Incredible book, especially the first half. In what is considered the first Western autobiography, Augustine shows uncommon vulnerability and honesty throughout which I found moving and relatable. The second half of the book contained some challenging sections that I found myself needing to trudge through but overall this is a wonderful work and an interesting look at 4th century Christianity.
I also really enjoyed this particular translation (Sheed) compared to the one I read nearly 10 years ago.
I found a friend in Augustine. My favorite part is when he asks himself, “How did God wait forever to create the world? Wait, what is time? Does time actually exist??” Great to know I’m not alone in overthinking everything. 😂
Really good, profound stuff in here. I slowly read the book over the course of seven months, taking the time to absorb and reread certain parts, underlining many ideas that I will need to return to sometime. It helped that it was pleasure reading and not class reading—I didn’t have an essay due, so I didn’t pressure myself to understand every sentence, and instead just enjoyed it. Honestly it’s a great way to slow down and unwind before bed.
