"Every generation has a voice, and one day I'm sure that a panel of pop-culture experts will choose one for my generation. But it will be too late for me, because I've already found one. He is the father of the words you are about to inhale." - Timothy McIlrath, Rise Against
In the same fashion Do-It-Yourself punk bands have built their fan base for the past 30 years, Chicago author Christopher Gutiérrez has carved his own niche into the literary world relying on that same aesthetic. In the span of three short years, Gutiérrez has gone from sporadic zine publisher and part-time blogger to full-time writer and public speaker, self-releasing 3 books, a spoken word CD, a live DVD, several mini-books and fanzines all under the umbrella of The Deadxstop Publishing Company.
A Life Deliberate is truely about someone who lives with sincerity and passion. It shows you just some of Christopher's highs and lows, rangeing from childhood stories to some that only a year (maybe less) old. He lives this way to prove to everyone it can be done, and to make us question ourselves as to why we aren't at least trying to emulate his ways. Because in the end, I think all that anyone wants is a deliberate life.
From this book I learned that I will never be through challenging myself and living and growing and loving.
A few favorites from the book: We Are The Unbreakable The Last of the Great Misanthropes The Streets of Pamplona Make Your Mark My First Hero
As insane as it is to believe, this is my first HeyChris book. I loved it just as much as I knew I would. There's something about the way that Chris writes that transcends a typical autobiography into something more, something impossible to give a name to. There are stories that made me laugh, stories that absolutely disgusted me, and stories that inspired me. Because that's the type of person Chris is. His words bring out raw emotions in you that you never knew you had. They make you want to get up and do something with your life, do something you're proud of. His words are an inspiration and I can't wait to read more.
I love this book it is now out of print but there is an exerpt up on his website deadxstop.com Buy his stuff. support independent authors/artists.
I was listening to his little podcast (the deep end) which is explicit as are some of his stories and he said that "My First Hero" was his favorite story he'd ever written so I had to get it out and reread.
Dude is awesome.
It's just a book with little true life stories. the tagline to this book is "tales of an unbreakable boy". And that is what it is.
The author is very candid and I appreciate that. He certainly has had a disturbing life at times. Good for him for rising above it all. Good quick read, entertaining if nothing else.
Have met Chris. Talented writer. Interesting person. However, his writing was not much on display in this book, perhaps due to his young age and immaturity when he wrote this book.
