In this book, Krallis deftly weaves together the story of Michael Attaleiates History with the broader narrative of Imperial Decline during the later 11th Century. He makes a convincing argument about the uses of history during this period, not merely as a way to remember the past, but as a political tool used by the ruling regime and specific actors within that regime to advance a narrative.
Haven't read it in a while, but a very good, and insightful take on why people write histories, and I felt like it needed at least one review.
