This is from my own personal collection. It's been sitting on a shelf for years with the other RPGs that I rarely play (check out my other listings). Never has the Gothic in the Gothic Punk of the World of Darkness been emphasized as much as it in the fourth installment of potential roleplaying games offered in this world. The one which allows the reader to play a ghost or run a roleplaying games where the main characters are ghosts in this unique setting. From the illustrations to the quotes, this book evokes the haunted, classical and modern, giving it a touch of the surreal. We’ve even got a couple of my favorite writers from the 19th century doing the introduction, for in this world, they are wraiths themselves. The world itself is powerful, absorbing, terrifying, depicted in the pages in heart pounding, surreal dystopia where the horrors of the past echo and ricochet across the spirit world. Every character is lost and hunted, potential currency for a host of insubstantial predators. The worst aspects of the Roman Empire awaits in sinister grandeur, ready to weigh them down with chains. What’s gone, what’s decayed finds a new existence in this world ready to be swallowed by oblivion.
Wraith isn’t a game for everyone. It’s a dark journey, yet power and passion has been poured into it, making it a rich and absorbing experience. This book contains the tools to create a remarkable chronicle with deep characters if in the hands of the right Storyteller and roleplaying troupe. As it is, it’s fires up the imagination with the shadowlands it evokes, bringing back bits of myth and legend. For all of these qualities, I give this book four stars.
Perhaps the only one of the original-wave World of Darkness games to do something both mechanically innovative and genuinely artistically interesting with the format, though hampered by a somewhat muddled presentation of its setting. Full review: https://refereeingandreflection.wordp...
