Star Dimmer

Rate this book
Jen Conrad never wanted to be a tabloid sensation at age 17. But that's unavoidable when she has been wrongfully accused of murder. Plus, Jen's mom is a TV star struggling with her own issues. The press loves this kind of gossip. Hoping to protect herself and her family, Jen hides out at her grandmother's beach house. Soon, she realizes this is more dangerous than she ever expected. This series of books was designed specifically for struggling teen readers. The contemporary fiction is written at accessible levels and provides substantive content without being edgy. The relatable plots appeal to teens, especially those who are reluctant to read. Books in the series quickly grab their interest with fast-paced storylines that feature realistic, sometimes larger-than-life teen characters readers can identify with or would like to know. Then there is an unexpected twist. The characters' lives are suddenly on the edge of fame, fear, or even sanity. What starts out as fun or routine becomes a nightmare, real or imagined. As characters are tested in mind, body, and spirit, readers have a sense of being there to experience the adventure.

Rating this as a hi-lo, from the perspective of a librarian. This could be a good read for a teen who enjoys thrillers and/or murder mysteries. It had a rough start, shifting between current time and flashbacks, but the flow improved around pages 15-19. Overall, it was a quick read with a supernatural twist at the end!
