cringy moment, come back and die internally again, stop, come back, and repeat. And this cycle went for a bit. I noticed that this happened outside of the plot points. The plot hooked me good when it came to the actual action and like what pulls them in the chaos once again. But outside of that I had more trouble getting through it this time. And this sometimes happens where once the couple gets together the dynamic is different and sometimes it is not as satisfactory, and it felt like this is one of those cases. Maybe it could have been written better, maybe it's simply just me. Outside of those cringy moments, I did enjoy the book. As a whole it was very back and forth. I still definitely recommend it if you enjoyed the first book, because when it comes to humor or cringe it ultimately depends on the person.
3.5 Stars. I stopped reading at approximately page 96 twice before picking it up again to finally finish reading the book. While the world building was pretty good, some of the humor seemed a bit ridiculous at times. I did end up enjoying the story once I pushed through and kept reading. I liked both MCs even though one was a crazy alien. :-) But somehow kept losing interest in the story.
With books I rate a five, it’s hard to know what to say because I’m so absorbed by the book that while I’m reading, I don’t take any notes. I’ll do my best to review it though.
It’s very funny as you’d expect from Alice Winters. The characters are all nuts, not just one of the MCs. This book has a lot of similarities with the Hitman’s Guide series. Here Lake is as weird and crazy as Leland from that book. But only the other MC, Declan, not their friends, thinks anything he does is crazy and then not that often. I like Declan’s reactions to Lake when the latter does something particularly weird in an annoying way a little better than I like the straight man MC in Hitman’s, Jackson (gay man? Like what I did there? Okay, I’m not as funny as Winters… you probably didn’t even get the joke…), in the Hitman books.
Indigo and Sy are also nuts and they all react to each other and butt up against one another’s behavior in such a way that made me continually laugh out loud. And the scenes with the fish? I was almost crying they were so funny. I also adored the antics of Mittens to no end. I just wish I knew what she looked like.
The hilarity didn’t stop the action, danger, and near death that I love, which happened in much of this book. The huge action scene was so full of that stuff that I didn’t even notice that no one really came near death, no hospital scene, until I write this but with nearly invincible Chimeras and the best hunter around on the side of good, what would you expect? However, there was one place a Chimera was brought down way too easily in order to create more humorous moments, but I’ll say it’s artistic license.
I was glad that we finally see that there was at least one female hunter at some point. But she was “sweet” not something like kick-ass and is dead because the job’s dangerous and was mentioned in one sentence. I want female hunters! I want female agents! I want a story about two men in love and their crazy friends which include at least one woman not adversaries. Is that too much to ask?
The only problem I had with the book other than that was that Winters expected us to remember characters and events from the first book with almost no background information. But I read the previous one recently so I did okay.
The next one isn’t out yet (there better be a next one) so I’m going to cry in my iced tea until one is published.
DNF at 36% I read the first one and liked it. Gave it 4/5 stars. But by the second book I just couldn’t keep reading. I love books with humor, but i couldn’t handle the amount of humor in this one. Which sounds weird, but it was like nothing at all was taken seriously. Lake was cute with the silly things he said for a while, but at a certain point it was just irritating and I wondered more than a few times why Declan even liked him. I wish I could have stuck with it but I found myself unfocused and unable to even make sense of it. It would have been a great book if there was a better balance of humor and seriousness.
