Underwater, a large, lively community of unique animals thrives. Many of these animals belong to the fish class. There are colorful clownfish, lurking sharks, and silly sea horses. There are fish named after lions, tigers, elephants, and other wild animals. Swim your way through basic information about fish in this introductory title.
Fish The book begins by telling the audience that fish are part of the vertebrate animal kingdom since they have backbones. Then the book talks about the environment of fish. They can swim in freshwater, saltwater, or both. The book talks about their body parts and the three different groups of fish; jawless fish, fish whose skeletons are made of cartilage, and fish whose skeletons are made of bone. I can pair this book with The Pout Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen. This is a book about a fish who is gloomy all throughout the book until he discovers he isn't a pout pout fish, but instead a kiss kiss fish! I can connect the two by talking about how similar the environments are in both of the books.
Just right for an emerging reader who is looking for the chance to learn some beginning facts. This does just enough without overcomplicating the matter. The photography is very clear and engaging and the book does an admirable job of explaining some basic matters of biological classification, which a teacher will appreciate though a student might not see as terribly important yet. Good elementary library book.
