Wash Day

Rate this book
"Wash Day tells of a girl's recollection of her childhood in the South during the Depression. Every wash day, while Miss Ett boils the laundry in a big pot over a fire, Grandpa keeps the children entertained. He tells stories from his army days, and they march around the yard while he plays music on his trumpet. And each time he plays "Amazing Grace" Miss Ett wipes her eyes with the corner of her apron. When hard times come, Grandpa's gift of music keeps these two families connected. Culminating in a small but powerful act of generosity, "Wash Day is a moving, intergenerational story about how friendship and caring bridge the barriers of race and age. A 2005 IRA Children's Book Award "Notable" in the Primary/Fiction category.
