Iceland is known as "the land of fire and ice." This is because the island has around 200 volcanoes and about a tenth of its area is covered with glaciers. The colors of the national flag represent these defining land features. Explore the pages of this book to learn about the Icelandic people, culture, and landscape.

Iceland is an interesting and exotic place. It is an island with many fjords and its capital is Reykjavik. It has glaciers. The humpback whale is common along the coast. White-tailed eagles and the swift gyrfalcon patrol its skies. There is a lot of geothermal activity there.
The Icelandic flag is a red cross with a white border on a dark blue background. Iceland gained its independence in 1944 from Denmark.

Exploring Countries series; 32 pages. Great basic information and photos. Good resource for reports or recreational reading. So far, this book of the series is one of the prettiest and most intersting.
It made me want to travel to Iceland. Bravo! Highly recommended for Grades 4-5.
