When will Nikki be able to put the past behind her?
The deep, hollow chimes of the grandfather clock startled Nikki. Six o'clock. Now she'd barely be ready when Chad came to pick her up.
Do I even want to go out tonight?
Yes, because the only thing I can do is get out of here and keep busy-so I can forget all about my messed up life - even if only for a little while-
This way Grandpa can't harp on me all evening. Neither can Jeff - he's always been a really great friend, but lately - well, I just can't figure him out. What is it with everyone these days? Why can't they all leave me alone?!
And then there's my mom - now that I know her secret, my entire life seems to be built on a mystery.
Overwhelmed by anger and confusion. Nikki determines to shut out the pain by hardening herself against the people who care most about her. But when her friendship with Chad turns suddenly sour, Nikki faces yet another critical decision. Can she learn to forgive everyone who has let her down - including herself?
This book was a lot like the first one. I gave it four stars because I didn't find it as interesting as the first but still I connected to it. So over all it was pretty good and would recommend it to young adult readers.
I love these books !!! When I was in high school I couldn't stop reading them they were so good. And when I graduate from high school I couldn't find them in any store. So my dad had to order them online for me
Now that she has had her baby Nikki has to come to terms with her decision to put him up for adoption and also has to overcome the perception of the teen mother.
Whyyy do books of this genre so often have Perfect Christian Male evangelizing Main Character Girl that they have a crush on? Other than that, this book was more interesting than the first.
Nikki’s pain and anger made this hard to read but those feelings were realistic considering how little time had passed since she delivered and surrendered her son before this story began. I guess we’re given some explanation to her mother’s behavior in the letter but the explanation doesn’t match the intensity of the behavior (in this reader’s opinion). Maybe there’s more to the story to come out as the series goes on?
Though these are short and somewhat issue driven stories, I am enjoying rereading these books. Nikki is a realistic and relatable (and likeable) character and I’m curious what happens to her next and how her healing journey is treated as time goes on in her universe. I hate when you’re reading a series and something huge and life altering happens in one book, and then is barely mentioned again, though only a short amount of time has passed in the fictional universe. We’ll see how the author handles Nikki’s pregnancy and adoption in the remaining books.
Edited to add: reading as a new mother, I am attuned to anything about baby care or baby behavior that doesn’t seem realistic and how dated this was made me cringe! Talk about a one month old baby sleeping in a crib with bumpers and covered with blankets, and feeding said baby a bottle of apple juice instead of formula :-X
