If you can only own one set of books for your children this is the set. I'd recommend beginning by reading these books to your children and I assure you that your child or children will never want to see this set of anthologies leave your home. I'd start with the shortest stories and build. These are treasured in our home because of not only the stories within but the hours and hours we have spent together reading and discussing these stories. All of these stories offer incredible opportunities to discuss so many subjects such as wise vs unwise choices, charity and greed, selfishness vs selflessness, cruelty and kindness, fantasy vs reality, fact vs fiction to name a few. Although they are old (1958)I am sure these sets are easily found online. My children did not care for "readers" such as Nooks when they were younger. I bought them, loaded scads of old and new books and watched them sit. The only thing my children enjoyed on the Nooks were the family photos I had included. My girls prefer the "feel" of a book. Somehow holding a book simply is easier to fall in love with it- at least in our family. These books will lead your children to be incredible readers. The stories are great. They contain well known stories and not so well known stories. Vol. Two will help Your child understand the phrases "Open sesame," "She was a Cinderella," "Don't kill the goose that laid the golden egg," "his man Friday" and more.
